The Weight of Chains (2010)
Finally a balanced view to present to us Western Audiences
I've been fascinated by the break up of Yugoslavia since I was a child, watching the tragedy on the BBC, and have extensively travelled across all of the republics over the last 20 years. No one has been able to explain why Yugoslavia 'had' to break up and most had a longing for the old country, particularly in Bosnia. This documentary explains the history, as well as the events leading up to the break up, of Yugoslavia. It delivers a well balanced view of events that do not assign an overwhelming blame towards one specific ethnicity. It explores vested interests of outside countries and organisations. A lot of those vested interests have repeated the same tactics across the world over the last few centuries, using similar tactics to that perfected by the British Empire. The documentary gives all those answers to all those questions that Western news and documentaries left you thinking 'OK.... But why?'. Ultimately you can see why a once relatively affluent country like Yugoslavia is now fractured into several very much less affluent republics. A must watch.
Dara iz Jasenovca (2020)
Incredible portrayal of the barbarity of man
A little known chapter of European history here in the UK. The actors are superb, as is the filming.
The film portrays the barbarity of people when their prejudices are encouraged by the authorities. It tackles horrific themes in a dignified manner. This film should give the victims a voice as Schindler's List gave voices to the victims of Auschwitz and the Krakow ghetto.
Micky Flanagan's Christmas (2018)
An amusing dissection of Christmas
An amusing dissection of Christmas, featuring what Micky finds good and bad about the celebration. Nice bit of light hearted fun in the lead up to Christmas.
Dial M for Middlesbrough (2019)
Alright for a bit of non-taxing fun
Funny enough to pass 90 minutes without taxing your brain. Not as funny as the Death on the Tyne episode.
Go Home Polish (2020)
An analysis of what home means
A very interesting view of the meaning of home and what it is like to be an immigrant. Great analysis of the feelings, both positive and negative, towards both places and the people who live there.
Afghanistan: The Unknown Country (2011)
Incredible tour of the regions of Afghanistan
An incredible tour of Afghanistan. Taking in the culture, sights and history, as well as the current troubles and aspirations of the people. Wonderful footage and presentation.
