Although Disney and Pixar Animation have had a tough time in recent years due to a combination of the Covid pandemic and the advent of the Disney+ streamer, on Friday it will release “Inside Out 2,” the first theatrically released sequels to one of Pixar’s massive critical and commercial hits in five years.
The original “Inside Out,” directed by three-time Oscar winner and current Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter, opened with $90.4 million nine years ago. At the time, it was Pixar’s second-best opening, and it’s still the animation house’s best debut for a non-sequel. This sequel, directed by Kelsey Mann,...

It’s been nearly a decade since the original film came out, so the animation required some updates before Inside Out 2 would be ready to go. For this, Pixar had a team of both new and returning craftspeople working tirelessly to rework the world and introduce a new set of emotions to tell a new story for the sequel.
Inside Out 2 returns to follow Riley Anderson (Kensington Tallman) and her emotional network during her teenage years. As she hits puberty, a crew of new emotions shows up, upsetting the balance Joy (Amy Poehler) has created in Riley’s mind. As the craftspeople were in charge of updating the world of Inside Out, they also had to deal with the introduction of new emotions, including Anxiety (Maya Hawke). Inside Out 2 releases in theaters on June 14, 2024.

The Duplasses are starting miniature with their first full-fledged family affair on all sides of the camera: the short film “Oh, Christmas Tree,” a bittersweet 10-minute ode to a father and daughter reliving their favorite holiday traditions.
It’s written by Mark Duplass, directed by his wife Katie Aselton (“Mack and Rita“), and stars their 16-year-old daughter Ora opposite her dad in roles that aren’t exactly autobiographical despite the onscreen, lived-in rapport. Here, the mother is dead, and the daughter, Claire, is now the one doing the parenting as her father grapples with mental health struggles. The short, currently seeking buyers out of Tribeca Festival, packs a lot into its brief running time, and for this trio, it also marks Ora’s entry into filmmaking as she readies to follow in her parents’ footsteps.

After the overperformance of Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, summer’s big wheels keep on turnin’ as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is looking at what could be the biggest stateside opening of the year to date with $85M, and another $50M abroad for a $135M global launch.
Legendary/Warner Bros’ Dune: Part Two owns the biggest domestic opening of 2024 so far with $82.5M, while both studios’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire counts the year’s largest global launch for a Hollywood movie at $194M.
Inside Out 2 also will rep the biggest post-Covid opening for a Disney animated movie, with many of its films lacking the wattage of pre-pandemic times. Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear became its best post-Covid domestic opening at $50M — and that was considered to be a total misfire for the Toy Story franchise.

“Inside Out 2” should evoke an emotion that Pixar hasn’t felt about the box office in years: Joy.
The follow-up film to 2015’s cerebral hit “Inside Out” is estimated to score a stellar $80 million to $90 million in its box office debut. If projections hold, it’ll overtake “Dune: Part Two” ($82.5 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million) as the biggest opening of the year.
As this weekend’s only new nationwide release, it’ll have no trouble taking the box office crown from the prior champion, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” The fourth installment in Sony’s buddy-cop comedy, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, launched over the weekend with $56.5 million and should add roughly $28 million in its sophomore outing.
“Inside Out 2” also looks to snap Pixar’s recent cold streak following last summer’s “Elemental” (which scored the worst start in Pixar’s modern history...

Maya Hawke took on a mothering role while filming the final season of “Stranger Things.”
The actress told Entertainment Tonight that after joining the hit Netflix show in Season 3, she felt a responsibility to be a shoulder for her co-stars to lean on during the series finale.
“As a late addition cast member, I feel like it’s my job to be here to facilitate their feelings and just be grateful and excited to have been a part of it at all,” Hawke said, adding of the soon-to-be-released final season: “It’s already starting to be heartbreaking, you know? I mean it’s the end of a really long journey. Longer for some of my castmates, even, than for me. So it’s really sentimental.”
“Stranger Things” Season 5 will premiere later in 2024. The ensemble cast includes David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Joe Keery, Sadie Sink, Finn Wolfhard, and more.

Nine years after exploring the emotions of 11-year-old Riley, Inside Out 2 made its debut in Los Angeles on Monday, rolling out a whole new range of feelings as Riley becomes a teenager.
Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust from the original film are still in the mix, but now are joined by Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment. While some changes have been made to the voice cast — Liza Lapira replaces Mindy Kaling as Disgust and Tony Hale replaces Bill Hader as Fear — Amy Poehler returns as Joy, still the star emotion for a 13-year-old Riley.
Of coming back to the Inside Out world almost a decade later, Poehler told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet that, “It’s actually given me an incredible gift, to be in a film like this means a lot. It’s very hard to be in something that is really good, that means...

Hits from the weekend
Streaming movies and shows made up the majority of the top five titles this past weekend, based on traffic to their IMDb pages. That’s thanks to a trio of Netflix titles and the new Star Wars series, “The Acolyte.” In theaters, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise delivered Hollywood a much-needed box office win, while ‘The Watchers’—the mystery-horror film starring Dakota Fanning—drew enough interest to land in the top 10.
By the time ‘Hit Man’ dropped on Netflix, movie fans were probably well aware of who Glen Powell was, but the popularity of the comedic action film brought more IMDb users’ attention to co-star Adria Arjona and director Richard Linklater. If Arjona looked familiar to viewers, it’s likely from several supporting roles in other streaming hits like “Good Omens,” “Andor,” and ‘6 Underground’ with Ryan Reynolds.
It’s not often that directors crack the top five (or even top 10) names on IMDb, but viewers were clearly interested to know more about Richard Linklater, the versatile and irreverent director of indie films like ‘Slacker’ and ‘Dazed and Confused,’ who also found mainstream recognition with ‘School of Rock.’
Also big on Netflix were the French killer shark movie ‘Under Paris’ and the Benedict Cumberbatch miniseries “Eric,” which released all six episodes two weeks ago. Elsewhere in streaming, “The Acolyte” has had no trouble finding its audience on Disney+. According to Disney, the show drew 4.8 million viewers on its first day, making it the streamer’s biggest hit of 2024 to date. Amandla Stenberg and Dafne Keen were in the top five names on IMDb, and both will likely remain popular through the show’s first season, which ends on July 16.
What’s in store for the coming week?
Expect next weekend to be all about “The Boys,” the raunchy comic book adaptation from showrunner Eric Kripke. The first three episodes of Season 4 arrive Thursday (6/13) on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping weekly. Returning cast members Karl Urban, Antony Starr, and Erin Moriarty will likely climb IMDb’s STARmeter, but a few new supes on the scene could put some breakouts in the spotlight, such as Valorie Curry (playing Firecracker) or Susan Heyward (as Sister Sage).
In theaters, Disney and Pixar’s animated ‘Inside Out 2’ is a shoo-in to win next weekend’s box office, though it may not have the same interest on IMDb as the streaming releases. The original voice cast of emotions are returning, but it’s more likely one of the newcomers will spike in popularity, like Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety, Ayo Edibiri (“The Bear”) as Envy, or Paul Walter Houser (‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Richard Jewell’) as Embarrassment.

It's been a difficult few years for Pixar. During the pandemic, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek decided to drop movies like Soul, Luca, and Turning Red on Disney+, creating the impression that its films were only fit for streaming before Lightyear underperformed at the box office.
Last year, Elemental was quickly written off as a "flop" before proving it had legs (ultimately grossing shy of $500 million), so the pressure is on this weekend's Inside Out 2 to deliver and prove there's still plenty of life left in the studio beyond Toy Story.
Following the sequel's premiere yesterday evening, the first social media reactions are in and they're overwhelmingly positive. As you'll see below, it sounds just as good - if not better - than its 2015 predecessor.
These come just days after Fandango revealed that Inside Out 2 has surpassed the first movie's advance ticket sales, becoming the highest ticket pre-seller...

He might voice a cop in the latest Disney-Pixar movie, but Flea is still a rebel at heart.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers rocker appeared to forget where he was for a moment as he posed with both middle fingers in the air on the purple carpet of Monday’s Inside Out 2 world premiere in Los Angeles.
It all appeared to be in good fun as he also busted out some dance moves for the cameras. Deadline has reached out to Flea’s reps for comment.
Despite the unexpected rockstar vibes, the event at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre drew plenty of families, including Ashlee Simpson, husband Evan Ross, and their brood.
Flea reprises his voice role as Mind Cop Worker Jake from the original 2015 film, which takes place inside a young girl’s mind, following the personifications of her changing emotions.

Pixar has been one of the premiere names in animation ever since the first "Toy Story" released in 1995, changing the game forever. Disney's beloved animation company was also one of the true Hollywood box office titans, with pretty much everything Pixar touched turning to gold, though "The Good Dinosaur" serves as a rare exception to the rule. Unfortunately, the pandemic changed all of that, and Pixar has had a rough time recovering, with "Lightyear" bombing badly after several of the studio's originals went straight to Disney+. "Inside Out 2" aims to change the narrative next weekend and bring the studio back to its dominant place at the top of the box office charts.

The summer movie kickoff has been a little bumpy, but the staff at IMDb have their sights set on several highly anticipated movies and shows coming out in June.
See IMDb’s June Picks
If you need something light and fun for the weekend, check out Glen Powell and Adria Arjona in ‘Hit Man’ on Netflix. Based on the true story of part-time undercover investigator Gary Johnson, director Richard Linklater's crime comedy finds Powell moonlighting as a fake hit man who starts to fall for a woman who enlists his services.
Those looking for thrills and chills can head to the theater, where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence go undercover in ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ and Dakota Fanning finds herself trapped with a bunch of strangers under spooky circumstances in the directorial debut of M. Night Shyamalan's daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan.
The rest of June will keep many fans busy with new episodes of three Emmy-winning series: Season 4 of “The Boys” (6/13) on Prime Video, Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” (6/16) on Max, and Season 3 of “The Bear” (6/27) on Hulu.
There’s not a ton on the menu for families, but ‘Inside Out 2’ is expected to be one of 2024’s box office bright spots. The Pixar sequel brings back Riley’s original emotions and adds Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety and Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear’) as Ennui.

David Byrne and Devo have unveiled the contribution to Noise for Now Vol. 2, an abortion access and reproductive rights benefit compilation landing everywhere on June 21st.
The song, “Empire,” was originally written by Byrne and Devo for Byrne’s collaboration-heavy 1997 solo album, Feelings. Two different collaborations came from those sessions — “Wicked Little Doll,” which ended up making the album, and “Empire,” which they’ve now unearthed for the Noise for Now comp.
With marching drums, regal horns, and a military-esque flair, Byrne and Devo satirize the American capitalist empire. Though there is a majestic air to the song, beneath the bright hues are some more sinister tones. “The strong alone will survive,” Byrne sings, less a promise and more a harrowing threat. Stream “Empire” below.
“‘Empire’ is an ironic capitalist fascist anthem and, at the time, I thought our version was just too mean and caustic for release,” Byrne said in a press release.

Each season of Stranger Things feels unique and captivating, both tonally and stylistically, and fans love to argue which of the four is best. Much of the fandom enjoys the first season’s novelty and tight scripts. The horror elements and intimate setting made Hawkins shine. Others enjoy the fourth season the most because of its blockbuster size and scope. The introduction of Vecna as the endgame villain also raised the stakes beyond what the first three seasons’ antagonists could. That often leaves season 2 and season 3 fighting for the bottom of the rankings, and the second season’s similarities to season 1 make for a safer bet when putting together the hierarchy.
Stranger Things season 3 was still critically acclaimed and well-loved by audiences at the time of release. In the five years since, this return to the Upside Down has been criticized for various reasons, though. The eight episodes took place during the summer,...

We're only 9 days away from Inside Out 2 arriving in theaters, and Pixar has released the final trailer for the sequel (via Toonado.com). That puts the spotlight on many of Riley's new emotions, including a fun take on Nostalgia.
Maya Hawke's Anxiety commands much of the screentime here, though, and Joy actress Amy Poehler recently dropped some hints about that character in an interview with Refinery29 Australia.
"Anxiety shows up for a reason," she told the site. "I think we tend to want to push anxiety away - 'Don't worry about it, it's fine!' We want to kind of get it out of our life. But what I think is really cool is they [the filmmakers] let anxiety show up to protect Riley."

Considering Quentin Tarantino’s close bond with Uma Thurman, it was practically destiny that daughter Maya Hawke would work with him. Maybe destiny isn’t the right word…perhaps what we’re looking for here is nepotism, that naughty word in Hollywood that sees children of celebrities being given opportunities because of who their parents are. But Maya Hawke isn’t bothered by nepotism one bit. In fact, she’s well aware that that’s why she was cast in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
In a piece in The Times, Maya Hawke acknowledged that Tarantino most certainly cast her as one of Charles Manson’s followers because of her parents, Thurman and Ethan Hawke. “I’ve been wildly made fun of for this clip when I said, on the red carpet, that I auditioned…I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic...

Maya Hawke, the talented daughter of Hollywood icons Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, has gracefully navigated the pressures of coming from such a renowned lineage. In a candid discussion with the UK’s Sunday Times, she addressed her feelings about her privileged background, candidly stating she is “comfortable with not deserving” the life and opportunities she has. Embracing Her Family Legacy Hawke’s relationship with her parents plays a significant role in her grounded approach to fame. She reflected, My relationships with my parents are really honest and positive, and that supersedes anything anyone can say about it. Despite acknowledging that many...

Pixar isn’t pulling any punches when its new film, Inside Out 2, comes to cinemas on June 14. At a time when films come to digital and streaming services alarmingly fast, Pixar says Inside Out 2 will get an extended theatrical run in favor of being rushed to Disney+ shortly after release.
Speaking with Bloomberg, Pixar president Jim Morris says Inside Out 2 is playing in theaters for at least 100 days. “I hope that we will not release another feature film on Disney+,” Morris explained. “If we do more stuff for Disney+, it should be a series, and then that makes a clean demarcation between what we do for theaters and what we do for streaming.”
Pixar found varying success with several of its most recent films, including Soul, Luca, Turning Red, Lightyear, and Elemental. The studio’s biggest releases underperformed theatrically, mostly due to the pandemic, except Elemental, which...

Coveted for its prized superior animation, Pixar is all set to go back to its Inside Out franchise. The first iteration of it released way back in 2015, made a resounding connection with audiences of all ages, and struck a deep chord for its themes and characters representing the natural human mind. Revolving around the character of Riley, the film’s genius and acclaim came from its artistic choices to depict the five main characters or primary emotions that resided in her brain, aka the Headquarters.

Disney seems to be in the mood to bring back their audiences to the cinema. Their next animated film from Pixar Inside Out 2 is reportedly all set to have an exclusive 100-day theatrical window before it debuts on streaming. The president of Pixar recently mentioned that the company wants to re-train audiences from expecting the films at home sooner.
This would be the highest theatrical window for Pixar in the recent past as their post-pandemic releases Lightyear and Elemental had shorter windows. The animation studio released three of their most anticipated films on Disney Plus during the pandemic, which they reportedly hope to move away from.

Maya Hawke Is Ok With Being a Nepo Baby: ‘I’m Comfortable With Not Deserving It and Doing It Anyway’
Maya Hawke is fine with being called a “nepo baby.”

Hollywood loves a buzz word and for the last few years, it feels like “nepo-baby” has been the buzziest. When you really think about it though, family giving family a leg up in life — in most cases — is rather innocuous. And the concept doesn’t only apply to work in the entertainment industry, but in every field. Or at least this is what Maya Hawke — daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman — would want you to believe. Talking to The Times of London for a recent interview, Hawke defended her benefiting from her parents’ fame and admits she can’t help the life she was born into.
“‘Deserves’ is a complicated word… There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway,” Hawke said when asked if she deserves the work she’s been given.

Maya Hawke has accepted the term “nepo baby.”
The Stranger Things star, daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, recently opened up to The Times of London about her path to Hollywood, acknowledging that she’s had an advantage because of her parents.
While considering whether she deserves the success she’s received in the industry, Hawke said, “‘Deserves’ is a complicated word. There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway. And I know that my not doing it wouldn’t help anyone. I saw two paths when I was first starting, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job and go to open casting roles.”
Hawke said she’s “comfortable” choosing the second option and embracing her nepotism, even if it leads to jokes.

Maya Hawke has addressed the “nepo baby” phenomenon head on, saying the reason she was cast in a big film role was totally for “nepotistic reasons.”
Hawke, the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, was cast by Quentin Tarantino in his 2019 movie Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Hawke played Flower Child, one of Charles Manson’s followers, and at the time gave an interview saying she auditioned for the role.
Now she has told The Times of London she was mocked for saying that, and reflected: “I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic reasons — I think I totally did.”
