After the success of the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel in 2019, Vivienne Medrano showed the potential that an adult animated musical series could offer. A potential that saw A24 joining into the animation space, with Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment as producer, leading to an eight episode season on Prime Video and a renewal for season 2. Joining Medrano on the project are songwriters Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg, who used multiple styles of music to give the series a more musical feeling than the pilot episode.
Hazbin Hotel follows Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), daughter of Lucifer and princess of Hell, who dreams of opening a hotel with the (likely impossible) goal of rehabilitating demons to stop Heaven from coming down and culling their population once a year. Prime Video’s Hazbin Hotel is the perpetual underdog of animation. After Vivienne Medrano independently produced and released a pilot on YouTube that racked up millions of views, A24 and Prime Video came calling with a full series order. However, it took several years for the show to reach the streamer.
Now, Hazbin Hotel is one of the most popular animated shows on streaming, with a fervent fanbase that loves it for its irreverent humor, great music, and inventive animation.
As part of the show’s For Your Consideration campaign in the quest for Emmy nominations, FandomWire got to speak with Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano about the show’s world, characters, music, and more.
Hazbin Hotel Interview
FandomWire: When you created Hazbin Hotel years ago as an independently produced pilot, did you ever imagine being in the midst of an Emmy campaign backed by a major streamer?
Vivienne Medrano: No.

Invincible is one of the most critically acclaimed animated shows on television, so it’s no surprise that Prime Video and the team behind the show are mounting an Emmy campaign in the hopes that the series will be recognized at the awards ceremony for the best in the best of television.
We at FandomWire got to sit down with Invincible creator Robert Kirkman to discuss the show’s explosive season 2, why he thinks less familiar forms of animation like Invincible deserve the spotlight, and even a little bit about what fans should expect from the upcoming season 3.
Invincible Interview
FandomWire: I think one of the really interesting things about Invincible‘s Emmy campaign is that we’re on the heels of a legitimization of sorts of superhero media. This genre is no longer on the fringes or even just “popcorn entertainment.” It can be prestige television. The Boys — another...

The latest update on Helluva Boss Season 2 indicates Episode 8's release is imminent.
The eighth episode of the R-rated YouTube comedy has been a long time coming, with the last mainline entry into the series coming back in October 2023.
Since then, the Hazbin Hotel spin-off has remained vague in regard to its return. After being teased for "March or April" release by series star and co-writer Brandon Rogers, the series would eventually be given an official (but nebulous) May release date.

Fearfiction didn’t think cosplay was going to work out for her.
She’d always been a big fan of manga and anime. In fact, anime is “all I watch,” she says. “I barely watch anything else. I connect with it the most.”
And, when you love anime, it’s only natural that you run into cosplay. You either know cosplayers, have cosplayed yourself, or see every fan convention you go to chock full of people dressed up as their favorite characters. Fearfiction–aka Gabby–knew she liked cosplay, but the idea of getting into it herself was intimidating. The costumes she saw were spectacles of skill. She’d have to learn sewing, wig styling, makeup, and much, much more.
“How do you even start with that?...

When My Adventures With Superman debuted last year, it felt like a breath of fresh air amidst a sea of overly dark and dreary takes on the character and on the DC Universe in general. Here was a show that allowed Superman to be a symbol of hope, that allowed Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen to be three-dimensional characters with depth and charm, and allowed the larger DC Universe to be vibrant, bombastic, and centered on literally anyone not named Batman.
Now, the newly minted fan-favorite has returned to screens for its second season. With the origin out of the way and the stakes higher than ever, can the show keep the momentum going and deliver an animated DC show on par with the beloved Animated Universe of old? Yes, the answer is yes. Though please keep in mind that this review only pertains to the first two episodes,...

If you only know Outer Range from the title and the image of Josh Brolin wearing a cowboy hat, you would probably be forgiven for assuming that the show was simply Prime Video’s answer to the extremely popular Yellowstone franchise and nothing more. But for good or ill, it is far more than just that.
The show’s first season, with its ongoing murder mystery and eventual shift into full-on time travel, was more than a little confusing at points; but its strong cast and mostly focused story helped keep things anchored and consistently compelling. Season 2 meanwhile leans hard into the time travel angle and while its ambition is admirable, it becomes abundantly clear that someone lost the plot along the way.

Vivienne Medrano, creator of Hazbin Hotel, already revealed how Alastor died on Earth but also expanded on why he's always seen with a smile.
Alastor, voiced by Amir Talai, was a former radio host and cannibalistic serial killer on Earth before being sent to Hell and quickly ascending to the rank of Overlord.
The means of this abnormal rise to power is a constant question throughout the series, and some fans have even connected it to his permanent grin.

Hazbin Hotel’s Musical Storytelling
This….. Is musical storytelling at its finest. Spawning from a 2019 viral YouTube pilot, A24, Amazon Prime, and creator Vivienne Medrano’s Hazbin Hotel has quickly proven itself to be a massive success; boasting the largest global debut for an animated series on Prime Video….. Ever and scoring rave reviews from both critics and audiences, with Decider’s Raven Brunner praising the “queer, raunchy, and fun” animated series for its “exciting character arcs” and “thrilling story.”
Indeed, one doesn’t have to look too hard at Hazbin Hotel’s unique animation and art style, shockingly dense plot and lore, and unabashedly vulgar sense of humor to see why it’s amassed such a large audience so quickly.

To say I was excited for Invincible Season 2 Part 2 would be an understatement. Since its debut in 2021, Robert Kirkman and Prime Video’s dark and brutal yet consistently earnest take on the superhero genre has been by far one of its best works; a major standout in a market filled to bursting with superhero media and without a doubt the best the genre has been on television to date.
And Season 2’s first half continued and expanded on the solid foundations set by Season 1 with great character work, clever explorations of the multiverse, and the show’s trademark epic and brutal action sequences. And the cliffhanger ending with the legendary Clancy Brown as General Kreeg taking Omni-Man prisoner? Who wouldn’t immediately want to know what happens next?

There was music in the air throughout Super Bowl Lviii. Usher wooed the masses with his singing at the halftime show, and even Ryan Gosling outed himself as a Swiftie in a brand-new trailer for "The Fall Guy." But you know the one place where there wasn't any onscreen singing? The game's first look trailer for "Wicked," "In the Heights" director Jon M. Chu's upcoming two-part film adaptation of one of the most pop-u-lar stage musicals in Broadway history.
Save for a few snippets of off-screen singing (including Cynthia Erivo belting out the show-stopping "Defying Gravity"), the "Wicked' trailer was devoted exclusively to spoken dialogue. This isn't anything new, either. "Wonka," "The Color Purple," and "Mean Girls" were almost single-handedly responsible for keeping theaters afloat in January, yet you might have not realized these films were full of singing and dancing if you went in having only watched their trailers.

The idea that a normal, almost below-average human can ascend to Godhood is a distant concept for us, so seeing it on screen is obviously going to catch our attention.
“Solo Leveling,” originally a web novel, was adapted into a webtoon in 2018 and instantly started making rounds around the internet because of its gorgeous art and compelling storyline. It came to an end in 2021 and had a few side stories released under its name in 2023. But that’s not what revived the buzz around this mega-hit series. Hazbin Hotel recently wrapped up its first season and creator Vivienne Medrano made an exciting announcement about the status of Season 2.
The animated musical comedy series has been a hit for Prime Video, scoring the biggest global debut for viewership of a new animated title on the platform, surpassing shows like Invincible.
Hazbin Hotel Season 2 was confirmed back in September 2023 in a trailer for Season 1. Since then fans have been wondering exactly how long it will take for more episodes to be ready.

The actor behind Alastor from Amazon Studios' Hazbin Hotel animated series shared one of the things they hope to see for the show's Season 2, which has already been greenlit.
Before Hazbin Hotel ever hit Prime Video, it faced an uphill battle. Despite having a huge following with only a prototype pilot released in 2019, the show already had controversies—such as recasting and redesigning most of its original cast.
But the project has gotten over those and has been a hit, with many fans only hoping to see more episodes sooner rather than later.

New quotes from one of Hazbin Hotel's biggest stars rocked the animated series' fanbase with concern growing over Season 2's release date.
Amazon Prime Video's R-rated musical just rounded out its first batch of eight episodes on the service after three weeks of animated hell-based mayhem.
The wait for the first season was a long one, initially debuting as an animated pilot on YouTube in 2019 before being picked up for a two-season order by Amazon Studios and A24.

The final episodes of Hazbin Hotel are out, and I found them to be quite exciting, to say the very least. The battle between Hell and Heaven in a musical format with quite a bit of swearing was pretty interesting to see, and even though I didn’t enjoy some parts, the philosophy of the show is something that could have worked in a feature film too. It’s the joy and fun plus the total abandon that animation brings that perhaps the live action may not have been able to match up to. In the previous episodes, Charlie’s plans had failed up to the point that Adam was more eager than ever to come down to Hell with his army and take part in the semi-annual extermination. Now only a few days remain, and we will see how the battle between Hell and Heaven goes down.

At the end of 2022, I was given the Goliath task of explaining to our readers (and much of our staff) why the internet had gone completely feral over the animated design of the Devil Daddy himself, Lucifer Morningstar, on "Hazbin Hotel." Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano debuted the animated musical pilot for "Hazbin Hotel" on YouTube in 2019, funded entirely by Medrano's Patreon followers and brought to life completely by freelance animators. It quickly went viral and generated a diehard fanbase, one that exists on the fringes of fandom circles and well outside of four-quadrant entertainment.
It's adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons." It's as raunchy as "South Park," but caters to a queerer audience base. “On paper, there’s a lot of people that might say no to something like this — a very raunchy animated musical comedy world written by a young woman,” Hazbin Hotel star Stephanie Beatriz tells The Hollywood Reporter. But for the Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Encanto actress, showrunner Vivienne Medrano’s “weird, cool, fantastical imagination” has produced a series that is not only “delightfully horny, unhinged and ridiculous,” but uniquely special beyond its “small minutiae of cock jokes.
“It somehow manages to have this throughline of true gay love and this very big idea about whether it’s possible to redeem a soul, to change after being damned for all time,” she says of A24’s first foray into animation and Prime Video’s latest push into the medium’s R-rated adult space. “I just love Vivienne’s world-building.”
Broadway star and lead voice actress Erika Henningsen offers similar praise.

One of the most exciting new animated series this year is Hazbin Hotel, a Prime Video series from Vivienne Medrano that tells the surreal tale of Charlie Morningstar (voiced by Erika Henningsen), the princess of Hell, who tires of an annual purge whereby angels descend from Heaven to smite demons, and, along with her girlfriend Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz), creates the Hazbin Hotel — a rehab clinic of sorts for those in Hell so that they can gain entry into the Kingdom of Heaven.

The new episodes of Hazbin Hotel are out, and it looks like Charlie has not yet given up on the idea that Hell-dwellers can be redeemed. The next extermination was coming soon, and Charlie needed to get a meeting with Heaven. She didn’t know whom to contact. Previously, she had contacted Heaven’s embassy and had been shunned by Adam. Now she wanted to meet with a higher authority, as she truly believed there had been some progress. She had nothing to show for it, but it was just her wishful thinking on display, and her delusion had to be supported by Vaggie, who hid a terrible secret about her life. The fifth episode introduced us to Lucifer, a depressed dad, trying to live out his meaningless existence who gets surprised when Charlie asks for help.

Many fans have been voicing their dissatisfaction with the controversial choice to recast the original cast of Hazbin Hotel, which is now an Amazon Studios animated series.
The show follows Charlie Morningstar, the daughter of Lucifer, as she establishes a new hotel in Hell where sinners can be redeemed so they can make it into Heaven.
The project first started as a pilot on YouTube in 2019, where it became massively popular. From there, it was picked up by A24 and then Amazon Studios.

Hazbin Hotel, the first foray into animation for award-winning studio A24, is actually not new, despite having debuted on Prime Video just last Friday.
The R-rated musical comedy originated online as a 30-minute pilot in 2019 and quickly won over a fanbase that has largely stuck by it since its self-funded days. The series follows princess of Hell Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), who in an attempt to stop the angels from murderously purging her demonic subjects, opens a hotel to help rehabilitate them. The goal: Turn these sinners into saints unable to be wiped out by the (unsettlingly terrifying) angels.
She’s joined — in certain cases against their will — by friends, funders and her father (that’s Lucifer voiced by Jeremy Jordan). That includes Charlie’s grounded girlfriend Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz); exasperated bartender Husk (Keith David); sex worker and rehabilitation Guinea pig Anthony “Angel Dust” (Blake Roman); Alastor the “Radio Demon...

I didn’t think I needed to see an adult animated series made solely around the concept of Hell and Heaven, but Hazbin Hotel has changed my mind. In this trippy and weird animated musical about the politics of damnation and redemption, one can feel like the makers have taken inspiration from old cartoons and infused some dark themes that we generally reserve for gritty dramas. There is a witty story drawn from Adam and Eve describing how Hell was formed, and soon we are plunged into Hell, the origin of all monstrosity, but Heaven has its part to play in it as well. The cheeky and blasphemous nature of the series makes it a risky adventure, but there are some interesting characters in the show that are skillfully explored within this microcosm.

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.
