The history of television is fascinating because you can trace lines between almost any modern show and one of the classics, as crews move from one show to another, bringing their past work and their influences with them. This applies to both live-action and animation. In the latter, many animators who start as writers or storyboard artists in one show end up creating their own series years later, bringing colleagues along with them, who then go on to create their own shows in return. Take "Dexter's Laboratory" launching the career of not just Genndy Tartakovsky, but also Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, Butch Hartman, and Seth MacFarlane, each going on to make a popular show.
What "Dexter's Laboratory" did in the '90s, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" did in the late 2000s. This is a show that helped launch several animation careers, with plenty of writers and storyboard artists...

It's difficult to encapsulate the impact of Pendelton Ward's animated juggernaut, "Adventure Time." Not only did the show serve as the launchpad for animators like Rebecca Sugar ("Steven Universe") and Julia Pott ("Summer Camp Island"), but it even served as the structural godfather for Donald Glover's "Atlanta." The series centers on a human boy named Finn and his adoptive brother Jake, a magical dog who can change size at will. The duo goes on magical adventures in very distant lands, meeting new friends, foes, and fascinating characters along the way. The nearly 300-episode series took home seven Emmys, launched a multimedia franchise, and got multiple spin-offs. It was a show that felt like it would go on forever ... until after 10 seasons, it came to a satisfying albeit bittersweet end.

Tom Kenny has been delighting children for decades as America's favorite undersea fry cook, SpongeBob SquarePants. It's an iconic character that has become a pop culture institution, but many fans may not know that Kenny himself is a beloved voice actor beyond his pineapple under the sea. The East Syracuse native has provided voices for well over 500 films, television shows, and video games; from major protagonists to wacky sidekicks to merely additional voices, Kenny has done it all.
Because his role as SpongeBob is so ubiquitous, animation enthusiasts can often spot his stylings from a mile away. Let's face it, there's just nobody who does a fun, nasally character voice like Kenny. However, the man has multitudes. He can be an authoritative narrator in one moment, then a goofy geezer in the next. He even has a few characters where his voice is near-unrecognizable, highlighting the lengths Kenny can go...

When it comes to changes in the television landscape, 2022 has been rough. Almost every streaming service or major cable network seemed to have some kind of major loss or merger. The result was a whole lot of cost-cutting, which unfortunately meant that some beloved shows got the axe, many before their time. The CW ended many of its superhero shows as the network goes through a total re-brand, Warner Bros. Discovery's merger led them to cut hundreds of millions of dollars worth of content, and Netflix lost 50 billion in value overnight back in January, leading to a year of heavy cancellations. It seemed like every time we turned around, something else was getting cut, and it's been devastating for fans.
Some of the shows we lost only had a single, audacious season before getting cut short, while others have been around for years. Some, like the divisive and ridiculously expensive "Westworld,...

JoJo Siwa hosted the Creative Arts ceremony on Night 1 and Jack McBrayer took over hosting duties on Night 2 with the rest of the categories.
On Night 1, it was Maya and the Three, Sneakerella and The Quest that took the most accolades with three trophies each.
Some of the first night’s highlights included a special performance by Xomg Pop!, the all-girl group created by Jess and Siwa. There was also an appearance from Martin P. Robinson, the legendary puppeteer who has been with Sesame Street since 1980, providing voices and puppeteering for Mr. Snuffleupagus, Telly Monster, Slimey the Worm, Martians and more. Out of all the holiday-themed horror movies that have piled up under the proverbial tree over the decades, there's a strong case to be made that Michael Dougherty's "Krampus" stands as the truest to the Christmas spirit. Released in 2015, the film has dug a cozy little niche for itself as an annual tradition for those looking for something a bit more twisted in their yuletide cheer.
Although the title monster does rear his horned head, Krampus — like Santa Claus — depends on his helpers to carry out his night's work. In this case, that means a horde of evil elves, a posse of demonic toys, and a trio of killer gingerbread men, the last of which emit tiny grunts of sadistic glee, voiced by some very fitting guest stars.
"Krampus" is ostensibly a horror-comedy, but it's one of the rare modern films in that subgenre in which the laughs don't drown out the screams.

Voice actors are some of the most underappreciated performers in show business. They're all over our media and they have a very unique skill set, yet they rarely get the recognition or the compensation that they deserve. With a few exceptions, most voice actors never become household names, even if their work is extremely prolific. Justin Roiland, the voice behind both Rick and Morty on "Rick and Morty," is one of the most prominent voice actors around, even if he admits his actual range is somewhat limited.
Roiland, who also writes and executive produces "Rick and Morty," has been around the block a few times when it comes to voice-over acting. He's lent his talents from family-friendly shows like "Gravity Falls" to late-night adult animation like "Aqua Teen Hunger Force." One of his funniest roles, however, was as The Earl of Lemongrab on "Adventure Time."

The Netflix adult animated series “Bad Crimes,” backed by comedy legends Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, has been quietly canceled at the streamer in the middle of production, marking the latest in a string of animated series being unceremoniously scrapped at Netflix (among them: an anticipated adaptation of beloved comic “Bone” and Ava DuVernay’s “Wings of Fire”).
Announced earlier this year, “Bad Crimes” hailed from Nicole Silverberg, a veteran of “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” and was set to star Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus as a pair of FBI agents who travel across the country solving murders. Judge and Daniels were executive producing with Dustin Davis under their Bandera Entertainment banner. Erica Hayes (Netflix’s “Big Mouth”) was also executive producing alongside Byer and Lapkus.

Animation luminary Fred Seibert’s FredFilms will team up with Chinese content production firm DeZerlin Entertainment for an incubator projected called “Hot Pot! Cartoons,” which hopes to bring emerging Chinese talent and content out to the global market.
In the project, FredFilms’ U.S.-based development and production team and Qingdao-headquartered DeZerlin will supervise up-and-coming Chinese creators to develop animated shorts for global distribution.

When “Adventure Time” wrapped its tenth season in 2018, the show ended with a brilliant masterstroke of ambiguity, by acknowledging that everybody dies without dwelling on it. You can’t get much more on-brand than that: Over the course of a decade, human Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his pliable talking dog pal Jake (Joe Maggio) became the centerpiece of a vibrant animated post-apocalyptic backdrop, which used the zany irreverence of its “children’s cartoon” formula to address darker and more sophisticated themes. The final scene suggested that the stories of Finn and Jake will continue to inspire good vibes long after shuffle off the mortal coil that is the Land of Ooo.
At its core, the bond between these two buddies — as Jake matured from adolescence to young adulthood — became credible enough to generate real emotion and intelligence around even the most outrageous of circumstances, and it bled into the rest...

Finn the Human (Jeremy Shada) and Jake the Dog (John Dimaggio) are back together! That is, if Finn can find his trusty stretchy shape-shifting dog pal in territory both familiar and uncharted. Set after the 2018 Adventure Time finale “Come Along with Me,” this is the first Distant Lands post-series special to shine the spotlight on our beloved adventurous boy-and-dog duo. Photo: 'Adventure Time'/HBO Max It was two years ago on September 3, 2018, that Adventure Time aired its final episodes on Cartoon Network. Since it first debuted in 2010, the show would go on to become one of the most popular and influential shows not just on the network but for TV cartoons in general. And despite being aimed at children, over the course of eight years, ten seasons, and 283 episodes it has garnered a huge and devoted adult fanbase thanks to its imaginative visuals, offbeat sense of humor, and genuine depth. The show’s premise is quite simple: set in the post-apocalyptic and magical Land of Ooo, we follow a young human boy named Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his shape-shifting dog, best friend, and adoptive brother Jake (John Dimaggio) as they roam the land in search of adventure, rescue princesses, and just be as helpful as possible to their friends, neighbors and other inhabitants of Ooo.

The past several months indoors have left me not only with a need for quality streaming content but also a desire to be reminded of what it truly means to be human. Luckily for me, Netflix's The Midnight Gospel, created by comedian Duncan Trussell and Adventure Time's Pendleton Ward, accomplishes both in an original, visually exciting way, making it a series that, in my opinion, everybody absolutely must watch.
The animated show follows Clancy Gilroy (voiced by Trussell) as he travels to a series of dying worlds, interviewing different creatures along the way for his "spacecast" (his universe's version of a podcast), using his malfunctioning multiverse simulator. The show combines real conversations from Trussell's podcast The Duncan Trussell Family Hour with trippy visuals, making it both relatable and surreal at the same time.

“Adventure Time” often seemed too good for this world. Over eight years and 10 seasons, Pendleton Ward’s cartoon odyssey was a colorful and quirky celebration of friendship that doubled as post-apocalyptic fantasy. Early on, the show oscillated from silly gags to poignant observations and back again, all while expanding on a rich and expansive mythology with boundless possibilities (at least until Cartoon Network pulled the plug). The extensive 2018 finale put a definitive end point on the exploits of human Jake and his shapeshifting talking dog pal Jake, but “Adventure Time” was always about waking up to a world much larger and sophisticated than any one person can discern. Finn and Jake were just two pieces in a much larger cosmic puzzle.

This Adventure Time: Distant Lands review contains spoilers.
Adventure Time’s ending had a poignant, satisfying sense of finality to it while at the same time implying there were many more unseen adventures yet untold. With such a great finale, there are certainly ways Adventure Time could be brought back that would feel disappointing. In fact, there are already ongoing Adventure Time comics that explore the further tales of Finn and Jake’s post-show escapades. I tried to get into them, but the magic and fun of the TV show just doesn’t translate well to the page and, yeah, there is something a bit lame about the series’ ending being undercut by the characters just going on some more adventures afterwards.

With his Netflix animated series The Midnight Gospel, comedian Duncan Trussell embraced a novel technique and challenge, juxtaposing fantastic interstellar adventures with audio from a series of podcast interviews.
A collaboration between Trussell and Adventure Time’s Pendleton Ward, the adult animated series centers on Clancy, a spacecaster (or video podcaster in space) living in a dimension known as “The Chromatic Ribbon,” who uses his multiverse simulator to travel to dying worlds.
Framed on pre-recorded interviews with comedians, spiritual teachers and other guests of The Duncan Trussell Family Hour, including Joey Diaz, Trudy Goodman and Dr. Drew, each episode features conversations between Clancy and a being from a distant planet, touching on such themes as meditation, hope and death.

With “The Midnight Gospel,” Pendleton Ward left “Adventure Time” far behind, while Duncan Trussell found new meaning in repurposing his funny, philosophical podcast interviews. Together, they pushed the boundaries of animation at Netflix with their trippy and darkly comic journey through a simulated multiverse undergoing apocalyptic meltdowns. And the fact that the series dropped during the pandemic lockdown makes it seem all the more relevant and therapeutic.
“The pandemic is surreal on its own. I hope the show is enjoyable as a distraction right now,” said Ward, who enjoyed the freeform structure. “That’s my favorite way to work now…to provide a comedy/visual aesthetic direction to work under but to break the rules if someone has a cool idea. Making art exciting and not just a grind!”

HBO Max subscribers won’t have to wait much longer to venture to distant lands. The streaming service has unveiled the first four minutes of “Bmo,” the first of four “Adventure Time: Distant Lands” hour-long specials that will premiere on HBO Max. The “Bmo” episode hits the streaming service on June 25.
It’s been nearly three years since the beloved Cartoon Network show aired its season finale, but “Bmo” is shaping up to offer plenty of laughs for longtime “Adventure Time” fans despite its far-out location. The upcoming episode centers on Bmo, the Gameboy-shaped robot from the original series. The episode kicks off on a whimsical note as Bmo pilots a spaceship towards Mars with the intent to start a tater tot farm — because why bother with spacefaring if you’re not going to start a tater tot farm on Mars? — while Bmo serenades their hat with a song.

HBO Max has unveiled the premiere dates for its “second wave” of original programming.
Some of the standouts that have been dated include the four “Adventure Time” specials, which will be available from June 25, the Seth Rogen comedy feature “American Pickle,” coming August 6, and the Amy Schumer docuseries “Expecting Amy,” which the streaming service will birth July 9.
The WarnerMedia streamer is launching May 27 with a substantial library of content, and a few originals, headlined by the Anna Kendrick comedy “Love Life.” HBO Max’s jewel in the crown upon launch was supposed to be the “Friends” reunion special, however, the coronavirus production shutdown put paid to hopes that it would be ready on time. WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-to-Consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt recently told Variety that special will potentially be completed by the end of summer.

HBO Max has announced it will officially resurrect the beloved animated series “Adventure Time” this June, about a month after the new streaming platform launches May 27. The first of four hourlong “Adventure Time” specials coming to HBO Max is “Adventure Time: Distant Lands — Bmo,” which will premiere Thursday, June 25. The Emmy and Peabody winner created by Pendleton Ward ran for 10 seasons and 283 episodes on Cartoon Network. The series finale aired on September 3, 2018. Ward launched his new show, “The Midnight Gospel,” on Netflix in April.
The official HBO Max synopsis for the return of “Adventure Time” reads: “Return to the Land of Ooo and beyond in ‘Adventure Time: Distant Lands.’ Based on the animated series, these four breakout specials explore the unseen corners of the world with characters both familiar and brand new. The first of these specials is ‘Bmo,’ which follows the lovable little robot on a new adventure. When...

The small miracle of “Adventure Time” in its earliest season came from creator Pendleton Ward’s ability to juggle ingredients that shouldn’t work so well together. The show was silly and profound in equal measures, treating that balance as the ultimate yin and yang. “The Midnight Gospel” brings that same notion to ambitious new heights, shedding the pretense of a “children’s show” that sometimes hindered the reach of “Adventure Time” and chases big ideas right out of the gate. It’s mind-blowing in the best possible way.
On some level, “The Midnight Gospel” has a much simpler premise than “Adventure Time”: Ward and co-creator Duncan Trussell have joined forces to animate select conversation from the comedian’s soul-searching and occasionally boisterous podcast, “The Duncan Trussell Family Hour,” where he interviews a range of characters about their life philosophies and usually their meditation practices. At the same time,...

April will bring us a brand-new psychedelic animated series from Pendleton Ward and Duncan Trussell. From what we’ve seen of it so far, the new Netflix project, called The Midnight Gospel, is going to make Ward’s acclaimed series Adventure Time look like a very sober walk in the part in comparison!
The series has been in the works for a while, as Trussell explains:
“Years ago I got an email from Pendleton Ward, the creator of Adventure Time, telling me he enjoyed my podcast The Duncan Trussell Family Hour. We soon became friends and Pendleton eventually came to me with an idea of how to do an animated version of my podcast. He said: ‘It’s like we replace the dialogue of Indiana Jones with podcast conversations.’
“This was the beginning of The Midnight Gospel, a show about Clancy, a slacker ‘spacecaster’ who lives in another dimension called The Chromatic Ribbon.

1. “#blackAF” Season 1 (available April 17)
Why Should I Watch? “#blackAF” marks the first Netflix original series from Kenya Barris after the “black-ish” (and “grown-ish” and “mixed-ish”) creator signed his $100 million overall deal with the streamer, and to mark the occasion, he’s putting himself in front of the camera. Co-starring with Rashida Jones, Barris plays a fictionalized version of himself: a very successful screenwriter and producer who’s also trying to be a good-ish husband to his wife, Joya (Jones) and adequate-ish father to their six children. If any of that sounds familiar, it should. “#blackAF” makes no bones about its similarities to Barris’ breakout ABC sitcom, recasting Anthony Anderson with the writer/creator he was always representing, and adding more F-bombs, drug use, and other adult themes to match the unrestricted nature of Netflix. Throw in a shooting style akin to “Modern Family” and “#blackAF” is the family comedy hybrid...

The climax of “Steven Universe: The Movie” comes not when the hero battles the vengeful, superpowered alien atop the planet-destroying weapon. It arrives a beat later when the titular Steven and his adversary, Spinel, form a delicate friendship while standing in a smoldering crater of their own making. Steven helps Spinal see that although the trauma she’s suffered can’t be erased, personal growth is good and possible.
Their rapprochement follows a slugfest as action-packed as any you’ll find on Cartoon Network.
And creator Rebecca Sugar had to fight like hell for it.
“I would get these notes that he should obliterate her and rid the universe of her evil,” says Sugar. “That’s really not what our show is about. But it’s what is expected from children’s programming — that if there’s a bad person, you kill them, and then everything will be fine.
