It’s no secret Ke Huy Quan has had an amazing comeback. Although he could already consider himself sealed in the book of pop culture for his turn as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and as Data in The Goonies, Quan would step into his first role back in an Academy Award-winning role in and Academy Award-winning movie with Everything Everywhere All at Once. He will also be headlining his first lead role in the action film With Love, that’s produced by The Fall Guy director David Leitch.
Upon his comeback, Quan got to join the MCU in Loki as a Tva employee called O.B. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Quan talks about how he sees O.B. as a variant of his famous character Data from The Goonies, complete with an easter egg where Data’s belt makes an appearance.

Pixar has made some of the most beloved and narratively fulfilling animated films for many years. The company is behind some of the biggest hits including the Toy Story franchise, A Bug’s Life, Monster’s Inc, and Inside Out. However, the past few years have not been great for the company with Elemental and Lightyear becoming box office disappointments.
Buzz Lightyear and Woody in 1995’s Toy Story | Pixar Animation Studios
There was decent hype around Lightyear as it was a spin-off of the Toy Story franchise centering on the beloved character Buzz Lightyear, who is turned into an actual human and not a toy. Unfortunately, the film didn’t connect with audiences and was a huge bomb. The creative head of Pixar, Pete Docter reflected on its failure and how they overestimated the audience’s nerd level.

Many still rewatch the film and celebrate its narrative triumph.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys: Ride or Die | Sony Entertainment
After the recent soaring success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, from a screenplay by Chris Bremner & Will Beall, the anticipation for the fifth installment is as electric as the chases down Miami’s palm-lined streets. It is obvious that this universe still has untold stories waiting to be told, echoing the thoughts of the leading actors themselves, who recently expressed their appreciation for the fifth movie’s potential.

Whenever a Sony movie comes in at No. 1, Tom Rothman drives his 1967 Ford Mustang to the Culver City lot and leaves it parked in front of the Thalberg building. But on Monday, there was a hitch after Bad Boys: Ride or Die opened to a victorious $56.5 million at the domestic box office: the red beauty wouldn’t start.

Making an acting debut at the age of 13, Ryan Gosling began his career with kid-friendly roles such as The Mickey Mouse Club before branching off into the likes of Are You Afraid of the Dark, while still a child actor. A crime thriller, The Believer, marked his breakthrough role in 2001 and sent him off on a journey that would see him play versatile roles across dozens of genres.
However, he would still venture into the more serious side of cinema with new roles, even as light-hearted ones kept coming.

No, it's not the early 2000s. Be that as it may, not one but two "Lord of the Rings" movies found themselves comfortably in the top 10 at the box office this past weekend. Indeed, thanks to a re-release of Peter Jackson's much-beloved trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy saga by Fathom Events, both "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers" managed to sneak past "The Strangers: Chapter 1" to make it onto the charts.
"Fellowship of the Ring" found itself at number eight over the weekend with a $2.45 million haul, just behind "The Fall Guy" ($2.59 million). Landing at number nine was "The Two Towers," which pulled in $1.9 million. Warner Bros. and Fathom released both films on just over 1,500 screens. What's more, these were the 4K remastered, extended editions of the films, meaning they clocked in at nearly four hours each. Plus, they played just once each day across the country,...

After working as an actor on shows like Sons of Anarchy and Veronica Mars, Taylor Sheridan bravely took a path toward realizing his creative potential and ended up in the writer’s chair. And what a transition it has been! His remarkable evolution blossomed with Sicario’s gripping screenplay, a brilliant example of his storytelling prowess.
The 2015 action-thriller, helmed by the visionary Denis Villeneuve, not only set a milestone for 21st-century cinema but also served as a vehicle for Emily Blunt’s powerful portrayal of Kate Mercer, an FBI agent waging a relentless battle against the drug cartels.
Still from Sicario (2015) | Lionsgate
Deeply grounded in reality, Blunt’s character was inspired by a formidable real-life figure, mirroring Sheridan’s quest for authentic, multi-dimensional storytelling. You may be surprised to learn that the studio actually considered casting a man in the role before The Fall Guy actress was chosen.

Something normal happened at Netflix. “Hit Man,” a well-reviewed film from a top director (Richard Linklater) and a hot star (Glen Powell) in an audience-friendly action title, debuted as #1 on the streamer’s top 10 movie list.
Something very weird happened at the same time. “Godzilla Minus One,” which had a long-delayed appearance in home formats, made it to #1 both at Netflix and on VOD ($5.99 rental) in its first week. By week two, it fell to #6 at Netflix, while dropping from the top spot at iTunes to #7.
Netflix acquired “Hit Man” for $20 million last year when it premiered at Venice and Toronto to great interest. Reviewed (82 Metacritic) at the level or ahead of most of the streamer’s late-year awards-bait films, the action comedy about a moonlighting professor working undercover for New Orleans police has been #1 for the last three days. Unlike most Netflix originals, does it have staying power?

When the summer was in need of saving, Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett came to the rescue. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited on screen over the weekend in "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," the fourth installment of the long-running franchise, serving as a sequel to 2020's "Bad Boys for Life." Much has happened in the four years since that movie came out but one important thing hasn't changed: people really love these characters. As such, the new movie easily topped the box office with an impressive global debut.
"Ride or Die" opened to $56.5 million domestically, which was above weekend estimates. It was a little below the $62.5 million that "Bad Boys for Life" opened to in 2020 but that movie also opened in January when there is generally far less competition. The buzziest moment of Saturday Night Live‘s recently concluded 49th season faced no shortage of hurdles in getting to the screen — and actually was several years in the making.
During Ryan Gosling’s return to NBC’s long-running late night sketch comedy series on April 13 for his third time as host, he and castmember Mikey Day played two attendees at a NewsNation taping who happen to be dead ringers for Beavis and Butt-Head, respectively, the slacker teens who debuted in 1993 on the Mike Judge-created MTV cartoon series.

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock’s electrifying bus-set thriller acts as a reminder of just how good we used to have it
At a time of overwhelming entertainment bloat – budget, length, content, discussion – a ride back to the summer of 1994 and the brisk, brilliant economy of Speed feels like the satisfying small-screen vacation we all deserve right now.
Dutch cinematographer turned director Jan de Bont’s breath-stealing action movie hasn’t gained any extra depth or allegorical meaning when rewatched 30 years later (it’s mercifully thinkpiece-proof in its earnest straightforwardness) but it has benefited from a bleak comparison with where Hollywood is at this precarious moment. It’s been a mostly bummer summer at the box office with a panic over expensive big-bet films like The Fall Guy and Furiosa stumbling while the majority who choose streaming instead having to settle for murky, poorly made dreck like Atlas, a much-watched yet much-loathed Netflix night-ruiner.

Despite big stars such as Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling having blockbuster releases this year, the first half of 2024 seems to be a lackluster year for Hollywood. The industry has seen many sure-shot films bomb at the box office this year. While Dune: Part Two remains the highest-grossing film of the year, it was released in March.
Films such as The Fall Guy and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which were touted to be huge hits have all taken a huge loss at the box office, making studios reconsider their strategies. Making it worse is the success of small-budget films such as Tarot, which has become the year’s most profitable film with a $45 million box office against an $8 million budget.

Good news for those Bad Boys: audiences are still ride or die for the exploits of Mike and Marcus. That’s reflected in the opening weekend box office figures for the buddy-action franchise’s fourth instalment, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, which saw Will Smith and Martin Lawrence draw in an impressive haul – earning over $100 million worldwide. In a stuttering summer, with major movies like Furiosa and The Fall Guy underperforming, that’s a significant success; particularly considering Bad Boys doesn’t sit on the CGI-heavy mega-spectacle end of the blockbuster spectrum.
Bad Boys: Ride Or Die earned $56 million at the US box office, and added $48 million from across the rest of the world, all adding up to an opening weekend of $104 million. That’s significantly higher than the opening haul for The Fall Guy (around $65 million), and Furiosa (roughly $59 million). The film is directed by Adil & Bilall – who...

Yet again, a new title has claimed the top spot of the box-office weekend as Bad Boys: Ride or Die debuted a whopping $46 million ahead of its nearest competition.
In its first weekend of release, Bad Boys: Ride or Die brought in $56.0 million for Sony Pictures Releasing, easily capturing the number one spot of the box-office weekend top ten. Although the newest “Bad Boys,” reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami cops, arrived on the higher end of expectations with $56 million in domestic ticket sales, the year-to-date deficit actually grew more pronounced. Heading into the weekend, ticket sales were 24% behind 2023 and now overall revenues are lagging by 26% according to Comscore.
“Bad Boys 4” isn’t to blame for the decline; analysts believe it’s the lack of enthusiasm for other titles in the marketplace. Four of the other top five releases — Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” ($10 million), Paramount’s fantasy comedy “If” ($8 million), the Warner Bros. supernatural thriller and fellow newcomer “The Watchers” ($7.4 million) and Disney and 20th Century’s sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ($5.4 million) — brought in scraps.

Theaters will live to fight another day. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) provided more than half of the gross this weekend, taking #1 with $56 million. That isn’t a record for the franchise (with previous films at lower ticket prices), but it is a critical victory for the industry at a time it desperately needs them.
Will Smith’s first wide release since his catastrophic Oscar behavior in 2022 represents a triumph for star power, franchise filmmaking, action titles, and titles that draw from minority audiences (over two thirds for the weekend were Black and Latino). Most of all, it was a vital sign that underperformance for highly touted summer films isn’t a given.
In the face of rising industry panic, an under-$40 million opening for “Ride or Die” (its 2020 predecessor opened to $62 million) could have ratched the doom and despair to toxic levels. Instead, it blew past tracking projections...

The first full weekend of June brought a modicum of hope to the summer box office, as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited for the fourth installment of their popular “Bad Boys” action-comedy franchise. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” had been planned since 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” became the highest-grossing blockbuster that year, partially due to Covid shutting down theaters a few weeks after its release. Opening in 3,885 theaters, including IMAX and other premium screens, “Ride or Die” received mixed reviews with 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it was expected to be fairly review-proof with the popularity of its two stars. It ended up making $5.88 million in Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, and $21.6 million on Friday, including those previews.
Sony is estimating it to make $56 million in North America its opening weekend, which is less than the previous movie’s $62.5 million holiday opening,...

In a summer full of movies underperforming at the box office, the old-fashioned star power of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence propelled Bad Boys: Ride or Die to a strong start this weekend with a $56 million opening. That’s at least $10 million more than even the most optimistic box office predictions (we predicted way less) and a strong rebound for Will Smith, whose box office prowess has been in question ever since the infamous Oscar slap seemingly hurt his brand.
Whatever the case, audiences seemed more than willing to embrace the star again. The Bad Boys four-quel posted the franchise’s second-biggest opening, following Bad Boys For Life, which started with $62 million in 2020. Updated: Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die pummeled pre-weekend opening projections, coming in with a $104.6M global bow, including $48.6M from the international box office. While the overseas debut is slightly off 2020’s Bad Boys for Life which did $50.3M in like-for-like offshore markets at today’s exchange rates, that film had strong legs. Either way, Ride or Die‘s start gave some much needed oomph to summer turnstiles. Its launch is 58% bigger than Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
The Will Smith/Martin Lawrence reteam from directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah was driven overseas by Europe with $19.3M across the region. It set new regional records for the Bad Boys franchise in Latin America and the Middle East with $10M and $9.5M, respectively.
Of the 60 markets released this session, the UK leads with $4.9M (+ 31% over Furiosa). Mexico was next with $4.2M, followed by Germany at $3.7M (2.5x...

Turns out, Bad Boys are good for ticket sales.
Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth entry in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led buddy cop series, started strong with $56 million from 3,885 theaters in its domestic debut. The film also opened at the international box office with $48.6 million, bringing its worldwide tally to $104.6 million.
The sequel to 1995’s “Bad Boys,” 2003’s “Bad Boys II” and 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” is notable as Smith’s first major film to grace the big screen since he assaulted Chris Rock on stage at the 2022 Oscars. So what should Hollywood take away from “Bad Boys” in its fourth go-around? Well, audiences haven’t soured on Smith — though it helps that he returned to theaters in a time-tested and generally well-received franchise.

The boys are back in town. Sony and Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” got off to a solid start at the box office with $21.6 million from 3,885 locations across Friday and preview screenings. The movie also gets a revenue boost from Imax and other premium large format auditoriums.
The action sequel, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is now looking at an opening of $53 million through the three-day frame in North America. Sony had initially projected a debut of $30 million heading into the weekend, going way below industry estimates of $45 million to $50 million. The studio seems to have made a cautious lowball, considering “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” have given the summer box office a run of high-profile titles debuting below expectations.

In the wake of a slow return to production post WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, industry contraction, and an extended M&a deal for a major studio that has kept the whole town on pins and needles, Hollywood really needs a break. Creatives and executives alike were hoping for a boost in the form of a strong summer box office, but after almost every blockbuster released in the last month failed to meet expectations, a panic that’s been in place for a while now refuses to relent. As the traditional process of producing and distributing film and television hurdles towards oblivion, the best thing one can do is take a step back and gain some perspective. Ironically enough, I believe the best place to do this is actually… at a movie theater. Just not the kind you’re probably thinking of.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been under pressure to include a new stunt category at the Oscars for years, but it just hasn’t happened… yet
While speaking with Empire, Academy CEO Bill Kramer said, “We’re talking to members of the stunt community who are Academy members about the possibility of that. We added a new award that will launch in two years for Casting Directors, so we’re always open to those discussions.” The new award Kramer mentions was announced earlier this year. It will recognize achievement in casting and will first be presented during the 2026 Oscar ceremony. Prior to this, the last new Oscar category was Best Animated Feature, which was announced in 2001, with Shrek taking home the inaugural award.

Jude Law is ready to be challenged by screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes.
Law shared in an interview with Vanity Fair that he is set to work with “Challengers” scribe Kuritzkes on a Mike Nichols-inspired film.
“I’m developing a project with Justin Kuritzkes, who just wrote ‘Challengers,'” Law said. “The thing that bonded us was Mike Nichols. I said, ‘I think this is a Mike Nichols film.’ He was like, ‘Well, you would know.’ He felt the same when he went into ‘Challengers.'”
While Law kept the details of their upcoming project under wraps, he did reveal there would be a “sexual-social intercourse” element, much like in tense love triangle dramedy “Challengers” and late filmmaker Nichols’ famed works. Nichols directed Law in the 2004 romantic quadrangle drama “Closer.”

Would-be summer blockbusters have had a bit of a hard time pulling in audiences lately. These movies not only failed to meet expectations but have also started to make cinema observers second guess what the audience and moviegoers crave. Movies like The Fall Guy and Furiosa have had good buzz building before their premieres and both were generally well received by the critics and people who saw it. However, neither made much in the way of money, and even a seemingly sure thing like Garfield didn’t fare much better.
The real test comes with the summer release titles like Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2 or Despicable Me 4. All of them are movie sequels with pre-established fan bases and past successes. However, Bad Boys: Ride or Die is also somewhat of a litmus test. The franchise has been a big money-maker, and it may give an insight into whether...

It might take some “Bad Boys” to save this summer’s bad box office start.
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” has made $5.875 million in Thursday previews at the box office so far.
Sony and Columbia’s fourth “Bad Boys” movie, and the follow-up to 2020’s surprise hit “Bad Boys for Life,” is expected to open between $45 million and $50 million this weekend. However, Sony has a smaller estimate at $30 million. The more conservative projection could be overly cautious due to the growing number of summer films, such as “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “If” and “The Fall Guy,” that have failed to connect with theatergoers.
With the summer box office far behind previous years’ grosses, theater owners are hoping for some relief sooner rather than later — and hopefully “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is their answer. It also marks Smith’s first major film since...

A biopic based on the life of legendary singer-songwriter and dancer Michael Jackson has been in the works at Lionsgate. The project is generating plenty of hype with its first-look images and the talented cast attached to it. Therefore, it is understandable why Lionsgate executive Jim Packer feels that the movie will become the studio’s biggest hit of all time.

Whether you like them, the Oscars are the most glamorous and most-cited film award in the world. The award is far from perfect or fair, but it is a part of history and even if you don’t like them, you cannot ignore them. The most recent time that a new award category was introduced to the ceremony was in 2001 when the Best Animated Feature Film category was introduced. Next year will see the first annual Best Casting Award, but the Academy is – based on the exclusive information shared by Empire – considering another new category, one for the stuntmen and their work.
A stunt category has been discussed for years, and members of the stuntmen community have been putting pressure on the Academy to add one such category for a while now. And while the Academy never openly rejected this, nothing has been done about it, but the heads of...

Oscar high-ups have revealed that early talks are underway to introduce some long overdue recognition for the stunt performer community.
They were one of the cornerstone elements of movies in the silent era, helping to establish cinema as an art form. Not only have they graced some of the greatest films ever made, but they are integral to some of the most magical moments in the history of cinema. We’re talking of course about stunts.
For far too long, the incredible (and dangerous) work that stunt performers do hasn’t been recognised by the Oscars, the world’s most high-profile awards show. As such, other major shows in the awards circuit (for the most part) have also neglected to add stunt sequences as a category, meaning that the stunt performer community have to honour their own community at bespoke award events like the Taurus World Stunt Awards.

It seems the daredevil actions on display in Ryan Gosling’s recent flick, The Fall Guy, are not just ratcheting up audiences but also spotlighting a long-overdue ovation for daring stunt performers. For decades, the unsung heroes behind those heart-stopping action sequences have been hovering just out of the Academy Award’s limelight.
Yet, recent reports suggest a seismic shift, with industry titans such as Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise possibly flashing their charismatic smiles in a future Oscars Stunt category. According to Empire’s in-depth conversations with the Academy’s visionaries, who are tirelessly refining and modernizing the institution to mirror the changing facets of filmmaking, the tides appear to be turning.

The Offspring have announced their 11th studio album, Supercharged, arriving October 11th. The punk veterans also offered up the lead single, “Make It All Right.”
The feel-good song is ripe for the summertime with a catchy “ba-ba-da” sing-a-long refrain, anthemic power-pop chords, and the imitable and endearingly nasally voice of Dexter Holland. The track oozes positivity and joy.

When Adam Wingard said he would not return for the follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, fans of Legendary‘s latest clash of the titans fell into despair. Wingard brought something special to Godzilla and Kong’s latest city-destroying brawl, and we hoped he’d remain a part of the franchise. Thankfully, Grant Sputore, the director of Hilary Swank’s sci-fi thriller I Am Mother, is stepping up to the plate.
The follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire should continue the story from Wingard’s latest blockbuster, focusing on Kong and Godzilla’s tag team antics alongside several Titans waiting in the wings. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writer Dave Callaham will pen the script.
While Sputore is in, Wingard is moving on to direct Onslaught for A24. Wingard directed 2022’s Godzilla vs. Kong and this year’s Godzilla x Kong: New Empire.

It’s a sad day for moviegoers living in Texas and Minnesota as Alamo Drafthouse closes its doors in six locations after the franchise filed for bankruptcy. The closures include five locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and a Minnesota theater in Woodbury. The closures are already in effect, with termination of employment contracts to follow immediately. A message to employees is circulating online mentioning the company losing $1 million in 2023. The reality is that Alamo Drafthouse has been fighting an uphill battle since the pandemic. People go to the theater less than they used to, not even for quality cinema experiences like The Fall Guy and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Beyond the pandemic, Alamo Drafthouse suffered a tremendous loss during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, when new films were slow to open and streaming services pumped out movies like they were going out of style. Many people became comfortable...

Six Alamo Drafthouse franchised locations are closing abruptly after their owner filed for bankruptcy.
The venues include five Texas locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as a Minnesota venue in Woodbury. The theaters are operated by Two is One, One is None, LLC, which is filing for Chapter 7. The closure is effective immediately and staff has been informed that their employment has been terminated. In a message from the franchisee to employees that was circulating on social media, the owners said they lost “over $1 million” in 2023. The Texas theaters are located in Richardson, Las Colinas, Lake Highlands, Dallas, and Denton.
The closures come as the summer box office is suffering a steep decline, with major films such as “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa” failing to connect with audiences. Hollywood has also struggled to release as many films theatrically, after enduring production shutdowns during Covid and the 2023 actors and writers strikes.

For years now, pressure has been building for the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Scientists to include a category at the Oscars celebrating stunt work. After all, it’s a major cinematic discipline, responsible for some of the most jaw-dropping feats to grace the big screen – but, for the last century-or-so, has gone unrecognised at Hollywood’s biggest awards show. Most recently, the release of stunt-centric summer blockbuster The Fall Guy saw its cast and crew repeatedly go to bat for including a stunt category at the Oscars – and the conversation hasn’t gone unnoticed.
At Cannes, Empire sat down with the heads of the Academy, who are in the process of reshaping the institution and bringing the industry’s starriest night up to standard. And, as part of that, they have indeed started making enquiries about a Stunts category. “We’re talking to members of the stunt community...

Ryan Gosling is making the dreams of “Saturday Night Live” writers come true.
In addition to reprising his iconic role for a sequel to skit “Papyrus,” penned by Julio Torres, it’s now been revealed that Gosling’s viral “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch was a shelved idea from 2018, with Jonah Hill originally being set to portray one half of the cartoon-character duo.
“SNL” hair stylist Jodi Mancuso and makeup artist Louie Zakarian both told The Ankler that the skit was originally pitched when Jonah Hill was hosting a Season 44 episode in November 2018. However, it was canceled due to challenges with the necessary prosthetics.
“Even at that time it was late coming into the show, so there wasn’t a lot of prep time and I wasn’t fully happy with the wigs,” Mancuso said. “Then I think we tried it again, and again I wasn’t happy with it. So...
