Directed by Robert Morgan and starring Aisling Franciosi, Stopmotion blends live-action and stop-motion animation in a way that has garnered a 91% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, yet only a 50% audience score. An Artist’s Descent The film follows Ella Blake, a stop-motion animator grappling with the loss of her mother while attempting to complete her mother’s final project. As she dives deeper into her work, the lines between reality and her creations begin to blur, resulting in grotesque and haunting...

If you though Five Nights at Freddy's was fun but not too scary, we think we have a puppet horror movie that will make you want to rewatch the Josh Hutcherson movie just to calm yourself down.
A Shudder freshest original, this one has already tickled the nerves of moviegoers in February, collecting a modest box office of a little more than $800,000. The movie, titled Stopmotion, has drawn a very different reaction from critics and viewers: while the former were left in awe (proved by 90% on Tomatometer), the audience wasn't that impressed, giving it only 50%.
While Five Nights at Freddy's is an example of puppet horror movie that clearly enjoyed a more massive success, Stopmotion is your must-watch if you crave something way scarier and unsettling than just moderately scary animatronics in an abandoned pizza place.

We believe it is safe to say that Spring is finally here in North America. Relatively safe. Pretty sure it is safe. Not only will April showers bring May flowers but May also sees the arrival of the new Danish horror flick Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, and the UK horror flick, Stopmotion. Next month also sees the ongoing live watch parties every other Friday night of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. Four Toxic Avenger films are coming to the repertory programming next month. We don't know if Bob Clark's Deathdream and Buddy Giovinazzo's Combat Shock are considered part of the Namsploitation genre but they're two Nam-era horror flicks to keep an eye out for next month. While we still don't know what...

Stopmotion is a horror movie directed by Robert Morgan starring Aisling Franciosi.
“Stopmotion” is a classic horror movie built around a tired yet classic theme: madness. Visually, it’s solid, packed with innovative ideas, and skillfully blends the visual component with the engaging plot that progressively picks up pace.
While it’s not groundbreaking or going to keep you up at night with terror, it is an enjoyable watch with a psychedelic touch, reminiscent of David Lynch’s style.
Plot
A young girl lives with her mother, both of them working on an animation film. When the mother suddenly suffers a debilitating shock, the girl starts to film her own animation movie with a strange girl who writes a chilling script about an “ash man.”

Plot: Ella Blake is a stop-motion animator who is struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother. Suddenly alone in the world, she embarks upon the creation of a macabre new puppet film, which soon becomes the battleground for her sanity.
Review: Every year, during the barren months of January and February, there’s always some horror movie that comes along and stuns. Last year had Infinity Pool, and 2024 has Stopmotion. Just like the former, the latter is a mind-bending, horrific experience. The melding of stop-motion animation with horror is the perfect pairing. But it’s the story of a young girl slowly going insane that will stick with you long after the credits roll.
Aisling Franciosi is absolutely incredible as Ella Blake, a young woman obsessed with animation. But her mother is so overbearing that she’s never really able to explore her own creative side.

Stop-motion has come a long way from the silly penguins and giant peaches of our childhood. In recent years there has been a very strong (and very welcome) push on indie stop-motion horror projects, but very few as haunting and downright gross as Robert Morgan’s new feature Stopmotion. Weaving terrifying images of puppet mayhem with live-action madness, Stopmotion dive deep into the troubled psyche of a young woman tormented by her own hand-crafted horrors.
Stopmotion stars Aisling Franciosi as a struggling stop-motion animator, working through her personal demons with her art. Genre fans will no doubt recognize Franciosi from Jennifer Kent’s sophomore feature Nightingale (2018) and more recently, André Øvredal’s Last Voyage of The Demeter (2023). Her performance here in equally as brooding and haunted, but while those previous roles saw her battling the evil of men and fabled monsters, Stopmotion turns that fight inward as her character, Ella,...

Aisling Franciosi has done drama and horror, and now, the breakout Irish-Italian star is trying her hand at not one, but two comedies. What else can this indie actress do?
Well, aside from mastering the “addictive” hobby of stop-motion animation for the aptly-titled horror film “Stopmotion,” Franciosi is eyeing a producing debut in the indie film space. It’s all dependent on connecting with the perfect project, something that Franciosi previously found with A24’s “God’s Creatures” which landed her a BIFA nomination alongside co-star Paul Mescal, and Jennifer Kent’s Venice award-winning “The Nightingale,” for which Franciosi was nominated in the Breakthrough Actor category at the Gotham Awards.

English animator Robert Morgan has deservedly accrued a shelf of awards over the past quarter-century or so for shorts like “The Cat With Hands,” “The Separation” and ickily awesome “Bobby Yeah.” Their macabre, surreal nightmares are at once threatening and oddly winsome, with a sinister aesthetic equally redolent of the Brothers Quay, early David Lynch and the painter Francis Bacon — all of whom count among the director’s admitted influences.
He’s been in no hurry to adopt a longer format, and his first feature underlines the wisdom of that reluctance. Not unprecedented among his work in its mix of animated and live-action elements, “Stopmotion” demonstrates the difficulty in stretching such a singular, fantastical sensibility to suit a full-length project’s storytelling requirements.
This “Repulsion”-like tale of a fragile young woman’s descent into madness, starring “The Nightingale’s” Aisling Franciosi, arrests attention with its vivid, escalating eruptions of grotesque imagination.

Stopmotion releases February 23, 2024.
Personally, of all the diverse existing animation styles, stop motion has always been one of the most fascinating. In fact, one of my highest ratings this century belongs to a stop-motion film, Kubo and the Two Strings. If this fact alone would catch my attention, mixing this type of animation with horror, also one of my favorite genres, sets expectations at a clearly higher level. Stopmotion marks the feature debut of filmmaker Robert Morgan, who also co-writes the script with Robin King (Mnemophrenia), and stars Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale).

Stopmotion Interview: Director Robert Morgan on His First Feature, Jan Švankmajer, Sleeping 24 Hours
Robert Morgan is entering his fourth decade as a filmmaker and stop motion animator. In that time, he’s made some fantastically disturbing and multi-award-winning short films, most of them stop motion, and some live action. As someone who loves horror and animation, I’ve been an admirer of Morgan’s for years, and his 2003 short film The Separation stands among my favorites of all time. So I was thrilled to have a chance to speak with him about his debut feature Stopmotion. The film mixes live action and stop motion animation to tell a story about a stop motion animator whose increasingly organic creations begin to invade her reality. As I wrote in my review, “Stopmotion is a formally and narratively thrilling feature debut from one of...

Horror often presents a literal interpretation of artists giving themselves over to their art, whether through supernatural suffering or psychological unraveling. Stopmotion, the feature directorial debut by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker/animator Robert Morgan, chooses the latter. While it may adhere to a familiar path of an artist’s unraveling, Morgan finds inventive and creative ways to mine visceral horror through the uncanny, unsettling nature of stop-motion animation and its painstaking process.

In Robert Morgan’s feature-length debut, Stopmotion, animator Ella Blake (Aisling Fransciosi) vows to finish the work of her ailing mother, Suzanne (Stella Gonet). She shuts herself away from the world in an old apartment building, in total dedication to the painstaking process of moving sculpted figures a centimeter at a time. But she soon begins a new work altogether at the behest of a spooky little neighbor girl, only for the unsettling art they create and Ella’s perception of reality to bleed together. Pity, though, that they don’t bleed together enough, as the macabre dream logic that many of Stopmotion’s sequences employ is too often undermined by plot rhythms familiar from so many horror films about trauma.

Yellow Veil Pictures is kicking off EFM sales on the Shudder Original Film Hell Hole, the latest feature from the Adams Family filmmakers behind Hellbender and Where The Devil Roams.
John Adams and Toby Poser co-directed, co-wrote with Lulu Adams, and star in the feature, which is in post after wrapping production in Serbia.
Hell Hole takes place in Serbia’s Rtanj mountain valley as an American-led fracking crew uncovers a living French soldier frozen in time from a Napoleonic campaign.
When a parasitic monster springs from the soldier’s body it wreaks havoc among the terrified crew looking for a new host to inhabit.

Catalonia’s annual celebration of strange screen tales included a murderous birthmark, weretigers and a therapist overcome with ancient evil
At this year’s International Fantastic film festival of Catalonia, I got bitten all over. Not by vampires or werewolves, alas, but by mosquitoes, which took advantage of the unseasonably hot temperatures on Spain’s Costa del Garraf to transform my body into a throbbing, misshapen mass, rather like William Hurt in Altered States. Still, this helped me feel a kinship with the protagonists of this year’s exercises in body horror, many of them bearing the imprint of Shudder, a streaming service available in the UK, Ireland and Germany but not elsewhere in Europe. But it was one of their titles – Argentinian director Demián Rugna’s When Evil Lurks – that became the first Latin American movie in the festival’s 56-year history to win the Sitges award for best feature film.
