Mario Van Peebles has been tapped to direct “That’ll Be the Day,” the story of how Buddy Holly and other musicians of the late 1950s helped give birth to rock ‘n’ roll and influence the wider societal and cultural landscape, including the civil rights movement.
Music has been central to much of Van Peebles’ work, from his 1991 gangster movie “New Jack City” to his work on “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which he co-executive produced for Hulu. Van Peebles is currently writing a musical stage tribute to his father Melvin Van Peebles, to be performed at New York City’s Lincoln Center later this year.
“America’s tumultuous cultural melting pot has produced transcendent musical talent, including Buddy Holly, who was our first bad ass rock ’n’ roll nerd,” Van Peebles said in a statement.

Mario Van Peebles made a big mark on cinema following in his father’s footsteps, Melvin Van Peebles, to be a unique, prominent voice for the African-American community in cinema. He would make many appearances as an actor, including working with fellow gunslinger Clint Eastwood on Heartbreak Ridge, as the sword-wielding Kane in Highlander: The Final Dimension, and taking on the monumental task of portraying Malcolm X in the Michael Mann film, Ali. However, in 1991, New Jack City, which co-stars Ice-t, would put Van Peebles on the map as a director, and he would parlay his run with movies like Panther and the 1993 western film, Posse, in which he also starred.

Reach for the sky cause Mario Van Peebles has returned to the old West! In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse, which he had written, directed, and starred in. Now, Peebles has gotten back into the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The trailer has now been released courtesy of Quiver Distribution and features Mario Van Peebles acting alongside his son, Mandela, who also plays his son in the movie. This keeps the tradition of the Van Peebles filmmaking lineage rolling along as Mario was also heavily involved with his father, Melvin Van Peebles’ film career. Mario would even make a biopic where he portrayed his own father with the film Baadasssss!, which is a play on the title of Melvin’s famous movie Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

Many actors have several key roles in their careers, but Erika Alexander is one of the rare ones who’s had the role of a lifetime. Thirty years ago, she stepped into the character of Maxine Shaw on Living Single — a now-iconic attorney character inspired by her role models Cicely Tyson, Phylicia Rashad, Whoopi Goldberg and Hillary Clinton. In the years since, she’s been part of significant projects like Get Out and Wu-Tang: An American Saga. But American Fiction, she says, is the crown jewel of her portfolio.
“It’s been very healing to be in this movie,” says Alexander, 54. She plays Coraline, a divorcée who begins a relationship with Jeffrey Wright’s Monk, a novelist so frustrated with the publishing industry’s penchant for stereotypically “Black” books, he submits an absurdist manuscript to prove a point. “We’ve been having conversations like those in the movie for a long time,...

Erika Alexander got her start as a teen on “The Cosby Show” before assuming the breakout role of attorney Maxine Shaw on “Living Single.” But it’s her latest performance in “American Fiction,” a satire that critiques our culture’s obsession with stereotypes, that’s put her in a conversation she’s never been in before — that of awards season contender.
Alexander plays Coraline, the love interest of Jeffrey Wright’s Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a cantankerous author who challenges the industry’s perceptions of “Black entertainment.” On Dec. 5, just hours before sitting down with Variety, Alexander learned she’d been nominated in the supporting category at the Independent Spirit Awards; she attended last year’s ceremony as a guest.
“I got dropped off on the highway and walked, scooting around the Porta-Potties,” she says, laughing brightly to keep her emotions about the moment at bay. They seep in anyway.

In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse. Peebles took after his father, Melvin Van Peebles, who was a notable filmmaker in the blaxploitation genre in the 1970s. Mario appeared as an actor in films like Rappin’, Heartbreak Ridge starring Clint Eastwood, and the infamous Jaws: The Revenge, which featured an apathetic Michael Caine. He would also head up his own projects as a writer and director, much like his father. One of the more popular films Peebles would be known for is the 90s street crime classic, New Jack City.
Peebles is returning to the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The film is a Western that bears no connection to the similarly titled Posse. Highland Film Group has picked up the distribution and has shared a first look at the film with a new picture exclusively shared by Variety.

RZA is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Wu-Tang Clan’s legendary debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) with a run of symphony shows at the Gramercy Theatre in New York City this November.
Set for November 7th, 8th, and 9th to coincide with the release of 36 Chambers on November 9th, 1993, the shows come after the multi-hyphenate helmed a production called “36 Chambers of Shaolin and A Ballet Through Mud” featuring an orchestra and ballet in Denver earlier this year. It’s unclear if — or how — these 30th anniversary shows will differ from that production, but RZA’s social media announcement described them as “a live orchestra experience.”

Actor Devix Szell was no stranger to film sets when he stepped onto the lot of a major upcoming film in the fall of 2022. As with most large-scale productions, Szell wasn’t too surprised when he was told by production members they wanted to take some scans of him in costume.
However, when he entered the trailer, he recalls being surrounded by dozens upon dozens of cameras, shooting him from every angle and direction. Although Szell says he had been scanned before for another production, this was different.

As TV academy voters fill out their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots, they will have to consider 163 shows for Best Drama Series. This is only down by eight compared to last year. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members can now not let their selections exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which will be eight in this case.

We now know the name of Rihanna’s first-born child. Per TMZ, the singer named her son with A$AP Rocky: RZA Athelston Mayers.

Since then, she’s performed at the Oscars and stepped out at the Met Gala, where she always stunts as one of the fashion fundraiser’s best dressed. Adrian Miller is full of stories. Throughout our hourlong conversation in Rolling Stone’s midtown office, almost every name mentioned evokes a colorful anecdote of his experience with them. The ‘90s are reductively branded by rap’s so-called East Coast-West Coast beef; It would make casual followers think hip-hop was siloed into bi-coastal industries. But there were people around like the LA-based Miller, an industry veteran who was around for the early chapters of both Wu-Tang and Death Row Records as a radio host and A&r at Loud Records,...

Bobby “RZA” Diggs, the producer and leader of the legendary hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan, hopes he’s created a guidebook for people who grew up the way he did.
Speaking about Season 3 of Hulu’s “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” the fictionalized account of the group’s origin that he created with Alex Tse, he says, “This show is a map for young men trying to navigate themselves through life. Whether they’re in music, sports or nine-to-fives. I just hope that when young men, and young women, watch it, they take these examples to heart.”
Though “Wu-Tang” began in the midst of a clash between rival gangs, the series’ third and final season sees Bobby (played by Ashton Sanders), ever the perfectionist, spending every waking hour in the studio as the architect behind the group and each member’s solo careers — though issues with drugs, girls and the rappers...

"Wu-Tang: An America Saga" may be bidding fans farewell after an impressive three-season run, each full of exciting hip-hop misadventures, but the story isn't ending without one last mind-blowing lap. The hit biopic drama, which made its splashy debut back in 2019, kicked off its third and final season on Hulu on Feb. 15, jumping to Wu-Tang Clan's wild success years after the big basement flood that almost ruined their solo albums. As the crew try to ride out their five-year plan - orchestrated by leader Bobby, aka RZA (Ashton Sanders) - the downsides of money, power, and fame test their will to stick together.
Fans of "Wu-Tang: An America Saga" are certainly sad to see the imaginative, truth-inspired hip-hop series come to an end, but the cast - which includes Sanders, Shameik Moore (Sha Raider/Raekwon), Siddiq Saunderson (Dennis Coles/Ghostface Killah), Tj Atoms (Ol' Dirty Bastard), Dave East (Method Man...

To bring it to a close, season three's plot focuses on the group's success years as they course through their strategic five-year plan, which isn't without its share of threats, obstacles, and challenges.

One of the pleasures of a TV festival is bringing people who love television — and work in it — together in one place. After two years of holding a virtual event due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Atlanta-based festival is back in person to connect students and fans with talent from both above- and below the line. The 2023 festival will take place Feb. 9-11.
“We are so excited to be back on the ground in Atlanta for this year’s Scad TVfest, offering our students and patrons the opportunity to engage with some of the most creative and successful people in the television industry through screenings, master classes, panels and more. We are proud to premiere some amazing new TV shows and, of course, shows shot in Georgia,” says Christina Routhier, executive director.
Scad president and founder Paula Wallace adds, “This year, Buffy, Darryl, and Jamie Dutton star in the greatest show about television: Scad TVfest!

Another month means another streaming service overhaul: prepare for another round of disappearing movies and TV shows, just when you were finally gearing up to watch them. But on the bright side, that also means a bunch of new titles coming in to fill that void. As always, Hulu has plenty of titles — both old and new — to make sure it remains one of the dozen subscription services we all keep paying for.
Among the incoming titles are three different series set to close things out with their finale seasons: Hulu's widely acclaimed "Wu-Tang: An American Saga," the FX crime drama "Snowfall" and the recently canceled ABC drama, "A Million Little Pieces." The streamer is also daring to give Netflix a run for its money when it comes to the world of true crime docuseries. Film hasn’t often been kind to young Black mothers like Gia in “Earth Mama.” Too often, women who are struggling to do the best they can by their children are blamed for their own circumstances. The presumption is they have squandered their opportunities to live and do better, but the problem, as “Earth Mama” illustrates, is too often they haven’t been given shoes, let alone bootstraps.
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Gia (played by Tia Nomore) is a young mother whose two children have been taken by the state. That means she gets to see them only an hour a week during supervised visits. On top of that, she is weeks from delivering another child. February can be a weird month. It’s too late to wish anyone “Happy New Year,” late enough to abandon resolutions, and too early to leave the house if you want to avoid getting caught in nasty weather (even in Los Angeles).
This month also marks the third and final season of Hulu’s widely acclaimed “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which charts the rise of the Wu-Tang clan over time. Season 3 catches up with the Wu-Tang members after their first album, facing divergent paths in the years that follow. As with any group navigating the challenging lure of fame and money, it’s a treacherous road — but an indelible journey. “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” Season 3 premieres February 15 on Hulu.
Here’s everything coming to Hulu in February 2023.
February 1
“Taiwan Crime Stories” (Season 1)
“Impractical Jokers” (Seasons 1-3)
“Naruto Shippuden”
“Sherman’s Showcase” (Season 2B)
“2012” (2009)
“50/50” (2011)
“Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeywoman” (2021)
