Exclusive: Emmy Award-winner Tammy Blanchard has been cast in FX’s American Sports Story, the new FX anthology limited series from creator Stu Zicherman, in a series regular role, sources tell Deadline.
American Sports Story, a new extension of Ryan Murphy’s “American Story” franchise, focuses on a prominent event involving a sports figure and re-examines it through the prism of today’s world, telling that story from multiple perspectives.
The first installment charts the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez, played by Josh Andrés Rivera, and explores the connections of the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide and his legacy in sports and American culture. Season 1 is based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc. and hails from the Boston Globe and Wondery.
Blanchard will portray the mother of the disgraced football star and convicted murderer, Terri Hernandez, we hear.

It’s early afternoon on a Friday when Darren Criss and Evan Rachel Wood pick up the phone, just five days before they are set to debut as the new Seymour and Audrey in off-Broadway’s Little Shop of Horrors.
Both are on their way to the Westside Theatre stage for their first top-to-bottom run-through, taking over the complicated but beloved characters based on Roger Corman’s 1960 horror comedy and deftly adapted for the stage by theater legends Howard Ashman (book and lyrics) and Alan Menken (music).
Now in the fifth year of the U.S. revival of the dark goings-on of a Skid Row flower shop, several notable names have left their mark on the show: Jonathan Groff, Jeremy Jordan, Conrad Ricamora, Corbin Bleu, Constance Wu, Maude Apatow, Tammy Blanchard and Lena Hall. But none quite like this, as an intentional leap together among friends.

We’ve all got that friend. The one who convinces us to push our boundaries or take that crazy risk, even though we have a hunch we’ll probably get hurt. They’re exciting, they’re cool, maybe even supportive, but they tend to lead us down the road to trouble, only to duck out when the consequences roll around. Film has a long history of these toxic troublemakers. Looking back, the Horror/Thriller genre was practically built on the backs of these smiling devils, who lure us in with their fun-loving wiles, then lead us off the side of a cliff.

Horror doesn’t always have to be jump scare after jump scare or a non-stop gore fest. It doesn’t have to have Aliens, Terminators, or Predators to say nothing of any of the other monsters we’ve seen over the years. Movies that don’t include those coveted horror checklists typically get lumped into the thriller category like Silence of the Lambs or even Get Out. Funny how those are the movies that the Globes and Oscars want to award. Without a shadow of a doubt horror films that can be labeled something a little more friendly to draw more audience demographics or get better ink in reviews. I’m here...

Two of the most enigmatic actresses of our time, Elle Fanning and Sarah Paulson, will lead Mirrah Foulkes’ new film project, I Am Sybil. Foulkes directs from a script she co-wrote with Jen Silverman, recreating the true story of Sybil, one of the first widely recognized cases of dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder).
Sybil was the name given to Shirley Mason, who, in a study conducted by Flora Rheta Schreiber, examined Mason’s treatment for Mpd by psychologist Connie Wilbur. The forthcoming film draws inspiration from Debbie Nathan‘s 2011 novel Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case, examining flaws in Schreiber’s findings.

The legendary Judy Garland, one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century, would have turned 100 on June 10, 2022. To celebrate her career, tour our photo gallery looking back at her greatest film performances.
Known as the little girl (she was only 4’11) with the big voice, Garland was a rare true triple threat, holding her own with such great dancers as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, twice receiving Oscar nominations in acting categories, as well as leaving behind a legacy of record-breaking concerts, a Grammy-winning gold album and recordings of iconic songs that no one else has ever been able to capture in quite the same way.
Born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, 1922, in Grand Rapids Minnesota, Garland was the youngest of three girls. They would eventually form the vaudeville act “The Gumm Sisters” when baby Frances was only two years old. After almost a decade of touring with her sisters,...

It’s not every day that your podcast hits 200 episodes or gets a brand new logo, so it’s been a big week for Trace and me over at Horror Queers.
We’ve had an incredibly busy October on the pod, what with an extended conversation with Don Mancini about the last 30+ years of the Chucky franchise, a discussion about biphobia and Paul Verhoeven’s classic Erotic Thriller Basic Instinct, and our (now annual) check-in on David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy, Halloween Kills.
For our 200th episode, we wanted a special, perfect 5-star film, so we knew we had to go with Karyn Kusama‘s The Invitation (2015). In the film, grieving Will (Logan Marshall-Green) and his new girlfriend Kira (Emayatzy Corinealdi) attend a dinner in the Hollywood Hills at the behest of his ex, Eden (Tammy Blanchard) and her new boyfriend, David (Michiel Huisman).

During the last two decades of her life, Judy Garland appeared as herself on over 40 TV programs and earned a pair of Emmy nominations as the star of her eponymous single-season variety show. 32 years after her untimely death, she was portrayed by Tammy Blanchard (24) and Judy Davis (45) in the ABC limited series “Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows,” which racked up 13 Emmy bids. Both actresses were honored for their work, with Blanchard triumphing in the Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress category and Davis prevailing as the series lead.
20 years after her win, Blanchard remains the fourth youngest victor in the history of her category, and she currently ranks as its 10th youngest nominee after initially placing ninth. Two of the actresses who place higher on the list earned their bids prior to turning 17, with one having held the overall record for youngest acting winner for nearly four decades.

When the 2022 Emmy nominations were announced, Sydney Sweeney joined an elite group of 24 individuals who each earned their first two TV academy acting bids in the same year. As a “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus” cast member, she is respectively in the running for both the Best Drama Supporting Actress and Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress prizes. Triumphing in at least one category would make her only the fourth doubly-nominated female first-timer to pull off a win, after Eileen Brennan (1981: won for “Private Benjamin”; lost for “Taxi”), Jane Lynch (2010: won for “Glee”; lost for “Two and a Half Men”) and Ann Dowd (2017: won for “The Handmaid’s Tale”; lost for “The Leftovers”).

Crystal, Ronette, and Chiffon, the doo-wop chorus of Little Shop, are still a major highlight
The October 2019 Off Broadway revival of the singular scifi-horror-comedy-whatsit musical Little Shop of Horrors is still going strong at the West Side Theater in NYC. Well, minus 18 months off for the pandemic of course. The production has been through five Seymours now in its run with a fifth on the way; Rob McClure takes over on July 12th so this is your last chance to see Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) in the role. Curiously its original Audrey (Emmy winner and Tony nominee Tammy Blanchard) and Orin (Tony winner Christian Borle) are still recycling their sadomasochistic relationship every night in this iteration of Skid Row. Why can't the show keep a Seymour!

Exclusive: Rob McClure, the actor Tony-nominated for his performance in the title role of the recently closed Mrs. Doubtfire, will make another quick costume change, this time for the lead in the Off Broadway hit revival of Little Shop of Horrors.

The casting was announced today by Little Shop producers Tom Kirdahy, Robert Ahrens and Hunter Arnold.
McClure has starred in such Broadway productions as Beetlejuice, Something Rotten, Noises Off and Chaplin, and most recently in the title role of Mrs. Doubtfire. Seeing a Woody Allen movie in 2022 is, it seems fair to say, a curious experience. Those who believe you can’t separate the art from the artist will find copious proof in his latest movie, “Rifkin’s Festival.” But, of course, they’re unlikely to watch it. Those who still celebrate the artist might watch it, but they won’t find much in the way of art.
For his 49th feature film, Allen returns to a well that is not so much dry as desiccated. The movie opens with Wallace Shawn as our Allen doppelgänger, Mort Rifkin. Mort, an anxious former professor, is also a dedicated cinephile and self-defined intellectual who spends the next hour-and-a-half complaining vociferously to his analyst.
He’s reminiscing about a troubled trip to Spain’s San Sebastián Film Festival, which he recently took with his publicist wife, Sue (Gina Gershon). “Film festivals are no longer what they were,...

Robert Allan Ackerman, the director whose television work scored five Emmy nominations and who directed acclaimed Broadway productions including Bent and Extremities, died Jan. 10 of kidney failure at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He was 77.
His death was announced by family through a spokesman.

He understood the language of theater art and communicated it with such ease. His gift was intangible and there’s no way of understanding how he created. When an artist has that special gift it is unexplainable, it just happens. When he stopped directing, he started writing again and his writing also had that same magic. He will be missed.”

It presents some of the world’s most brilliant researchers approaching consciousness – each from radically different perspectives, including Roland Griffiths, the renowned Johns Hopkins University psychedelics researcher, plant biologist Monica Gagliano, Christof Koch, Chief Scientist of the Allen Institute for Brain Science, and the famed Tibetan Buddhist monks, Matthieu Ricard and Mingyur Rinpoche.
The film opens as a science film but emerges well beyond the explicable, ultimately leading one on a voyage upon the ocean of consciousness, a contemplative, sensual, cinematographic meditation. The networks of consciousness are reflected in ‘grand’ imagery revealing the vast interconnectedness of Nature – from the smallest organisms, to...

The theater industry’s pandemic-shortened season seems to have opened up the Grammy playing field for cast albums, as only two of the six just-announced nominees for the 2021 awards represent the usually-dominant Broadway.
The two Broadway cast albums included in today’s nominations for Best Musical Theater Album are David Byrne’s American Utopia on Broadway and Jagged Little Pill, the musical consisting of Alanis Morissette songs. Two London cast albums were nominated, as were two from Off Broadway.
Last year, all five nominees in the category were Broadway productions (Hadestown won), while the year before Broadway accounted for four of the five nominees, with TV’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert filling out the category (Broadway’s The Band’s Visit won). Previous years show a similar pro-Broadway pattern.

We need Mr. Rogers now more than ever. One look at the news not only confirms that, but can easily lead to despair. Last May, when I gave a rave review to the biographical documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, I included this notion on social media: “Television gave us the Kardashians and Trump, but it also gave us Fred Rogers.” The yin to the yang that is the awfulness in this world, Rogers has a special and unsullied place in our culture. To capture him in a narrative film would take an incredibly soft touch. Not every filmmaker could do it. Luckily, everyone involved in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was more than up to the task. In just a few days, you’ll all be able to see just how amazing it is. This is one of the year’s very best works. The film is a drama,...

"He's just about the nicest person I've ever met. I just don't know if he's for real..." Sony has debuted a new "international" trailer for the wonderfully uplifting A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which stars Tom Hanks as the beloved Fred Rogers from the TV show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood". The film is directed by the exceptionally talented Marielle Heller and is a follow-up to the excellent documentary about Mr. Rogers, Won't You Be My Neighbor?. The story focuses on Rogers' relationship with Tom Junod, played by Matthew Rhys, a cynical journalist who is assigned a profile of Fred and learns about empathy, kindness, and decency during his time with him. The film's cast includes Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Cooper, Enrico Colantoni, Maryann Plunkett, Tammy Blanchard, Wendy Makkena, Sakina Jaffrey, & Carmen Cusack. This looks so delightful, so inspiring, and I can't wait to see it. Seems to be ...

‘Little Shop Of Horrors’ Review: Jonathan Groff, Tammy Blanchard Bring The Off-Broadway Classic Home
Little Shop of Horrors, the once and current Off Broadway marvel, announced in 1982 the arrival of two songwriters – Howard Ashman & Alan Menken – who’d soon expand musical theater boundaries to swallow Hollywood like so much plant food. The musical comes home again (you can’t isn’t in its vocabulary) with Michael Mayer’s delightful production featuring a dream trio of Jonathan Groff, Tammy Blanchard and Christian Borle.
In a staging that feels garden-fresh while honoring everything that made the musical such an invigorating blast nearly 40 years ago, this Little Shop sold out its limited run at the Westside Theatre (Upstairs) before performances began in September, prompting an eight-week extension through Jan. 19 that offers audiences a rare opportunity to see the show on the turf and in the manner that Ashman & Menken must surely have envisioned.

In “American Dreamer,” Jim Gaffigan plays a struggling rideshare driver who gets roped up in a bad situation because he’s trying to provide for his family. And the actor says the movie speaks a lot about society and the American Dream.
“I play a rideshare driver, a guy who is down on his luck, is not doing well even in the rideshare game, so he ends up driving around a drug dealer and then there are a lot of questionable bad decisions,” Gaffigan told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven.
It’s about “capitalism, the gig economy — is it realistic? His approach to fixing things is a very kind of a quick fix, American kind of thing,” he added. “He thinks he’s entitled for things and doesn’t want to take accountability for things. I think every man struggles with that because we’re gorillas — we’re just animals. I...

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, indeed, for Toronto International Film Festival audiences who caught the world premiere of director Marielle Heller’s new film starring Tom Hanks as the beloved Mister Rogers.
Written by “Transparent” scribes Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” centers on the real-life friendship between Fred Rogers (Hanks) and journalist Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys). The cynical writer is forced to take an assignment from Esquire to write a profile on Rogers, but the job turns out to be a surprising one as Rogers’ perspective on life — sunnily documented in Morgan Neville’s 2018 doc “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” — begins to change Vogel. The supporting cast includes Chris Cooper, Susan Kelechi Watson, Enrico Colantoni, Maryann Plunkett, and Tammy Blanchard.
From Eric Kohn’s IndieWire review: “Director Marielle Heller… excels at pulling heartstrings from sturdy foundations, injecting smart and insightful...
