Exclusive: Filipino producer-distributor CreaZion Studios is unveiling a slate of film and TV productions here in Cannes, including Severino: The First Serial Killer, which has Dolly De Leon joining Dennis Trillo in the cast.
Scheduled to start shooting in September, the series tells the true story of Catholic priest Severino Mallari, who predated Jack The Ripper by killing 57 people during the Spanish colonial era of the Philippines.
Trillo is playing Severino, while De Leon will play his mother, in what looks set to be one of her darkest roles yet. Severino believed his mother was bewitched and that he could cure her condition by killing people.
Yam Laranas, known for horror films The Echo and The Road, is directing the series, which has been scripted by Dodo Dayao (Cattleya Killer), Rona Co and Rody Vera (Die Beautiful).

The most narratively straightforward of the 2024 shorts in the Directors’ Factory at the Cannes Film Festival, Silig is also the pick of the bunch. Mamang (Sylvia Sanchez) hasn’t been home for two decades so her old flame Sabina (Lav Diaz regular Angel Aquino) barely recognises her at first.
Mamang has returned for a reason, however, and it’s something she hopes Sabina - who works at a funeral home - can help with. Although Silig is, on the face of it, concerned with saying goodbye, the film by Filipino director Arvin Belarmino and Cambodian filmmaker Lomorpich Rithy - aka YoKi - is as much about embracing life as it is leaving it.
There’s a spark between the women from the start with acting veterans Sanchez and Aquino allowing plenty of chemistry to flare between the curmudgeonly Mamang and the more softly spoken Sabina. A trip to the fairground.

The Philippines accounts for four out of five projects selected for the spring 2024 selection of Bangkok-based film fund Purin Pictures, comprising $140,000 in production grants.
The four projects from the Philippines are from directors Mario Cornejo, Arvin Belarmino, Joanne Cesario and Joseph Mangat, with the fifth by Riar Rizaldi from Indonesia.
My Neighbour The Gangster by Cornejo is described as a funny and moving recollection of the filmmaker’s own childhood living next door to the most famous gangster in the Philippines; Ria, by rising director Belarmino, explores the world of Filipino punk; and Invisible Labour, by activist Cesario, addresses the...

“Directors Factory Philippines,” an omnibus film project initiated by the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, has completed production in the historic city of Dapitan.
Operating since 2013, when it kicked off in Taiwan, the Directors’ Factory works with a new partner country each year to mentor eight budding filmmakers who are preparing ambitious first or second feature projects that they will make in pairs. The Philippines was selected in November.
The four resulting co-written and co-directed short films will be screened as part of the Directors’ Fortnight (aka Quinzaine des Cineastes) in May.
Dapitan, a city in The Philippines’ Zamboanga Peninsula, known for its many shrines and as the place of exile of Philippines’ national hero, Jose Rizal. These days it is a hub for domestic and international tourism.
Eve Baswel (Philippines) and Gogularaajan Rajendran (Malaysia) directed the short film “Walay Balay”, the portrait of a mother and daughter, evacuated during wartime to...

Interfilm International Short Film Festival Berlin is back with its 38th edition, running from the 15th to the 20th of November 2022. This year the regional focus will be on the cinematography of the Philippines, while the thematic focus Ghosts of Europe looks towards the EU. Interfilm dedicates also a spotlight program to Belarusian filmmaking, which courageously takes on the current regime.
To use the organisers’ words: “The competitions present themselves as usual politically, combative and at the same time empathetic and full of confidence. Great stories meet abstract animation, essayistic forms meet concrete narration. (…) Interforum is the place to discuss and learn, and various special programs and events round off the week dedicated to short film.“
You can find the full programme on the official website here.
Here are all the Asian titles:
