Patrick Bateman is one of modern cinema’s most interesting and deconstructible characters. Between his unsettling speech pattern, his false smile, and his dead, cold eyes- There is certainly a lot to unpack. Specifically, the scene in American Psycho where Bateman and his peers are showing off to each other in a board room. Otherwise known as the iconic business card scene. In the scene, most of the character’s ethos can be seen through his behavior and inner monologue. When Patrick shows his friends his new business card, we see each of them present their own cards one by one, with each one seemingly being the exact same, but the dialogue and reactions to them tell us a different story.
The movie (and novel that the movie is based on) is clearly a satire meant to poke fun at the stockbroker elitist lifestyle that was common in the 1980s.

In early 2020 Hal Hartley managed to Kickstarter-finance Where to Land, a feature based on, so he claimed, the best screenplay he’d ever written. Other things––you surely noticed––from early 2020 made small, independent features a difficult prospect. Nearly four years on, however, Hartley’s returning to finance that same film with the same $300,000 price tag in a new Kickstarter campaign.
Regulars Bill Sage and Robert John Burke are expected to star alongside Katelyn Sparks; no word on the once-cast Edie Falco, Parker Posey, and Elina Löwensohn, but any appearing in his film is about the least-surprising thing that might transpire. With an essential, extensive Hartley retrospective now running on the Criterion Channel, one hopes interest in this filmmaker––among the most appreciably sui generis America’s produced the last 40 years––is sufficient to finance a new project.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Joseph Fulton, a well-regarded fifty-eight year-old director of romantic comedies,...

Sharpen your ax, order new business cards, and crank up some Huey Lewis and the News because the LA-based comic book publisher Sumerian is bringing an American Psycho comic book to shelves. According to Deadline, the four-issue series, publishing later this year, “will have a dual narrative, one showing a different perspective of Bateman’s killing spree (with a notable “twist”) and another revealing a modern-day arc with “surprising connections to the past.” The new arc is a sequel to the 2000 thriller from director Mary Harron.
Sumerian’s American Psycho comic book centers on “an all-new psychopath as social media obsessed millennial, Charlie (Charlene) Carruthers, goes on a downward spiral filled with violence. Drug fueled partying leads to bloodshed as Charlie leaves a trail of bodies on her way to discovering the truth about her dark nature.”

The 23rd annual Boston Underground Film Festival took place at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Ma from March 22 to March 26. The genre-blending lineup included premieres, festival favorites, anticipated titles, shorts, and more.
Here’s what I saw at this year’s event…
The Unheard
The festival’s opening night kicked off with the world premiere of The Unheard, which pairs the exciting New England talents of director Jeffrey A. Brown, following up his dynamic debut The Beach House, and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, hot off the success of Alexandre Aja’s Crawl. All three were in attendance for a post-screening Q&a.
Hearing impaired since the age of 8 as a result of meningitis, 20-year-old Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental gene editing procedure to restore her hearing, which coincides with a homecoming to prepare her family’s empty summer house for sale. You can always count on horror to test boundaries, so it’s no surprise that the genre has long explored the taboo of cannibalism. Cannibals are most often associated with exploitation horror, leading to a cannibal horror boon in the ’70s and early ’80s, thanks to Italian horror filmmakers like Umberto Lenzi, Ruggero Deodato, and Joe D’Amato. But as the Video Nasty craze came and went and time evolved the genre, so did the depiction of cannibalism.
The ’90s brought horror’s most common depiction of cannibals out of the jungle and into society, largely thanks to The Silence of the Lambs’ Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). The Academy Award-winning feature adapted Thomas Harris’ 1988 novel and introduced a supporting character so fascinating that he overshadowed the film’s actual antagonist, Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine). Protagonist Clarice Starling gets assigned to interview the incarcerated cannibalistic serial killer in the hopes that Dr.

To say that remakes suck is very easy to say. There are plenty of examples to show just how classics should not be touched. Remakes have their place in the world of film though, and help new people discover films they never knew existed. Then a movie comes along like Wrong Turn that makes the brave step of being different and being surprisingly good.
A group of friends hiking on the Appalachian Trail take a wrong turn and find themselves in trouble. A few week later one of the friend’s fathers takes the same trail to find out what happened to her…
My synopsis of the film is brief and not highly informative for a point, and that is that this is a movie you really need to go into cold.

I never thought I would miss those inbred hillbilly freaks as much as I do right now…
Back in 2003, director Rob Schmidt and writer Alan B. McElroy dropped Wrong Turn on the world and took the “lost in the woods” horror drama to the next level. Introducing us to Three-Fingers, Saw-Tooth and One-Eye, West Virginia’s newest favorite family. Wrong Turn would also cement Eliza Dushku and Desmond Harrington as would be stars. I, honestly, bloody love that first movie and found it genuinely scary at the time, yeah it spawned about seven hundred and thirty three sequels that all pretty much sucked in comparison but they have remained a guilty pleasure in part due to my love of that original movie.

It will be news to most that Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort was released back in 2014. The cannibal caper was so exhausted that just one critic slated it on Rotten Tomatoes – no one else could be bothered. It appeared to be the series’ swan song, adding a final 90 minutes to what had become a slideshow of murder, with characters and narrative a total afterthought. Instead, the filmmakers explored what it looks like when you drill someone’s torso with a garden auger, or how much blood sprays when you run them over with a snow blower. For Wrong Turn 6, director Valeri Milev made his mark on the oeuvre by showing what happens when you perform a colonoscopy with a fire hose, riffing on the petrol pump meets human esophagus moment in 2011’s Inbred.
What next for a series that has done it all? To continue killing people with garden tools...

"Descendants of these people are still living up their on the mountain?" Signature Entertainment in the UK has released a new UK trailer for the backwoods horror thriller titled Wrong Turn, from filmmaker Mike P. Nelson. We featured the full US trailer a month ago. Technically speaking, this is actually the seventh film in the Wrong Turn franchise, despite the same title. This time around, friends hiking the Appalachian Trail are confronted by "The Foundation", a cult community of killers who have lived in the mountains for hundreds of years. Suddenly under siege, Jen and her group of friends seem headed right to the point of no return. Starring Charlotte Vega, Adain Bradley, Bill Sage, Emma Dumont, Dylan McTee, Daisy Head, Tim DeZarn, as well as Matthew Modine. This is a much better trailer than the other one, way more intense and more footage of the freaky stuff that happens in the woods.

After 18 years, the Wrong Turn franchise returns to theaters for one night only later this month. 2003’s cult classic starring Eliza Dushku spawned a total of five straight-to-dvd sequels over the next decade or so, with the last one coming out in 2014. Now, the horror series is being rebooted with 2021’s simply titled Wrong Turn, featuring an all-new cast and an all-new threat but some familiar hallmarks from earlier films.

"We don't bother them, and they don't bother us." Saban Films has released an official trailer for an indie backwoods horror thriller titled Wrong Turn, from filmmaker Mike P. Nelson. Not to be confused with an entirely separate horror franchise also known as Wrong Turn - though this is actually the seventh film in that very franchise. The original title is Wrong Turn: The Foundation, but they went with that trend of "let's just use the title of the original film all over again." This time around, friends hiking the Appalachian Trail are confronted by "The Foundation", a community of killers who have lived in the mountains for hundreds of years. Since the first one came out in 2003, we've seen six movies released in the Wrong Turn franchise (with Joe Lynch's Wrong Turn 2: Dead End still one of my favorite horror sequels ever), and early next year the cannibal franchise will be rebooted with a new Wrong Turn, which is teased in its official trailer ahead of its January release.
Directed by Mike P. Nelson from a screenplay by Alan B. McElroy (writer of 2003's Wrong Turn), the new Wrong Turn stars Charlotte Vega, Adain Bradley, Bill Sage, Emma Dumont, Dylan McTee, Daisy Head, Tim DeZarn, and Matthew Modine.

Saban Films has acquired the rights to two titles from Munich-based “Resident Evil” producer Constantin Film.
The deals include North American and U.K. rights to the adventure thriller “Tides,” directed by Tim Fehlbaum, and North American rights to director Mike P. Nelson’s anticipated horror reboot, “Wrong Turn.”
Mister Smith Entertainment is handling worldwide sales on both Constantin titles this week at the virtual American Film Market, where the titles will be screening for buyers.
“Tides” marks the second film from Swiss-born director Fehlbaum, who burst to attention with his debut feature “Hell,” another sci-fi thriller.
Set in a not-too-distant future, “Tides” follows an elite female astronaut from Space Colony Kepler who is shipwrecked on a decimated Earth after a global catastrophe has wiped out nearly all of humanity. She must make a decision that will seal the fate of the Earth’s populace.

Noah Segan has been popping up everywhere over the last year. He appeared in Knives Out in a scene-stealing role, he also recently directed a segment in the horror anthology Scare Package, and now he’s playing a cowboy who must take on a coven of witches for Aaron B. Koontz’s The Pale Door, which heads to theaters this weekend and will also be available to stream on VOD and Digital Platforms as well, courtesy of Rlje Films and Shudder.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Segan about his involvement with The Pale Door, and he discussed his experiences collaborating with both Koontz as well as his fellow co-stars, the fun of getting to transform himself into a cowboy and how he hopes to add the title of “feature film director” to his resume in 2021.

The Pale Door will be in theaters and on Demand and Digital August 21, 2020
Review by Stephen Tronicek
When you try to attack a genre piece, especially a Western, on a low-budget the story and characters have to do a lot of the heavy lifting. Sure the costumes might look stagey and the frame a little too clean for the period, but at least there’s a good theme to hold onto. The Pale Door, directed by Aaron B. Koontz (Camera Obscura), unfortunately doesn’t quite get there. While it has a few good performances and spirit to spare, it doesn’t have the story to rise above it’s lower budget trappings.
The Pale Door could be best described as a horror/Western. It’s a film about a group of outlaws, including brothers Jake and Duncan, who fail to rob a train and end up in the clutches of a mysterious whorehouse.

"I understand there was a reward?" Rlje / Shudder has released the first trailer for a horror western titled The Pale Door, the latest bloody offering from Camera Obscura director Aaron B. Koontz. After a train robbery goes bad, two brothers leading a gang of cowboys must survive the night in a ghost town inhabited by a coven of witches. This is a hell of a setup and a hell of a freaky reveal once they get to this brothel and discover what's going on. Starring Devin Druid, Zachary Knighton, Bill Sage, Pat Healy, Natasha Bassett, with Stan Shaw and Melora Walters. At first glance this reminds me of From Dusk Till Dawn, trapped in one saloon fighting off nasty demons. The witches crawling all over the ceiling are frickin' scary. "How often do you have these dinners?" Historia Films has debuted an official promo trailer for an indie horror film titled The Dinner Party, the latest horror creation from Mississippi native filmmaker / actor Miles Doleac. A budding playwright and his wife attend a dinner party hosted by wealthy, cultural elites, who've promised to bankroll his latest play to Broadway, but, in fact, have darker designs in mind for the couple. Sounds a bit too much like The Invitation, mixed with Ready or Not. This stars Bill Sage, Lindsay Anne Williams, Jeremy London, Mike Mayhall, Alli Hart, Ritchie Montgomery, and Doleac. It looks especially bland, but still might entice a few horror fans. A sort of “After Hours” update with a lot more drugs and time ellipses, “The Wave” throws Justin Long down a rabbit’s hole of sometimes hallucinatory, sometimes mortal peril when his button-down protagonist makes the mistake of celebrating a career breakthrough a little too adventurously. This surreal comedy from debuting feature director Gille Klabin and writer Carl W. Lucas offers a colorfully diverting ride that invokes the specter of everything from “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” to “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
What it doesn’t quite have is the singularity of vision those and other movies had in putting their protagonists through some mind-expanding changes, whether induced psychedelically or supernaturally. This fever dream feels more derivative than distinctive, entertaining and eventful as it is. Still, it’s a well-cast, well-crafted stab at something offbeat that should find a modest but appreciative viewership in limited theatrical release (simultaneous with VOD launch) on Jan.

Updated: On New Year’s Day, Deadline wrote about the plight of director Hal Hartley, who had till Saturday to raise $92,000 to be able to make his next film, Where To Land. He sought to raise the money through Kickstarter, which is how he has funded five previous modestly budget films. Well, he’s now six for six. Hartley’s film passed the $300,000 minimum threshold, with one day to spare. Good for Deadline readers, who surely helped his cause and start off the year knowing a worthy indie filmmaker is still in business.

Independent movie maverick Hal Hartley is once again turning to grassroots fundraising for his next film project, “Where to Land.” Hartley is currently seeking $300,000 on Kickstarter to fund the production, which will be anchored by Edie Falco in the lead, and the filmmaker and his team at Possible Films have until Saturday, January 4 to reach the goal. At the time of publication, he’s reached $266,440, which means he $33,560 to go. The film will also star Bill Sage, Tatiana Abracos, Robert Burke, Jade Golden, Aida Johannes, Elina Löwensohn, DJ Mendel, Parker Posey, and Jay Thomas.
The film tells the story of a 58-year-old director of romantic comedies (not unlike 60-year-old filmmaker Hartley himself) looking back on his life, and looking to become the assistant groundskeeper at a local cemetery. Hartley, whose oeuvre includes quirky, offbeat character studies like “Trust” and “Fay Grim,” has always worked on a smaller scale.

"The universe is trying to tell you something - pay attention!" Oh yeah - take a big hit of this! Epic Pictures has debuted a full-length official trailer for a wacky, mesmerizing psychedelic thriller titled The Wave, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Gille Klabin. This already premiered at Fantastic Fest and Screamfest this year, and will be available on VOD in January. Justin Long plays a man on the verge of a promotion takes a mysterious hallucinogenic drug that begins to tear down his reality and expose his life for what it really is. Seems to be a psychedelic parable about capitalism and the rat race we're all sucked into, a bit like Sorry to Bother You but way, way trippier. The full cast also includes Donald Faison, Tommy Flanagan, Sheila Vand, Katia Winter, Ronnie Gene Blevins, and Bill Sage. Uh yeah, so this looks damn good! Really want to see it,...

The Wrong Turn franchise hasn’t ever been a well respected horror series, but it has shown itself to be pretty sustainable over the years, delivering a total of six films between 2003 and 2014. Now, the carnage will continue with yet another outing currently in production.

Mike P. Nelson, director of the acclaimed post-apocalyptic thriller The Domestics, will be behind the camera and in what may sound like a familiar premise, the movie will feature a group of friends who embark on a hiking trip through the Appalachian Trail.
It’s here that they come into contact with “The Foundation,” a community who’ve been residing in the mountains for many decades and these...

"How long until this stuff is supposed to kick in?" Epic Pictures has unveiled the first teaser trailer for an intriguing new psychedelic thriller titled The Wave, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Gille Klabin. This film is premiering at Fantastic Fest coming up, hence the new trailer just in time for its debut down in Austin, TX. The full cast includes Donald Faison, Tommy Flanagan, Sheila Vand, Katia Winter, Ronnie Gene Blevins, and Bill Sage. I am sucker for business world parables like this, and this one looks mad wild and seriously messed up.
