We may have had to wait two years for the third season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” to hit our screens but, boy, was it worth it. Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

Can television have its own New Hollywood moment?
Much like movies such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, Rosemary’s Baby and Easy Rider took the late 1960s by storm, a group of writers and directors are hoping that their own independent TV projects can break through and find their way to the small screen amidst the current Hollywood contraction.
After a number of web series such as Issa Rae’s The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, Broad City and High Maintenance were turned into TV series over the past decade, writers and directors hoped that this would lead to more.
However, the rise of streaming originals saw the business go the other way, with incredibly expensive dramas and comedies, often led by movie stars, taking over. This trend is now waning and a new generation of creators hopes that cost-conscious companies will now pay more attention to their projects instead.

Issa Rae‘s new company wants to hook up creators and brands for “deeper relationships” beyond the usual influencer-sponsor connection.
Ensemble has already built a network of 50 creators including Drew Afualo, Leo González, and Mark Phillips, and is working with brands including Pepsi, Chili’s, and Popeyes.
Per Business Insider, Ensemble is founded by Rae but is meant to be separate from her public persona as a much-lauded writer, actress, and producer. The company is led by a group of advertising vets–Ian Schafer as cofounder and president, Matt Berger as head of revenue, and Keith Lee as head of revenue operations.
Montrel McKay, the president of development and production at Rae’s studio Hoorae, told Bi the pitch for Ensemble is that it works closely with creators to help them package their content for brands.

Instead, she blamed Rae for not “protecting” her when it came to behind-the-scenes conflicts. “There’s a whole narrative that is completely false that people keep spinning. They keep saying, you know, that I’m this mean girl on this set, that I harmed these people on this set,” Seales said, per Decider. “I just want to point out something very basic. How can I be a mean girl on a set that ain’t my set? How?” she continued. “It’s your show.

The second novel by the Ghanaian-American author is told from the perspective of Gifty, a neuroscientist in training studying the behavior patterns in mice as it relates to depression and addiction. Bouncing back and forth between her present-day life in the Bay Area and her childhood as a first-generation Ghanaian growing up in rural Alabama, Gifty is on both a methodical and a spiritual journey to make sense of the suffering she’s seen all around her. But even as she turns to the hard sciences to unlock the mystery of her family’s loss, she still finds herself hungering for facets of her childhood faith and grappling with the evangelical church in which she was raised, whose promise of salvation remains as tantalizing as it is elusive.

“Reservation Dogs” took the industry by storm. Critics and audiences alike fell in love with this FX comedy from Sterlin Harjo and Oscar-winner Taika Waititi. The series follows the lives of four Indigenous teenagers living in rural Oklahoma who try to scrape together enough money to leave behind their reservation community.

Maureen Ryan (Vanity Fair) observed: “It was astonishing to watch Jacobs’s body language and face in the recent episode in which Elora met her father, Rick (Ethan Hawke). ColorCreative’s Find Your People Program is introducing more people – this time, composers.
The talent development initiative from the company founded by Issa Rae, Deniese Davis and Talitha Watkins is unique in that it isn’t only targeted to emerging creatives in above-the-line roles. Instead, it solicits applicants from seven disciplines – directors, producers, cinematographers, production designers, costume designers, editors and now composers – to form four separate production crews, with one representative from a field on each project.
Each team works together to pitch a greenlight committee and will receive funding from program partner Canva, whose visual communication platform is used throughout Fypp’s yearlong curriculum-based training workshops.
“It’s been a privilege to support the Find Your People Program, and we’re delighted to be back for a second year,” Canva global head of consumer marketing Kristine Segrist said in a statement. “There is incredible value alignment between our brands...

For this last hurrah, Gerwig swapped the pink boiler suit she famously wore while directing the $1.4 billion blockbuster (and the stunning Gucci gown she wore at the ceremony) for a black open tuxedo jacket, skipping a shirt in favor of draping Boucheron diamonds on her neck and chest.
Shortly after the “Barbie” song ended, the director was ready to take a load off, making her way to an open seat on the outdoor courtyard, because it had been a long day...

Take a look at more footage from the Oscar-winning satirical comedy drama "American Fiction", written, directed by Cord Jefferson based on the 2001 novel "Erasure" by Percival Everett, starring Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, and Sterling K. Brown:
"...in a film about the consequences of turning one's art into a simple commodity, 'Monk Ellison', a professor of English literature, is in a rut with his own writing. His agent repeatedly explains to him that publishing houses don't believe his writing to be 'black enough', while another book from author 'Juanita Mae Jenkins', titled 'We's Lives In Da Ghetto' is a national best seller and critical darling..."

Wes Anderson has won an Academy Award for the live-action short, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, marking the very first time the acclaimed director has actually won an Oscar.
In the past, Anderson has been nominated for seven Oscars — first with 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums — but has never won. Some of his films have received Hollywood’s highest accolade, like when Grand Budapest Hotel took home four awards at the 2015 Oscars, but in those cases, even though Anderson’s films won awards, the director himself was not involved in the award.
Now, with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, though, Anderson is a proper Academy Award-winner. He was not at the ceremony itself, but the award was accepted on his behalf by presenters Issa Rae and Ramy Youssef.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar premiered last September, and is based on the 1977 short-story-of-the-same-name by Roald Dahl. With a runtime of only 37 minutes,...

With Barbie being among the top nominated films at the Oscars, everyone was betting that the red carpet fashion would be awash with Barbiecore pink.
Alas, most of the blockbuster film’s nominees swapped the rose hue for black. Barbie star and co-producer Margot Robbie arrived on the red carpet in Versace channeling a minimalist version of Barbie’s 1960 Solo in the Spotlight ensemble. Stylist Andrew Mukamal finished her look with gold and diamond jewelry by Fred Leighton.
“I think people have a pink hangover, but I wish there was more pink,” Simu Liu told ABC7 Los Angeles’ George Pennacchio on the red carpet.
Liu (in Fendi), best supporting actor nominee Ryan Gosling (in custom Gucci) and Kate McKinnon are also wearing head-to-toe black. Best supporting actress nominee America Ferrera (styled by Karla Welch) stepped out in a shimmering pink Versace chainmail dress. Director Greta Gerwig (nominated for best adapted...
