When Calls the Heart focuses on second chances, which Sunday's episode centers around.
Spoilers for When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 8 hint that Tom returns to Hope Valley, anxious to make amends and still showcase the choir's talent.
Two other new arrivals showed up in Hope Valley, also hoping to clear the air and get a second chance. This should be a heartwarming episode.
After Tom learned in When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 7 that J.B. Sweeney cheated residents out of their money and skipped town, he was determined to make things right.
That won't be easy since the Hope Valley residents are bound to feel cheated out of their money and disappointed that they won't get to sing in the festival, especially Allie and Angela, who were extremely excited to be scouted.
Nathan and Elizabeth agree to help him host a choir festival right there in Hope Valley.

Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
The world of “Bridgerton” is no stranger to competition. Among London’s elite, wealthy debutantes and ambitious suitors vie for attention and supremacy on every level, from status and title to the very notion of a “diamond” — the best the season has to offer. What better way to celebrate the eagerly awaited Season 3 (Part 1 now streaming and Part 2 due June 13) than by revisiting past and previous diamonds?
Now that there are fully 20 of them out in the world, we decided to rank the best “Bridgerton” episodes, and to not overly favor any one season over another. A show doesn’t become an overnight popular horny period sensation without some certified bangers (pun intended), so we revisited Seasons 1 and 2 along with Season 3 – Part 1 to pull the greatest hits.

If you have seen any of the shows influenced by Neil Gaiman, you know that nothing happens for no reason. These fantasy series are usually full of references and metaphors, and that makes the viewer's experience with these shows ten times more exciting.
Even though Dead Boy Detectives is only based on Neil Gaiman's characters and doesn't have the author in the cast, it still fits the description. The show is full of references and metaphors, and while some are more or less understandable, others still mess with the viewer's brain.
What Does the White Lily Mean?
In the farewell scene between Edwin and Cat King, the latter comes to him with a lily as a gift. The scene is far more honest and heartfelt than any of the previous ones, and Edwin even gives Cat King, who has essentially held him hostage, a kiss on the cheek. However, the...

Usually, it's exciting when an old character returns, but Thomas Higgins only brought back uncomfortable feelings.
On When Calls the Heart, Season 11 Episode 6, Thomas Higgins returned, only this time he was portrayed by James Kot as the head of the Valley District School Board.
He still had one goal -- to make Elizabeth Thorton's life miserable.
Thomas: Good morning, Mrs. Thornton. Thomas Higgins.
Elizabeth: I could hardly forget. What are you doing here?

Thomas Higgins was a classic sexual harasser. He knew he held the power, especially since he wanted to change some testing standards, and Elizabeth hated adhering to those standards.
She always wanted to teach with her own methods, partly because she fought so hard to teach Angela in a regular classroom. Now, she uses other methods to assist Toby with learning math.

Netflix’s most recent supernatural hit Dead Boy Detectives didn’t take too much time to enter the streaming’s top 10 chart, holding a solid position since its release on April 25.
While the show’s compelling plot made many Netflix’s viewers binge-watch it soon after it was dropped on the platform, Dead Boy Detectives’ immense success is still not the main reason for its very possible renewal for yet another season.
Though we learn pretty much about Charles and Edwin’s investigations that they carry out while also helping other ghosts to get to the afterlife, there’s not so much to get from the plot about the boys’ background, especially when it comes to an attempt to understand their personal trauma that clearly has something to do with their families or surrounding.
Despite the fact that the overall essence of the family bond runs like a red thread through the whole show,...

On April 25, a new series was released that all fans of Neil Gaiman's work have been waiting for an incredibly long time. After all, this is not just a live-action adaptation of one of the famous American author's works, but a story that takes place in the same universe as The Sandman! We are, of course, talking about Dead Boy Detectives, a young adult comedy-drama that skillfully combines elements of occult detective and supernatural horror.
The new series has pleasantly impressed critics and audiences alike, with an astounding 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But despite fan love, rave reviews, and the top spot on Netflix's regional charts, Dead Boy Detectives doesn't seem to be getting the ratings it deserves. Unfortunately, all of this puts the show at risk of cancellation.

Created by Steve Yockey, Dead Boy Detectives is a spin-off from the Netflix adaptation of The Sandman.

It's always exciting when a series revisits old characters and storylines.
On When Calls the Heart, Season 11 Episode 6, Thomas Higgins, Elizabeth's old foe and the Superintendent of the School Board, returns to cause trouble.
According to the weekly promo and the photos, he seems even more determined to destroy her career and reputation than he was before.
Thomas Higgins last appeared in When Calls the Heart Season 4 Episode 11 when he wrote a letter that caused Elizabeth to get fired. He only wrote it because she turned him down and sexually harassed her again, hinting he would make it disappear if she dated him.
Elizabeth found proof that he had sexually harassed other teachers, too, and was reinstated, so Higgens likely carries a massive grudge against her.
It's a shame we couldn't bring back Landis instead. While initially set in his ways about how the Valley School District should be run,...

[This story contains spoilers from Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives.]
Dead Boy Detectives star George Rexstrew is quick to describe his first in-person encounter with his co-stars ahead of filming the pilot: “Love at first sight.”
Up to that point, interactions between the leads of the Netflix series that released April 25 had taken place during chemistry reads through computer screens. But with filming commencing, Rexstrew would meet Jayden Revri at Heathrow Airport where they flew from London to Vancouver. A day later, Kassius Nelson would join them.
“We built such an incredible relationship before we even read a script,” Revri tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We were just so open and we really helped each other. We had the most beautiful relationship, us four together.”
Those four are Revri, Rexstrew, Nelson and Yuyu Kitamura, the latter who says she was exposed to her costars “British charm” on the Vancouver set for only a few hours during the pilot,...

One of the many great things that both critics and casual viewers point out about The Dead Boy Detectives is the way all the characters were introduced to the story. Even though the first season only lasted 8 episodes, the writers spent enough time establishing the background of each main character.
However, introducing a character is only the first step of the job. Getting them from point A to point B is an entire journey, and one of the four characters failed to make it in the first season. Fortunately, if Netflix decides to renew the show, this plot hole can be easily resolved.
What Happened to Dead Boy Detectives’ Crystal?
Although the show is called Dead Boy Detectives and follows the adventures of two ghostly best friends solving supernatural mysteries, in the very first episode, a living, breathing human named Crystal Palace joins them.

Another robbery hit The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills crew — only this time, it was Kyle Richards’ daughter, Farrah Aldjufrie.
The Buying Beverly Hills star and the eldest daughter of Richards lost nearly a million dollars worth of items.
It’s been a week since the robbery, and the Lasd Major Crimes unit is looking into it. As of now, no one has been picked up for the crime.
According to TMZ, Farrah may not have been targeted because of who she is or her family. It’s believed a South American burglary crew hit her home because of the area and its known wealth.
Farrah lost several expensive items, but some sentimental items were taken from her residence. Jewelry passed down from Mauricio Umansky’s family came up missing, and essential milestone gifts were also boosted from her home.
However, some Housewives fans and critics aren’t sure the estimate is correct.

Twenty years ago, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s breakout hit The O.C., about a group of teens coming of age in Newport Beach, premiered on Fox. By the time the 27-episode first season aired its finale in the spring of 2004, the show was the highest-rated drama on TV among adults 18 to 34 and had catapulted its stars — whose characters were affectionately known as the “Core Four” — to massive, near-overnight popularity.
It wouldn’t be the first or last young adult series in the U.S. to generate a cultural frenzy. For us The Sandman fans who yearned for a second season of Neil Gaiman's most enigmatic TV project, Dead Boy Detectives was a life-saver. The new Netflix show that follows the adventures of two ghosts who prefer solving supernatural mysteries to enjoying their afterlife is a fantastic addition to the already rich universe of The Sandman.
The spinoff somehow manages to be very similar and very different to its parent show at the same time. Despite the shared universe and the general The Sandman-esque vibe, Dead Boy Detectives is much more light-hearted and, if we may, fun.
Still, it was a real treat for fans to go full "meme Dicaprio" mode when they saw literally anything — or anyone — directly from The Sandman. The first Endless cameo awaited us right in the first episode, when Kirby Howell-Baptiste's Death arrived to collect a soul and Charles and Edwin had...

Recently, the television industry as a whole has taken a huge step forward in terms of inclusivity. We now have access to a whole variety of series in different genres that include queer characters, characters of color, disabled characters, and every other oppressed group as equals.
While the fight is far from over, it's good to see yet another popular show explore the sexuality of its characters without detracting from the plot. Dead Boy Detectives made sure to highlight Edwin's first steps in accepting his queer identity. This has also led to a lot of speculation about his relationship with Cat King.
Is Edwin in Love With Charles?
Episode 7 of the show brought many fans to tears with a heartfelt conversation between Edwin, portrayed by George Rexstrew, and his best friend Charles, portrayed by Jayden Revri. Though Edwin's confession was met with a gentle rejection, the scene was played...

Once set up at the Max streaming service, the TV series Dead Boy Detectives, which is based on characters Neil Gaiman created for DC Comics in the pages of The Sandman issue #25, is now calling Netflix its home, having moved away from Max last year because it “doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu.” The show premiered on April 25th (you can read our review Here) – and to mark the occasion, a new addition to the team here at JoBlo.com, Kyanna Mondezie, was given the opportunity to conduct interviews with several members of the cast: George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, Kassius Nelson, and Yuyu Kitamura. You can hear what they had to say about their experience working on the show by checking out the video embedded above. Also interviewed were series creator Steve Yockey and showrunner Beth Schwartz.

Charles (Jayden Revri) and Edwin (George Rexstrew) would move heaven and earth and the entire underworld for each other. In Dead Boy Detectives, the duo spends their afterlife solving mysteries for the undead, but the love they have for each other is at the heart of the show. Somewhere during their decades together, Edwin’s feelings for Charles started to shift. He develops romantic feelings for his best friend and eventually confesses his love after Charles rescues him from Hell. Co-showrunner Steve Yockey tells TV Insider that the “goal” of the first season was always to “tell the story of Edwin’s discovery of his identity. And not just the discovery of his identity after 100 years of being dead, but 60 years of that spent in Hell.” As you see in the first season, Edwin begins to recognize his sexual identity for the first time. Since Edwin lived during the Edwardian era,...

Within the first seven minutes, Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives tells you exactly what its greatest love story is going to be. Hanging onto the ledge outside the London offices of their supernatural detective agency, Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) are waiting out a visit from Death. Kirby reprises her casually cool and soothingly collected version of the reaper from Netflix’s other Neil Gaiman adaptation The Sandman. If Death catches them, it would mean being carted off to the afterlife and separated. For 30 years, the two eternal teenagers have walked just behind the veil of our world as an unbreakable pair and two pretty damn-good detectives. We are living for Dead Boy Detectives. In Netflix‘s cheeky new dramedy, the supernatural duo created by Neil Gaiman and introduced in The Sandman graphic novels jumps from page to screen, thanks to the utterly lovely chemistry between stars George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri. And to prove that Dead men do tell tales, we asked the guys to explain what’s up with their best mates from the beyond. “My character’s called Edwin Payne, and in 1916, he died as the result of a demonic summoning ritual gone very, very wrong. And that sent him to Hell for 70 years,” offers relative newcomer Rexstrew. “He managed to escape and shortly after his escape, he went back to his old school, St. Hilorian’s, where he died and came across Charles, who was on the cusp of death. Edwin actually nursed him in his final few hours, and when Charles died,...

In Season of Mists, the fourth volume of The Sandmancomics series, Neil Gaiman penned a ghost story set in a British boarding school to demonstrate the problems being caused by Lucifer’s plan to get back at Dream. Gaiman liked the characters enough that he brought them back for a Vertigo Comics crossover event, and they wound up receiving their own spin-off comic from Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham.
Now, the Dead Boy Detectives are receiving their own show from Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz. Set in the same universe as The Sandman, this series follows all the zany thrills and heartwarming moments of Charles (Jayden Revri) and Edwin’s (George Rexstrew) adventures solving supernatural mysteries that no one else can, with the help of clairvoyant Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and new friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura).
“Charles was more or less me as a boy,” executive producer and Sandman author Gaiman tells Tudum.

In the Netflix adaptation of Vertigo’s Dead Boy Detectives, Monty is Esther’s crow familiar, whom the witch turns into a human spy to capture the Dead Boy Detectives for her own sinister plan. As humans, we often contemplate the simple lives that animals tend to have, especially when we’re going through the complexities of existence as intelligent beings. This would sound like something Slavoj Zizek would say, but feeling emotions can sometimes be the biggest burden of human existence, and that is what Monty too comes to understand once he becomes a human.

Why did Esther turn Monty into a human?
In witchcraft and its associated folklore, a familiar is like a guardian spirit who assists a witch, and that was what Monty was to Esther as well. As Esther’s familiar, this crow spirit was Esther’s companion and was often subjected to her inhuman experiments.

In Netflix’s Dead Boy Detective series, David is the ominous demon who had possessed Crystal Palace until Charles and Edwin exorcized him out of her body. As a sadistic supernatural being, he feeds on Crystal’s torment even after he exits her body. In fact, to make her suffer even more, David erases some of Crystal’s memories in hopes that they will act as a bargaining tool for him to get back into her body. Demons typically cannot possess a person against their will, but owing to their deceitful nature, they often manipulate their victims into letting them into their bodies.

Some of DC’s best live-action small-screen adaptations were produced on the now-defunct streaming service DC Universe, where some of the renowned showrunners of network showbiz collaborated with the prolific creative minds of comic-book literature to create faithful adaptations of some of the most beloved DC comic series. As some of the fans might surely remember, Doom Patrol turned out to be arguably the best adaptation, and along with a myriad of zany, outlandish characters, the series first introduced the trio lead of Dead Boy Detectives outside the funny pages. The introduction was supposed to be a precursor to the spin-off series of the same name, and the actors portraying their roles in the Doom Patrol cameo were finalized to reprise their roles in the new series back then. This was exciting news for fans, as seeing how well Doom Patrol was adapted on a small screen, the possibility of...

In Netflix’s adaptation of Vertigo’s Dead Boy Detectives, the Night Nurse is a trans-dimensional being who works at a bureaucratic organization called the Lost and Found Department in the afterlife. This organization operates under the dominion of Death to collect deceased children. To be precise, the Night Nurse’s organization makes sure that these dead children are taken to the afterlife instead of letting them roam the earth until eternity. But, like all bureaucratic organizations, even the Lost and Found Department has been showing discrepancies in their performance. The Night Nurse blames this underperformance on overpopulation, claiming that they never expected the human population to increase to such astronomical proportions. She is not bothered by human morals and would do anything to maintain order; at times, she does not even resist using force against humans who come between her and her targets. She is able to make people...

The mythos of the Sandman universe is ever-expanding, and the diversifying, inclusive nature of the lore makes it easier to integrate various themes and elements from cultures across the world. This aspect is well respected in Netflix’s small-screen adaptation of the comic-book saga, which is also reflected in their recently released series Dead Boy Detectives, adapted from the comics of the same name and a major part of Neil Gaiman’s universe revolving around the Dreaming.
The first season of Dead Boy Detectives primarily follows two major plotlines: the afterlife agents tracking the ghost detective duo and the conflict with Esther the witch. Both of these work alongside an episode-oriented narrative pattern. While creating a separate space for itself, the series acknowledges its place in the larger Sandman universe and leaves enough space for clues that can be explored in upcoming seasons or even in the second chapter of the Sandman series.

The Cat King is a quirky and unusual supernatural being residing in Port Townsend in the Netflix adaptation. Despite his youthful, late-20s appearance, he is hundreds of years old. True to his name, he reigns as the sovereign ruler over all the cats in Port Townsend, with the felines under his command and dominion. Unlike many other supernatural entities, the Cat King is not entirely immortal. Instead, he possesses nine lives, a trait rooted in the proverb associated with cats. One of these nine lives is taken when Esther beats him to death. However, the Cat King also wields mystical abilities, such as shapeshifting into a cat or another human and teleportation at will. While initially depicted as a hedonistic and antagonistic leader of the cats, the Cat King’s character arc reveals a more nuanced anti-hero with his own intricate agendas. Notably, he is also portrayed as a gender-neutral icon,...

Arguably mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi’s second-best work, Yu Yu Hakusho, was released in 1990. It was a supernatural/detective manga that revolved around a deceased protagonist who gained the ability to stay on the mortal plane in a ghostly form on the condition of assisting in various paranormal investigations. A year later, in 1991, prolific comic-book writer Neil Gaiman adapted a similar concept in his Sandman universe created for DC Comics, and by adding his signature gothic flair to provide a macabre spin to children’s detective stories, he introduced Dead Boy Detectives to the world. The grim yet hopeful nature of the stories perfectly complemented the overall tone of his Sandman universe, and even though the later runs of Dead Boy Detectives have gradually become more sporadic in nature, they remain one of DC’s more experimental, character-driven stories, which highlights the overall versatile nature of the comic franchise.

Dead Boy Detectives was initially developed for television by HBO Max in 2021. After a long and winding road of purgatory, the series eventually is reaching Netflix in early 2023. (Please note that this has nothing to do with Netflix licensing Max properties as of late.) The adaptation of DC Comics has a cult following that can tap into every popular young demographic.
Now, every comic book property will continuously develop in the ever-competitive streaming landscape. This makes it more surprising how ordinary, at times, Dead Boy Detectives can be, considering Netflix’s binge model. Dead Boy Detectives is like a purgatory Hardy Boys procedural, with the boys trying to solve a new case weekly.
However, as the series progresses, you see its overall potential. You hope the streaming giant will allow Dead Boy Detectives to achieve that potential.

In theory, Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives should be a feast for the misery wraiths, faceless creatures who feed on pain and suffering. The ghostly protagonists, Edwin (George Rexstrew) and Charles (Jayden Revri), are both teenagers bullied to death at the same British boarding school seven decades apart. They spend their time finding closure for other lost souls, like a pair of high schoolers cut down in their prime or a family slaughtered by an abusive patriarch. And they’re constantly on the run from the agents of Death, who would condemn Edwin to Hell on a technicality.
Yet the duo only ever encounter one such monster over the eight-episode first season, and perhaps that’s because despite its gloomy-sounding premise, Dead Boy Detectives is the furthest thing from dour. Dark, sure; bittersweet, sometimes. But it’s never less than entertaining, thanks to an appealingly quirky lead cast and a cheeky sense of humor.

“Dead Boy Detectives” threads a very specific tonal needle. Based on the Neil Gaiman graphic novels, the new Netflix series follows two dead teens — Edwin and Charles, played by George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri — and their flourishing careers as P.I.s who help other ghosts with unfinished business while trying to avoid Hell.
“We created a darkly comedic horror mystery,” co-creator (with Beth Schwartz) Steve Yockey told IndieWire. “We were always trying to make the Hardy Boys on acid, basically. As long as you stay grounded with the emotional stories, then you can go crazy with everything else.”
Over the course of eight episodes, “Dead Boy Detectives” does just that. Part of the series’ thrill is found in its opening credits, which distill the essence of the show’s tone into #friendgoals as two skeletons cavort and frolic while ominous Easter eggs proliferate. Lucas's return to Hope Valley caused quite a reaction.
Many things changed, but Lucas still liked to surprise others and cause a splash, and on When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 3, his return rattled several locals, including Nathan and Elizabeth, who had gotten used to their new normal.
Meanwhile, Bill was determined to prove that Montague was involved with Lucas's attack, but someone else nearby also seemed sketchy.
It is obvious that Nathan and Elizabeth still care about each other, but it gets tedious that Lucas makes another announcement every time their relationship moves forward.
It'll become tiresome if Lucas's other role is the thorn in their blossoming relationship.
Rosemary and Lee insinuated that Lucas still had feelings for Elizabeth, while others seemed to think Nathan was the one to root for. Technically, Elizabeth doesn't need a love interest.
There isn't anything wrong with her being friends with both men and focusing on finding herself,...

Do you have a pesky ghost haunting you? Has a demon stolen your core memories? You may want to ring the Dead Boy Detectives.
Meet Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), “the brains” and “the brawn” behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency.

Once set up at the Max streaming service, the TV series Dead Boy Detectives, which is based on characters Neil Gaiman created for DC Comics in the pages of The Sandman issue #25, is now calling Netflix its home, having moved away from Max last year because it “doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu.” Netflix has set an April 25th premiere date for the show, and with that date just a few weeks away, a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above to see the titular characters deal with paranormal cases while My Chemical Romance plays on the soundtrack.
Since these characters were introduced in the comic book The Sandman, it seems fitting that they ended up on Netflix, as the streamer is also home to the live-action The Sandman series.
