Initially gaining notoriety as High Grant’s girlfriend, Hurley soon found herself in the spotlight with movies like Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) and Bedazzled (2000). She was also seen in TV shows like Gossip Girl and The Royals.

Australian comedian Barry Humphries, best known for his comedic character Dame Edna Everage, has died at age 89, his family has confirmed.
The veteran entertainer had been unwell in a Sydney hospital, suffering complications following hip surgery last month.
Humphries’ most celebrated creation Dame Edna became a star in the 1970s in the UK, getting her own chat show on ITV a decade later. She was known for her quick wit, smiling-assassin putdowns to even the most lauded guest, and for throwing gladioli out among the audience.
Humphries had been inspired to create the character after watching his mother and other suburban housewives as a child in his native Australia. He was born in Melbourne, and moved to the UK in 1959, where he appeared on the West End stage.
Other characters created by Humphries included drunken diplomat Sir Les Patterson and the always grumbling Sandy Stone.

The cause of Raquel Welch’s death on Feb. 15 was cardiac arrest, with Alzheimer’s disease a possible underlying factor.
The cause of death was disclosed in a death certificate filed yesterday with the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health and obtained by TMZ.

Like most people, I have a great reverence for Brendan Fraser. I have no qualms admitting "Encino Man" is one of my earliest comfort films, as is "Airheads," and I'm a staunch defender of his performance in Henry Selick's "Monkeybone." Yes, I too would also "honk if I'd rather be watching the 1999 cinematic masterpiece 'The Mummy' starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz," upon seeing the viral SuperYaki bumper sticker in the wild, but I can also sing the dolphin song from "Bedazzled" by heart. Brendan Fraser is a performer I have loved for so long I cannot remember when he wasn't one of my favorite actors. Knowing that this multi-faceted performer has won the Oscar for Best Actor feels like something worth celebrating with the same intensity as watching the underdog team win the Super Bowl, but Fraser's win comes wrapped in the violent, grotesque embrace of Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale.

Brendan Fraser’s massive popularity has helped play a role in the revitalization of the 54-year-old actor’s career. That includes Fraser’s first-ever Oscar nomination for best actor, via his towering performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale.”
For this week’s video episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we sat down with Brendan Fraser to discuss “The Brenaissance” and what this past year has meant to him. We also play a game called “Whose Babe Is It Anyway?” — where Fraser guesses which of his former co-stars said a particular line.
Watch the full video above. The podcast, including an interview with Oscar-nominated “Tár” star Cate Blanchett, will be released on Friday.
“The Whale” is a stark, dour examination of regret and addiction, wrapped into the script written by Samuel D. Hunter, who adapted his play of the same name. Distributed by A24, “The Whale” tells the story of Charlie,...

It's not a secret that Hollywood has a really sordid history with the way transgender characters have been presented on film. While bigoted pundits like to pretend that trans people and trans representation in entertainment is somehow a new concept, films like "Myra Breckinridge" were shocking and subverting audience expectations over half a century ago. Unlike the transgender media of our current era that often put cis men like Jared Leto, Eddie Redmayne, and Jeffrey Tambor in drag, "Myra Breckinridge" instead chose to cast Raquel Welch, an international sex symbol at the time, in the titular role.
The film was an adaptation of Gore Vidal's controversial book of the same name, a title that was equal parts bestseller and banned text. Raquel Welch, the almond-eyed sex symbol who turned a doeskin bikini into one of the most iconic cinematic images of the 1960s, has died. She was 82.
Welch’s management company told The Hollywood Reporter that she died Wednesday morning following a brief illness. Her son, Damon Welch, confirmed that she died Wednesday at her home in Los Angeles.
Her success in Hollywood was due partly to talent, partly to perseverance, but mostly to hitting the genetic jackpot. Although she turned in several respectable performances — as a scientist’s assistant in Fantastic Voyage (1966), as Lilian Lust in Bedazzled (1967), as a transgender revolutionary in Myra Breckinridge (1970) — it was her strikingly photogenic features and voluptuous figure that catapulted her to international stardom.
“The indelible image of a woman as queen of nature,” is how cultural critic Camille Paglia once described Welch’s onscreen appeal. The actress herself put it more succinctly. “I became,...

Welcome to the Brenaissance -- or Brendanaissance, whatever you want to call it!
Brendan Fraser is enjoying a long-overdue comeback thanks to his gut-wrenching performance in The Whale.
Though he's most famous for goofy roles and being beautiful in 1990s rom-coms, Fraser has an exceptional range that often gets overlooked, particularly as he has matured and taken on a wider variety of roles in diverse projects.
Fraser has starred alongside some cinematic heavy hitters and taken all sorts of risks -- indie films, big-budget studio flicks, and television -- he's done it all.
Here are some examples of his best work, including some of his biggest hits and some underrated gems.
The Mummy (1999)
Fraser channels Errol Flynn and Indiana Jones as Rick O'Connell in The Mummy, his most commercially successful and enduring hit.

Brendan Fraser has been getting a lot of talk lately for his performance in The Whale, considered to be his comeback film after a long line of box-office disappointments. But, for a while back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Fraser was one of the hottest actors in Hollywood. One of the films he made during that period was Bedazzled, a remake of a ’60s comedy; while it wasn’t a big hit at the time, it’s taken on a new life as a cult classic. In the film, he tries to win the heart of a woman with a little help from the devil, who grants him several wishes that, of course, aren’t quite what they seem. The object of his affections in the film was played by Frances O’Connor and, when they made the film, Fraser said he was amazed by what a versatile actor O’Connor was.

There was a time when it seemed like you could set your watch to a new Brendan Fraser hit movie coming out every couple of years. But after a great run in the 1990s, the star of "George of the Jungle" and "The Mummy" had a curious box office disaster appear out of nowhere.
Heading into the new millennium, Fraser had just wrapped the action spectacular "The Mummy" which grossed more than 155 million, and the supernatural romantic comedy "Bedazzled" which raked in more than 90 million worldwide. And just when it looked like anything he touched would turn to box office gold, "Monkeybone" happened.
Twentieth Century Fox shelled out 75 million and teamed Fraser with "The Nightmare Before Christmas" director Henry Selick for a strange dark comedy that blended animation and live action. Brendan Fraser and Adam Sandler first jammed together in the 1994 comedy “Airheads,” playing two members of a band so desperate to make it big that they hijack a radio station. The musically inept Lone Rangers — Steve Buscemi was the bassist — would soon be in high demand in Hollywood, but Sandler reveals in our conversation that he had to fight to get Fraser cast as singer Chazz Darby.
Back then, Fraser was best known for playing an unfrozen caveman in “Encino Man,” opposite Pauly Shore. And he credits taking a risk on hosting NBC’s “SNL” for his career longevity. He certainly has had a good run — more than 100 TV and film credits over a span of 43 years to date.
In an interview published Friday by Et Online, Lowe credited that career streak to a force of will that led him to take risks that paid off. One of those risks was the hosting job on “Saturday Night Live,” a gig he said several people close to him advised him not to take.
“If you want to do it a long time, be prepared to be brave and say yes to things that maybe other people in your life are going to be worried about,” Lowe, 58, advised to up-and-coming actors...

Brendan Fraser fought armies of the undead in “The Mummy.” He swung from vines in “George of the Jungle.” He traveled around the world with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in “Looney Toons: Back in Action.” He made a pact with Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil in “Bedazzled.” He partied with Pauly Shore as a reanimated Neanderthal in “Encino Man.” He even took a shower with Matt Damon in “School Ties.” And while those movies brought him fame, fortune and respect in Hollywood, rocketing Fraser to the top of the A-list in the 1990s and early aughts, they didn’t usually scream “Oscar-worthy.” He was always invited to the party, of course, but as a presenter, not a nominee.
“I give really good podium,” Fraser says. “I’m great at handing out awards. It’s easy. The pressure is off. You’re up on the stage, staring out at all...

Although he had a few roles under his belt already, Brendan Fraser became a massive movie star in 1999 thanks to "The Mummy." The film launched him to superstardom — Fraser portrayed a tough goofball with a glorious mop of hair, a chiseled jaw and had a terrific sense of humor. Plus, he was a genuinely compelling performer. The actor continued to work steadily, but the charm of "The Mummy" was hard to match again.
A few years later, the actor disappeared from the limelight; he had to put his career on pause due to a series of issues. Among other things, Fraser had to undergo several surgeries due to performing stunts and couldn't work at full pace again (discussed in more detail below).
The beloved actor has finally made his big comeback in filmmaker Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale," and Fraser's performance has received glowing reviews from critics. "The Mummy" franchise did,...

Actress Elizabeth Hurley ‘always’ schedules a mammogram around her birthday as she continues to urge women to get themselves checked for breast cancer. The 57-year-old actress had worked with late Evelyn Lauder – who was the daughter-in-law of cosmetics businesswoman Esee Lauder- on health campaigns for more than two decades when she succumbed to breast cancer back in 2011 and is reminded to “think” about getting a checkup on her own breasts around the month of June, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
She said: “She made me promise to have regular mammograms after that, and to always think of them in June, my birth month, which I do. Evelyn preached self-detection for those too young for mammograms. She always said that women have to be taught at puberty, ideally by a doctor, to check their own breasts “every month, religiously.”
The ‘Bedazzled’ star went on to explain that she feels most proud when...

Despite writing one of the most rugged and enduring novels in all English literature before her 30th — and final — birthday, Emily Brontë spent the whole of her life in a suffocating environment that saw her brilliant imagination dampened at every turn. It was dampened by the patriarchy scared of her talent (“Wuthering Heights” was of course published under a pseudonym), by the individual men who knew her personally, and even sometimes by her own sisters, two of whom survived childhood to become accomplished writers themselves. Vindicating as it might be that Brontë’s one great book is still read widely some 200 years later, her remarkable victory over death pales in comparison to the poetic irony of her legacy: Few authors of any age have ever so inflamed public imagination by the mere fact of their existence.
In that light, it’s easy to appreciate why Brontë’s life so naturally...

If you were a person attracted to men born between the years 1980 and 2000, there is a very large chance that your sexual awakening came courtesy of Brendan Fraser. The actor, who got his start in the early 1990s boarding school drama School Ties, originated a certain type of wide-eyed, washboard-abbed himbo in the late 90s and early 2000s, appearing in such iconic films as Encino Man, George of the Jungle, Bedazzled, and The Mummy franchise.

In a time where the Internet has not been able to agree on anything, one thing has seemingly united everyone: Brendan Fraser. At the end of the 20th Century, Fraser was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, where he was able to match his matinee idol looks with a light-hearted, goofy persona that endeared him to millions most notably in "The Mummy" films. Once the 2000s rolled around, Fraser was on quite a losing streak. You had Harold Ramis' remake of "Bedazzled," the reviled Best Picture winner "Crash," the underrated but underperforming "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," and the grisly one-two punch of "Extraordinary Measures" and "Furry Vengeance" in 2010 basically cementing his time as a Hollywood leading man as over.
