The television industry has always been a fiercely competitive environment, and in an era of content overload, it has become absolutely ruthless: any show that fails to deliver the ratings expected of it is easily canceled, regardless of the long-term plans of its showrunners.
One such victim was Awake, a thrilling sci-fi mystery starring The Oa's Jason Isaacs that aired on NBC in 2012.
What is Awake About?
Awake was a project with one of the most intriguing premises of its time: an ordinary police detective Michael Britten gets into a car accident with his family – wife Hannah and son Rex. After the accident, Michael's son survives. However, the next morning the main character wakes up and finds out that his wife survived the accident, and it was his son who died.
Detective Britten finds himself in two parallel universes, in each of which only one member of his family survived.

When the first season of The Oa dropped on Netflix without any warning eight years ago, there was little to prepare viewers. The duo who created, wrote, and directed the series, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, had made a few interesting films, but were almost unknown outside of Sundance.
Their style of filmmaking in The Oa hypnotized, puzzled, and unsettled the viewers. It was a mixture of a dozen genres, switching from sci-fi thriller to teen drama.
However, the fact that the project did not fit into any framework apparently forced Netflix to cancel The Oa after two seasons, leaving fans without one of the most innovative sci-fi projects of the 21st century. Many viewers still hope to see the story continue in some form – a new season, a game or a comic book.

This was a much-overdue showcase for Oa that finally addressed the effects of his time with the Army in Afghanistan.
Not surprisingly, a case involving several Taliban on FBI Season 6 Episode 11 stirred things up for him.
And, frankly, you can never go wrong with a guest turn by Kate Burton portraying a weaselly politician.
It wasn't readily apparent why the FBI even got called in on an abduction of a random guy from his apartment building.
It must have been because NYPD discovered his boss was Leo Grant, the world's third-richest man, and they didn't want the inevitable pressure from above. Or maybe they passed it off because Tyler had wealthy parents, which would also lead to outside interference.
Oa was just relieved to get a call about any case so he would have an excuse not to explain the most painful time in his life to Gemma.

Exclusive: Here’s some buzzy casting. Greta Lee (Past Lives) and Kingsley Ben-Adir (Bob Marley: One Love) are in negotiations to star in director and producer Louis Leterrier’s (Now You See Me) upcoming sci-fi horror film 11817.
Both actors are on a roll. The former is coming off a string of hits including Oscar nominee Past Lives, Apple TV drama The Morning Show and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, while Ben-Adir’s last two movies couldn’t have gone much better in the shape of box office hits Bob Marley: One Love and Barbie.
In 11817, inexplicable forces trap a family of four inside their house indefinitely. As both modern luxuries and life or death essentials begin to run out, the family must learn how to be resourceful to survive and outsmart who – or what – is keeping them trapped.
Additional casting is underway on the project, which is based on a script by Matthew Robinson.

“A Murder at the End of the World” creator, director and actor Brit Marling traced the whodunnit genre back to “between the First and the Second World War, which makes sense because that was another time that everyone was kind of looking around and being like, okay, who did this? How did we get to the place that we’re in? One of the most prominent TV series of the 21st century, the sci-fi drama The Oa, was canceled after its second season. And this is probably the worst decision made by Netflix since the adaptation of Winx Club.
The show, created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, is about a blind girl named Prairie who returns to her hometown after a mysterious seven-year absence. As the case unfolds, it is revealed that she has been held captive by a mad scientist who studies near-death experiences. Prairie gathers a group of people around her and initiates them into the mystery of her life, which she was able to comprehend after her clinical death.
The Oa Still Remains Netflix’s Main Hidden Gem
Unfortunately, The Oa remained a hidden gem of the Netflix collection – few people watched the series, but those who did were extremely enthusiastic. Critics called it the Twin Peaks of a new generation,...

What started off as a creative fantasy story unintentionally became hyperrealistic in Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s hit limited series A Murder at the End of the World.
The writing duo, who also served as co-creators, directors and EPs of the FX series, sat down at Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to discuss the inspiration behind the mystery.
Marling explained that the idea of the tech retreat came to them back in 2019, after several of their own friends had gone through similar experiences, describing how interesting she found it that “Everyone’s so willing to surrender to the largess of the billionaire, but what are the billionaire’s intentions?”
At the time, artificial intelligence was nowhere near where it is today, with several of their own friends attempting to discourage them from making it so central to the plot saying “AI’s so far away, do Mars, do this,...

The Liane Moriarty cinematic universe has now come to Peacock, but how does one adapt the author behind “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers” work for the screen?
“Apples Never Fall” showrunner Melanie Marnich told IndieWire that maintaining beloved novelist Moriarty’s “page-turner energy” was key for adapting the twisted family drama starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill.
“The pacing of those kinds of moments was to make the TV show have the same page-turner energy of the book,” Marnich said. “It was something I had to really be aware of. In the writer’s room, we worked really hard to craft the sort of constant turn of the story. It was so juicy. I’m a huge fan of Liane. I really, really worked to capture that same page turner energy in the show to keep things moving, but also never at the sacrifice of character development.”

Oa had himself one lousy day, didn't he?
First, it was his new girlfriend, Gemma, on FBI Season 6 Episode 4.
Then, it was a wild card of a Muslim FBI agent who served as a funhouse mirror for Omar.
Let's start with the latter first, since it was the more intriguing of the two storylines.
We can all agree that Gemma is a mistake that Oa hasn't recognized yet.
Hassan, played by English actor Elyes Gabel (Scorpion), had a chip on his shoulder. He felt that he had to do more just to be accepted by the Wasps in the FBI.
As Oa explained to Hassan, he saw himself as an FBI agent, not a Muslim FBI agent.
They're both likely fooling themselves.
Oa can't ever escape the fact that others will view him as Muslim. But there's always going to be a place for someone such as Hassan who can...

Oscar-nominated “Nyad” star Annette Bening on Peacock? Well, sometimes miracles do happen.
“Apples Never Fall” creator Melanie Marnich wanted to swing big when it came to pitching her take on the Liane Moriarty thriller novel adaptation. Despite never having showrun before, she was determined to cast A-lister Bening as Joy Delaney, a tennis pro coach matriarch who goes missing. While all signs point to her husband Stan (Sam Neill) as the most likely culprit, Joy’s case unlocks further Delaney family secrets swirling around their four children, played by Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, and Essie Randles.
Bening, in fact, was at the center of Marnich’s initial pitch to Peacock.
“When [producer] David Heyman was looking for writers for the project I was like, ‘I’m going for it. I want this one,'” Marnich told IndieWire. “I think in my initial pitch to him, I was like, ‘I see Annette Bening as Joy.

In Hear Me Out, Primetimer staffers and contributors espouse their pet theories, hot takes, and even the occasional galaxy-brain idea.
It's all about the glasses. Those horn-rimmed glasses favored by Clive Owen's character in the FX series A Murder at the End of the World had me suspicious from the start. As a fan of Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij's The Oa, I was primed to expect anything, on any plane of existence, out of their new series. The Oa traversed between dimensions, brought the dead back to life, opened portals with modern dance, and gave sight to the blind. I wasn't about to get caught off-guard with what was seemingly just a murder mystery.

Brit Marling spent the summer of her junior year at Georgetown University interning at Goldman Sachs, an investment firm that this very publication once called “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity.” She ended that summer with a cushy job offer — only to reject it and, along with her pal Mike Cahill, head to Cuba to film a documentary about boxers and ballerinas caught in the middle of the U.S.-Cuba imbroglio. Marling drank from the capitalist cup, and it left a very bitter taste in her mouth.

Fusion Entertainment has signed Bria Vinaite, an actress who got her breakout role as a woman living on the economic fringes in Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project.”
The Lithuania-born actress was discovered by filmmaker Baker when she was working in the fashion industry and cast in the lead part of a struggling single mother raising her daughter in a motel. Her performance earned Vinaite multiple award nominations from critics groups including Chicago Film Critics Association and San Diego Film Critics Association.
Since “The Florida Project” debuted in 2017, Vinaite has gone on to act in TV series including “The Oa” and films such as “Balance Not Symmetry” and “Lost in Transmissions.” Next year, she will star in “Pandemonium,” the latest feature from Icelandic filmmaker Anton Sigurdsson. It follows a group of wealthy New Yorkers trapped at a wellness retreat run by a nefarious guru. The film shoots in New Jersey...
