Luca Zappala
- Visual Effects
- Animation Department
Born in Italy, Tuscany, and following his interest in the digital arts and the film industry, Luca combined traditional art studies with a programming and IT degree at the renowned Technical Institute in Lucca.
He was then selected to attend a year-long Film and Animation course run by the prestigious NAD center (National Animation and design center, Canada). Completed his studies, after a stint in games and animation, he started his VFX career at Cinesite, working as FX technical director on the Academy Award and Bafta winner "The Golden Compass", and on "Eragon" and "X-men The Last Stand".
With a great eye for detail, light, and composition, and with a solid technical background, Luca amassed a substantial amount of titles in various capacities, working his way through different roles and contributing to three more Academy Award winners for VFX ("Inception", "Hugo" and "Ex-Machina", at Double Negative, Pixomondo and Milk-VFX respectively) and to several Bafta winners for VFX including "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2". He worked with Framestore on "The Tale of Despereaux", "Australia", "Wanted"; with Method Studios on "The hunger games: catching fire"; with Union VFX on several titles including "The Snowman", "Victoria & Abdul", "My Cousin Rachel (BIFA Nominee)" and "T2 Trainspotting (Bafta winner).
Among his recent titles as VFX Supervisor, there are: "Stranger Things S4", "Fate: The Winx Saga S2", "The Creator", "Living", "Mothering Sunday", "This Nan's Life", "SAS: Red Notice", "Avenue 5" and "Rocketman" and the Bifa nominees "Kindred" and Viggo Mortensen's "Falling".
His years on blockbuster titles gave him a firm grounding in the production of major features, whereas his considerable experience in indie movies and TV episodic gave him a chance to develop more creative skills. Over the years he formed solid relationships with directors and clients, which Luca cultivates and values enormously.
Strongly imaginative, with a focus on narration and beauty, and a very good eye for detail, color, composition, and timing. Luca is known for crafting effective solutions and delivering on time to happy clients.
He was recently shortlisted for 2020's European Film Awards award for Best Visual Effects for Falling (Dir. Viggo Mortensen) and for the 2021's BIFA Award for Best Visual Effects for "Mothering Sunday" (Dir. Eva Husson).
