Director Gareth Edwards made a name for himself with 2014’s Godzilla, which laid the foundation for the commercially successful Monsterverse franchise. Edwards tasted further success with 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which received critical acclaim and is widely considered one of the best entries in the franchise since Empire Strikes Back.

However, after directing two franchise movies, Edwards has remained away from blockbuster filmmaking. During an interview, Edwards was asked whether he would be willing to make a return to franchise filmmaking. Edwards left the door open on a potential return to Star Wars but also set up his condition for undertaking another movie in the hit franchise.

There's a new king in town. It may have happened just as the movie is arriving on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD, but "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" has passed a majorly impressive box office milestone. Two and a half months after director Adam Wingard's follow-up to 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" hit theaters, it has officially passed 2017's "Kong: Skull Island" to become the highest-grossing movie in the MonsterVerse franchise.
According to Deadline, "Godzilla x Kong" has now amassed $570 million worldwide, taking it just past the $568.6 million total of "Skull Island." Wingard's second MonsterVerse film has earned $196.3 million domestically to go with $373.7 million internationally. The biggest difference is that "Skull Island" made a whopping $400 million of its total overseas in its day. The only film in the franchise to make more than "GxK" domestically was 2014's "Godzilla" ($200 million domestically/$529 million worldwide) directed by Gareth Edwards. That film kicked...

Fans have long been demanding a sequel to Nicolas Cage’s Face/Off, and while there was indeed a plan for it, somehow it never gets off the ground. Director Adam Wingard, who famously helmed two Godzilla films, even admitted he met with the actor.

Something normal happened at Netflix. “Hit Man,” a well-reviewed film from a top director (Richard Linklater) and a hot star (Glen Powell) in an audience-friendly action title, debuted as #1 on the streamer’s top 10 movie list.
Something very weird happened at the same time. “Godzilla Minus One,” which had a long-delayed appearance in home formats, made it to #1 both at Netflix and on VOD ($5.99 rental) in its first week. By week two, it fell to #6 at Netflix, while dropping from the top spot at iTunes to #7.
Netflix acquired “Hit Man” for $20 million last year when it premiered at Venice and Toronto to great interest. Reviewed (82 Metacritic) at the level or ahead of most of the streamer’s late-year awards-bait films, the action comedy about a moonlighting professor working undercover for New Orleans police has been #1 for the last three days. Unlike most Netflix originals, does it have staying power?

In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Mothra made her surprise return and helped the movie's title characters put their differences aside. The iconic Kaiju perished in Godzilla: King of the Monsters courtesy of the evil King Ghidorah, making the apparent retcon confusing for many fans.
A Mothra egg was discovered shortly after her death, though an explanation for how it was transported into Hollow Earth has never been shared. So, was the Mothra we met a resurrected version of the one that died, the Titan that came out of the egg, or the true original?

In 1954, the first-ever live-action Godzilla movie aired on the screens. Ever since the fictional prehistoric monster has appeared in dozens of outings and has had a cultural impact across generations.
Hollywood carried out its own adaptations of the creature with a set of movies before connecting them into a Marvel-style connected termed the Monsterverse, kick-starting in 2014. While the entertainment aspect of these films never came into question, their status as cinema gems now has taken center stage.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may have received mixed reviews (on Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a disappointing 54% score), but it now sits atop the MonsterVerse as the franchise's most successful movie yet.
Despite being released on Digital platforms last month, the movie rampaged to a mighty $570 million at the global box office this weekend. As a result, it's surpassed Kong: Skull Island as the franchise's most successful entry to date.
With a surprisingly frugal $135 million budget - the lowest in the MonsterVerse's history - there's no denying that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a box office hit. Grossing $196 million domestically and $371.3 million internationally, Warner Bros. and Legendary have netted a tidy profit at a time theaters are struggling due to relatively few hit movies being released.
Here's how each MonsterVerse movie compares in terms of box office revenue:

While many films have been struggling at the box office here in 2024, Legendary’s Monsterverse is showing no signs of slowing down. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the fifth installment in the franchise universe that began with Godzilla 10 years ago, was a massive hit earlier this year, and now it’s officially the Monsterverse’s highest grossing movie of all time.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire just hit $570 million at the worldwide box office over the weekend, $200 million of which was made here in the U.S.!
Here’s how it stacks up against the other four Monsterverse movies…
Godzilla (2014) – $524.9 million Kong: Skull Island (2017) – $568.6 million Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) – $387.3 million Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) – $470.1 million Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) – $570 million
Legendary and Warner Bros. are still all-in on the Monsterverse, for obvious reasons, with an untitled sixth movie already in development and TV show “Monarch” getting a second season.

The so-called "MonsterVerse" is nowadays as silly as the original Toho "Godzilla" sequels became. The franchise's first entry, 2014's divisive but successful "Godzilla," looks downright anomalous. Directed with impeccable scale and craftsmanship by Gareth Edwards, the film exercises careful restraint, escalating the spectacle to make it more satisfying. The palette is made from smog and fire, i.e. what Godzilla and his monster adversaries (the MUTOs) leave in their wake. As star Elizabeth Olsen noted, the film is cut from the cloth of the original 1954 "Godzilla," where the eponymous monster is an allegory for nuclear destruction and natural disasters.
2014's "Godzilla" isn't perfect. It has a so-so script and Aaron Taylor-Johnson feels out of his depth as the lead (even if "The Fall Guy" proved he can be a movie star). Compared to the other MonsterVerse movies, though, it looks like "Jaws."
When Edwards' "Godzilla" went into production, the franchise was in a bad place.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die may have easily taken the top spot at the box office, but there’s a god and a king that may have something louder to say than Mike and Marcus. Per reports, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has officially become the highest-grossing movie in the MonsterVerse, hitting $570 million worldwide more than 10 weeks after first hitting theaters.
The previous champ of the MonsterVerse was 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which, according to The Numbers, topped out at $561 million (although Deadline reports it at $568.6 million). The 2014 Godzilla holds at $529 million, while 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters were nowhere near the half billion dollar mark, with the latter having the franchise-low of $383 million.
Godzilla x Kong opened with $80 million domestically, which, while not hitting the mark set by 2014’s Godzilla, was enough to open at #1, a spot it held for its second week as well.

The 2014 Godzilla holds at $529 million, while 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters were nowhere near the half billion dollar mark, with the latter having the franchise-low of $383 million.

In a global box office that’s still licking its wounds from the strike, here’s something to scream about: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the highest grossing movie in the Legendary and Warner Bros Monsterverse franchise at $570M around the world.
That beats previous Monsterverse champ 2017’s Kong Skull Island which stomped to $568.6M. Broken out New Empire‘s grosses are $373.7M abroad and $196.3M domestic. Overall, New Empire is the highest grossing Monsterverse title in 35 markets including Brazil, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Mexico and UAE.
Props here to Warner Bros marketing, but also the global distribution team. Realize this: Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was originally on Easter weekend. Then the Culver City lot moved that movie up to March 22. This created a golden opportunity for Warners to step in and take over holy weekend, which has historically been a rich launchpad for the studio with Clash of the Titans,...

This post contains spoilers for "Godzilla Minus One."
When "Godzilla Minus One" hit theaters late last year, it was a fierce reminder that visual effects can actually be amazing. These days, conversations about CGI mostly gravitate towards its continual overuse, the shoddiness of some digital effects work in recent blockbusters, and the reportedly relentless workload impacting exhausted effects artists. Yet, Toho Studios' latest kaiju flick is a minor cinematic miracle, a low-budget movie that doesn't overuse CGI while still managing to show off its central beastie plenty of times. For its achievements, the movie was awarded the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, the first the "Godzilla" franchise has earned in its 70 year history.
Surprisingly, despite the accolades the film received for its visuals, "Godzilla Minus One" doesn't actually utilize that much digital art compared to most of its contemporaries. In a Variety spotlight piece earlier this year, the film's director,...

Despite a copious amount of violence, multiple deaths, and slimy, goopy scenes wherein little monsters get blended, torched, melted, and otherwise horribly mutilated, Joe Dante's Frank Capra spoof "Gremlins" was released on June 8, 1984, with a PG rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. Producer Steven Spielberg recognized that "Gremlins," in being so tonally whimsical, wasn't quite raw enough to warrant an R-rating, yet also realized that it might be a little too terrifying for the kids who were allowed to see PG-rated movies. Spielberg suggested to the MPAA that it introduce a PG-13 rating to cover films like "Gremlins." It should also be noted that, in 1984, a PG rating was similarly given to Spielberg's violent adventure film "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," so it was high time a stop-gap be included.
The PG-13 rating was introduced on July 1, less than a month after "Gremlins" opened. Weirdly,...

One of the most storied franchises in contemporary pop culture, Japan’s “Ultra Series” has generated 44 movies, nearly 100 video games, countless pages of manga, and an endless parade of TV shows since Tsuburaya Productions first created the character in 1966 as a kid-friendly way of capitalizing on the success of kaiju phenomena like “Godzilla.” With such an illustrious legacy to its name, it might come as a surprise that Shannon Tindle’s “Ultraman: Rising” — an animated feature set in Tokyo but created entirely in the West — doesn’t require its preteen audience to know any of that, nor does it bother to fill them in along the way.

We recently got confirmation that a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is officially in the works, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
There was no mention of a potential director at the time, but we'd later learn that Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and previous MonsterVerse movie Godzilla vs. Kong, would no longer direct the project after initially being attached to return. His departure was described as "amicable and stemming from timing issues," with the door remaining "open for a future return."
Now, THR (via SFFGazette.com) the next instalment in the popular franchise has enlisted a new director, with Grant Sputore set to take the helm.
Sputore doesn't have much experience, having come from the world of commercials, but he does have one feature under his belt: The 2019 sci-fi movie I Am Mother starring Hilary Swank.

When Adam Wingard said he would not return for the follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, fans of Legendary‘s latest clash of the titans fell into despair. Wingard brought something special to Godzilla and Kong’s latest city-destroying brawl, and we hoped he’d remain a part of the franchise. Thankfully, Grant Sputore, the director of Hilary Swank’s sci-fi thriller I Am Mother, is stepping up to the plate.
The follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire should continue the story from Wingard’s latest blockbuster, focusing on Kong and Godzilla’s tag team antics alongside several Titans waiting in the wings. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writer Dave Callaham will pen the script.
While Sputore is in, Wingard is moving on to direct Onslaught for A24. Wingard directed 2022’s Godzilla vs. Kong and this year’s Godzilla x Kong: New Empire.

A sixth installment in Legendary’s 10-years-strong Monsterverse is in the works, and The Hollywood Reporter lets us know that Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) will direct the movie.

Adam Wingard, meanwhile, is returning to his roots with Onslaught, an action-thriller for A24 that’s said to be more in the vein of his earlier movies You’re Next and The Guest.

Akira Kurosawa’s classic epic “Seven Samurai” is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a 4K restoration and theatrical re-release.
“Seven Samurai” centers on 16th-century Japanese warriors who protect their village from invaders. Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura lead the three-hour feature hailing from legendary auteur Kurosawa. “Seven Samurai” was his third film following “Rashomon” and “Ikiru.” “Seven Samurai” famously debuted at the 1954 Venice Film Festival, where Kurosawa won the Silver Lion for Best Director.
The 70th anniversary 4K restoration was made possible by Toho Co. Ltd, which released the original film. The restored film debuted at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival; the festival further honored Kurosawa’s contributions to cinema by incorporating a still of “Rhapsody in August” in the official Cannes poster.
The restoration of “Seven Samurai” will be released in the U.S. by Janus Films. Deadline debuted the trailer.

Mechagodzilla is undoubtedly one of the coolest aspects of the MonsterVerse. At the start of every episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants," Painty the Pirate appears to start the theme song. After his now iconic "Are YA Ready, Kids?!" warm-up, the show cuts to the image of a small island in the middle of the sea, before shifting down into the animated world of our titular, porous hero. The island is Bikini Atoll, a small part of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific island chain that became a bargaining chip between countries throughout the early 20th century. After World War II, the United States captured the land and forced out some 40 families residing on the island with promises of a return that became impossible. The area was instead turned into a nuclear weapons test site and, in the weirdest ways imaginable, became embedded in pop culture.

Starting today, Godzilla Minus One is now available to stream on Netflix and digital platforms in the United States! This highly-anticipated release gives American audiences a chance to witness the phenomenal storytelling that has captivated international viewers since its initial launch. What Sets Godzilla Minus One Apart The film takes place in the aftermath of World War II, presenting a fresh perspective on the iconic monster. Set in 1945, Japan is already reeling from the war’s devastation when faced with a new crisis: Godzilla. Lead character Kōichi Shikishima, portrayed by Ryunosuke Kamiki, embodies a contrite kamikaze pilot turned reluctant hero.

The easiest way to make two rivals team up? Pit them up against an adversary who they can only defeat by working together. It's a tried and true storytelling formula and 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" is no different; after all, if you make the final battle actually be Godzilla vs. Kong, then there has to be a winner. If Kong triumphs, you alienate the Godzilla fans. If Godzilla wins, the Kong-heads will bow out. If it's a tie, you satisfy no-one. Much easier to make a crowd pleaser where these two monster movie icons team up (there's a reason the sequel "Godzilla x Kong" looked to buddy cop movie "Lethal Weapon" for influence). That way, both sets of fans can cheer as they wail on a common foe.

Filmmaker Takahashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One may have won an Oscar for its VFX, but it’s the storytelling that Hollywood needs to learn from, Ryan writes.
You can tell that Godzilla Minus One is the work of a brilliant storyteller right from its opening scene. It’s World War II, and a lone Mitsubishi fighter plane flies over choppy waters towards an airfield on a lush, remote Japanese island. We then get a tighter shot of the aircraft as it touches down on a rutted landing strip: wheels kicking up dust, the bomb stowed beneath the plane hangs perilously close to the ground.
The viewer may not even consciously notice it, but this shot speaks volumes about kamikaze pilot Kōichi (Ryunosuke Kamiki), who we see for the first time in the next shot. First, that he’s landed without dumping his payload on the enemy; and second, even...

"Godzilla Minus One" is part of a new golden age of Godzilla, a movie that defied all expectations and made history at both the box office and also the Oscars. It's easy to see why. This is a film with fantastic visual effects that rival any Hollywood blockbuster, stunning Godzilla action, and a version of the king of the monsters that makes him terrifying again -- a force of nature, a monstrous allegory for nuclear armageddon.
The film also does something rare for a "Godzilla movie" and actually gives us compelling human characters that are as easy to root for and care about as the titular giant monster. This is particularly important because for once, the most impactful moments in the film revolve not around Godzilla, but the humans. Take Godzilla's attack on Ginza, the first time we see his devastating atomic blast. What is normally a moment of awe...

This post contains spoilers for "Godzilla Minus One."
Whether you watch them or not, dubbed movies are a part of life. International dubs are more accessible for viewers with dyslexia, vision problems, or processing disorders, and they're a great early entry point for young kids experiencing world cinema for the first time. They're useful for all sorts of reasons, and the best of them feature strong performances that add additional layers to already-compelling stories. So, when a good movie gets a bad dub, it should be everyone's problem, and that seems to be the case for one of the best films of 2023: "Godzilla Minus One."
The latest Godzilla film from Toho Studios made a kaiju-sized impact when it debuted in theaters last December, earning an impressive $115 million worldwide against a super-lean budget and becoming the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla movie ever made. The movie also became the first in the franchise to win an Oscar,...

When Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg first showed up on our screens back in the day, he earned a lot of fans through the fact that he was a celebrity-on-the-rise who had “geeky” interests and embraced “geek culture.” There’s a quote from him bouncing around where he said, “Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.” He even titled his memoir Nerd Do Well… But last year, he distanced himself from his past self, writing off nostalgia as a neurological disorder and telling The Guardian, “I’ve aged out of a lot of what people assume I’m about.

2023 saw quite a few masterpieces (even though the box office disasters were more), and Godzilla Minus One was one of them.
Besides the tremendous critical praise it has earned from global audiences and critics, the movie seems to have gotten on the good side of quite a few celebrities in Hollywood as well. One of these is the Star Trek actor, Simon Pegg.

However, as compared to other notable reviewers, Pegg seemed to have a mixed opinion on the movie and the MonsterVerse.
This is because, on the one hand, while he greatly acknowledged the gem of a work that the film was, bringing about a new take on the Kaiju and its relationship with humans, he simultaneously also hinted that the MonsterVerse is “f—ing cultural appropriation.”

Adam Wingard brought new life into the Monsterverse with his two films Godzilla Vs Kong and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. His films followed up on what was laid down in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Wingard brought back the fun and scale of a Kaiju film with the large-scale battle between Godzilla and Kong in his first film and expanded the world further with The New Empire.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire saw the introduction of new monsters like The Skar King and Shimo. Additionally, audiences were surprised by the return of Mothra in the film. The audiences assumed it was the same Mothra from King of the Monsters, Wingard refuted that by adding an interesting lore to the fan-favorite creature.
