Unlocked: A Jail Experiment (2024)
Punishment or rehabilitation? That is the question
Watching this series brought out some glaring truths to me: both punishment and rehabilitation are what prison needs to be.
The hardest part of watching was seeing some of the men trying their best to become better men but not having the mental health support that they so desperately need. I'm sure the prison provides what it can, but without real change in the real world where mental health support should be available to everyone, then this will be an endless cycle. And the people holding the purse strings in Arkansas aren't willing to make changes at the prison for the better. This facility is only a county jail- yet it is being used to house inmates who are serving life sentences and have zero f's to give. Mixing a first time prisoner in with repeat offenders and those who will love their entire lives in jail is less than ideal.
As an Arkansan, I see firsthand how wide the disparities are between those who have and those who do not. Generational poverty, violence, drug abuse and more are running rampant everywhere. And do not fool yourself that everyone is getting an equal education.
If this look into a prison brought out any empathy, then please urge your lawmakers to support this sheriff and his staff as they try to balance punishment and rehabilitation in a novel way.
Maestro (2023)
Marvelous acting
Formidable performances by Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan, but the depth of the characters cannot make up for the lack of altitude in the story itself. I believe they tried to tell a wide, expressive story; but even with a little over two hours of run time, it felt empty in many places. It either focused on too much or too little. It should have been a story about the Bernatein's love, a story about their unusual lifestyle or a story about Bernstein as a composer and conductor. There was so much material to work with and the film tried to get all of those aspects included instead of having a clear focus.
Persuasion (2022)
Jane Austen would love this adaptation!
As a lifelong Austen fan I feel confident saying that as a female author ahead of her time, Jane Austen would love this version of Persuasion! It is witty charming with great performances by most of the actors.
Breaking the 4th wall in the movie lends itself to the writing style of Austen in Persuasion using the narrator to speak for the main character, Anne Elliot.
Modernizing the film version of the novel by using slang such as "he's a 10" is exactly what makes me think Ms Austen would be thrilled with this film version made in 2022.
Dakota Johnson's subtle glances and winks to the cameras capture the character's essence perfectly.
Scenes from a Marriage: In the Middle of the Night, in a Dark House, Somewhere in the World (2021)
It's a compelling ending...
As in I'm compelled to hate both the characters. Superb acting by Jessica and Oscar.
Scenes from a Marriage: Poli (2021)
This is actually visceral
I have never wanted to see both more and less of a show. It's horrifyingly painful and relatable and draining. I cannot look away.
Tell Me Your Secrets (2021)
Disjointed. Plot holes.
A complete waste of time watching. Watched because I'm a fan of Lily Rabe. Seriously mad I spent time waiting for this series to get better.
The Heyday of the Insensitive Bastards (2015)
Interesting stories, interesting concept
Each story isn't exactly what you're expecting in the nicest way.
The Veil (2017)
Too terrible for words
As in, not enough synonyms for the word terrible to begin to capture this movie.
Stargate Origins (2018)
How this averages 4 stars is mind boggling
It really is as bad as the other reviews warn. I can't believe this merited the Stargate license.
Seriously, it IS that bad.
