Though she’s best known for her work in late night TV, Amber Ruffin has taken Broadway by storm over the last couple years, and is set to stage a long gestating musical of her own this summer.
The Late Night With Seth Meyers mainstay and former Amber Ruffin Show host most recently wrote the revised book for the revival of The Wiz, which opened last month on Broadway. She also co-wrote last year’s Broadway run of Some Like It Hot, earning a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical.
Now Ruffin is directing and writing a new musical that will be presented in upstate New York this summer. The show will be workshopped as part of New York Stage and Film’s summer season at Marist College, and is set to be presented on July 21st at the Nelly Goletti Theatre.

Growing up in Omaha, Amber Ruffin didn’t have many role models who looked like her. “I had not seen Black female performances that weren’t a stereotype and honestly, it was a while until it became regular.” Luckily, there were two movies on regular rotation in her home: “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “The Wiz.”
The first started Oscar-winner Whoopi Goldberg, in whose hyphenate shoes Ruffin would follow, becoming an actor, host, writer and comedian. And the latter was the big-screen adaptation of the revolutionary 1974 Broadway musical, a retelling of “The Wizard of Oz” with an all-Black cast and bumping tunes that blended rock, gospel and soul. Says Ruffin of the films, “They were just so specific and weird that it was like an invitation to be yourself. So I had to squeeze all of the belonging out of those two movies and they lasted me well beyond childhood.”

On Wednesday night, Broadway’s Marquis Theatre celebrated the official opening of the highly anticipated revival of The Wiz.
After a successful pre-Broadway tour that began last year, this new production breathes new life into the beloved musical. Under the direction of Schele Williams, known for her work on The Notebook and with choreography by JaQuel Knight, this revival promises an exciting and contemporary take on an enduring classic.
Taking on the iconic role of Dorothy is newcomer Nichelle Lewis, who brings a fresh and vibrant energy to the stage. Joining her is a star-studded cast that includes Wayne Brady as The Wiz, Deborah Cox as Glinda, Melody A. Betts as Aunt Em and Evillene, Kyle Ramar Freeman as the Lion, Phillip Johnson Richardson as the Tinman, and Avery Wilson as the Scarecrow.
The ensemble comprises talented performers, including Allyson Kaye Daniel as Addaperle and Anthony Murphyas Lord High Underling.

Before Dorothy’s mother passed away, she had a favorite saying, as Aunt Em reminds her grieving niece in the opening scene of The Wiz: “The hard stuff is there to let you know just how good you got it.” And while that’s a curious mantra to undergird a production of a Broadway musical, there’s something to it in the latest revival.
The first musical by a Black composer to win Tony Awards for best musical and best score, this well-loved show turns 50 next year. If Schele Williams’s simplistic and sometimes bewildering staging doesn’t itself demonstrate how the show has held up across those decades, she wisely steers all attention toward the main event: the stunning vocal performances from her cast. And since the show’s underwhelming visuals feel like less of a distraction than an afterthought, it’s easy enough to put the “hard...

Jenny Hagel is “obsessed” with giving people advice – whether people ask or not. “I’m sure it’s everybody’s least favorite thing about me, but I can’t stop,” she admits. “It’s like a facial tic, except in my personality.”
While this could be annoying in the hands of a lesser talent, Hagel happens to be a gifted comedian and writer with a talent for showmanship. Case in point, her Emmy-nominated work as a a writer and performer on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” where she is perhaps best known for a recurring segment called “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” with her frequent collaborator Amber Ruffin. Because Ruffin is Black and Hagel is gay, they appear every so often to recite punchlines that are off-limits to the host. Exclusive: Straight to Cards, the production company set up 18 months ago by Amber Ruffin and Jenny Hagel, has upped Justin McGriff.
McGriff, who was a creative executive at the company, which has an overall deal with Universal Television, has been promoted to Vice President.
It comes after Ruffin set up her latest scripted project at Peacock. The Late Night with Seth Meyers writer is developing an adaptation of You’ll Never Believe What Happened To Lacey, the book she wrote with her sister Lacey Lamar, for the streamer.
McGriff is a producer and executive with roots in late-night comedy. Beginning his television career at Late Night with Seth Meyers, where he first met Ruffin and Hagel, McGriff became a supervisor on the show before helping to launch The Amber Ruffin Show in 2020. The best way I can describe the past year is as a year of trend shifts in the film zeitgeist. In a film environment where the most popular discussions often revolved around the never-ending slate of superhero blockbusters (and Martin Scorsese’s opinions on them for some reason), 2023 positioned itself as a time of change in the film industry.
Between the struggles faced by once-dominant cape flicks to break even at the box office and the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes being at the forefront of industry shakeups into awards season, 2023 has been a year of unlikely and/or unusual success stories for off-kilter genre movies.
In 2023 alone, we bore witness to a horror game adaptation outperforming superhero movies from both Marvel and DC, video game movies in general overtaking the conversation surrounding films and of course, the Barbenheimer double feature born from a meme before blossoming into two of the most successful films of the year.

It’s been a strange year for late-night and things are only going to get weirder.
All of the late-night shows were dark between May and October as as a result of the writers strike and the genre lost one of its longer-running shows as The Late Late Show, which has run for over 5,000 episodes since 1995, is to be replaced by an old Comedy Central game show.
The change hasn’t been quite as significant as last year when James Corden and Trevor Noah revealed they’d be stepping down, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new regime killed Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal and Desus & Mero, who, for some, were the duo to reinvigorate the field, broke up.
Late-night, it seems, is just ticking along.

While Tamron Hall is the host of her successful, self-titled daytime talk show “Tamron Hall,” there was a hypothetical world in which she may have been part of the late-night TV landscape. But Hall told TheWrap she’s not convinced that idea would have gotten past network executives.
It’s something Hall thought about earlier on in her career, and one that was suggested to her prior to the launch of her now two-time Emmy-winning talk series.
“I have a former producer at MSNBC who always said, ‘You should be in late night, you should be in late night,'” Hall said. But she also mentioned that she didn’t think there would be as clear of a lane for her to pursue late night in comparison to other on-camera talents who come from a different background.

Exclusive: Amber Ruffin has another scripted project in the works with NBCUniversal.
The comedian, who writes for Late Night with Seth Meyers and hosts The Amber Ruffin Show, has been developing an adaptation of You’ll Never Believe What Happened To Lacey, the book she wrote with her sister Lacey Lamar, for Peacock.
It comes after her last scripted project, her Non-Evil Twin pilot, did not move forward at NBC.
However, NBCUniversal remains keen to work with Ruffin, once the writers and actors strikes have ended. Ruffin and her writing partner Jenny Hagel signed an overall deal with Universal Television last year, through their new production company Straight To Cards.

As Hollywood waits for movement between the WGA and AMPTP, a ray of sunlight emerged for comedy/variety writers in the latest back-and-forth.
Late-night writers, and writers who work on variety shows such as Netflix’s Tim Robinson series I Think You Should Leave, have been fighting for safeguards in streaming.
Back in February, in its Pattern of Demands, the WGA said that it wanted Mba minimums to apply to “comedy variety programs made for new media”.
This has now, seemingly, been settled, as both the WGA and AMPTP confirmed that comedy variety writers on streaming shows, which include Apple’s The Problem with Jon Stewart and Peacock’s The Amber Ruffin Show, will now be covered.
The AMPTP pointed out on Tuesday that for the first time ever, writers for high-budget subscription video-on-demand comedy variety programs will receive the same terms and conditions that apply under Appendix A, which...

Felipe Torres Medina, a writer on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, organized a comedy writers picket outside 30 Rock in New York that saw the cream of the late-night crop turn up to fight for a “fair” deal.
Stars such as John Oliver, Amber Ruffin, Ziwe, Jason Sudeikis and Phoebe Robinson were among those in attendance, as the writer strike is in its 87th day and the actors strike is in its 14th day.
John Oliver, host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, said, “I like what Chris Keyser said yesterday, ‘This isn’t a war, this is a basic request for some completely understandable contract points’ so I want to see a fair deal as soon as possible. It is absolutely appalling that they are not negotiating right now. The fact that they are not around a table right now is absolutely disgusting.”

NBC has canceled its second-year comedy American Auto.
The series, set at a struggling car company, wrapped its second season in April. It was the last scripted show on NBC’s 2022-23 schedule still in limbo; American Auto’s cancellation follows those of Young Rock and Grand Crew a week ago.
NBC has also opted not to go ahead with its lone remaining comedy pilot, Non-Evil Twin, from Amber Ruffin (who also stars) and former Black-ish showrunner Kenny Smith.
Created by Justin Spitzer (Superstore), American Auto follows a group of executives at an automaker who are trying to re-establish the company’s identity in a changing marketplace. Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer, Jon Barinholtz, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo star.
The series averaged 2.32 million viewers and a 0.35 rating among adults 18-49 over seven days of viewing (not including streaming) in 2022-23. Those figures were down 15 percent...

But I don’t like to leave them because, you know, you can’t reheat them, so that means you have to eat all of them.”
Later on, as Ruffin is recalling how important a friend was in helping her realize she shouldn’t make a joke about Joe Biden’s dead dog, she quickly cuts herself off. “Gosh, you know, if I had a little bit more sense, I would think before I spoke, but I don’t so,” she casually acquiesces. Do you remember what you were doing the evening of May 16, 1983? Well, you may have been one of the 47 million people tuned into NBC’s landmark special “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever.”
It was the star-studded celebration hosted by Emmy nominee Richard Pryor which saw Michael Jackson reuniting with his brothers for a medley of their Jackson 5 hits including “I Want You Back,” “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There.”
But it was Jackson’s solo performance of his blockbuster No. 1 hit “Billie Jean” from his breakthrough album “Thriller” which galvanized the audience. It was an electrifying turn where he introduced the fedora, black sequin jacket and glove and his momentous moonwalk routine during the bridge of the song, all of which became his trademarks when performing “Billie Jean.” The New York Times described the routine as “astonishing. “We’re both rowdy and silly so I think it was pretty clear that you could say whatever you wanted and it would be fine,” says Amber Ruffin of working with writing partner Matthew Lopez on “Some Like it Hot.” “We both have really hard feelings to hurt. So we didn’t really have to do any tiptoeing.” The fast chemistry between the pair allowed them to dive headfirst into writing the book for this new musical, the first time either artist had attempted this type of writing. Though the process was challenging, they had a ball bringing this classic story into a contemporary light. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

According to our combined predictions as of this writing, the five who are expected to receive Best Actress in a Musical nominations at this year’s Tony Awards are Victoria Clark (“Kimberly Akimbo”), Annaleigh Ashford (“Sweeney Todd”), Micaela Diamond (“Parade”), Sara Bareilles (“Into the Woods”), and Patina Miller (“Into the Woods”). However, there is a contender I think deserves to be in the conversation much more, and that would be Adrianna Hicks (“Some Like It Hot”).

Welcome back to another review of Aew Dark: Elevation, which features seven matches this week. In a change-up this week, we’ve got Tony Schiavone and Matt Menard on commentary. So let’s get into the review!
Match #1: Action Andretti def. Nick Comoroto

But no, instead Andretti held his own against the big man and there were a number of near falls which amped up the excitement. Eventually Andretti hit a Victory Roll for the 3 count.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: Skye Blue def. Angelica Risk

Exclusive: Dexter Darden (Chang Can Dunk), Chloe Bridges (Maggie) and Robert Buckley (One Tree Hill) have joined the cast of Amber Ruffin and Kenny Smith NBC comedy pilot, Non-Evil Twin.
Darden plays Marcus, a contemporary nerd and tech developer for exercise equipment. He’s a good guy, but no fan of confrontation, which makes it hard for him to do the right thing at times. Bridges plays Robin, the CEO of Dandee Sports Apparel and Angie’s (Ruffin) corporate nemesis. She’s a self-described woman of faith who’s a shark in the boardroom. Buckley plays Samson, Angie’s not-so-bright lawyer who, in addition to providing legal counsel, provides Angie with anything she needs…be it copious amounts of rosé or sex.
The multi-camera pilot stars Ruffin playing the dual roles of twin sisters Angie and Amber. Angie is the ruthless CEO of AngieCorp, who is as heartless as she is rich.

Amber Ruffin, who currently hosts The Amber Ruffin Show on Peacock, is expanding her relationship with NBC, as her comedy pilot, Non-Evil Twin, has been picked up by the network. According to Variety, the late-night host will write and star in the show, which is described as a multi-cam sitcom. It follows a woman who is forced to step into her sister’s role as the leader of a Fortune 500 company, even though she knows very little about business and even less about how her sister had been running the corporation. Ruffin started performing live comedy and improv in 2001, often appearing with The Second City in Denver and Chicago. She has been a writer on Late Night With Seth Meyers since 2014 and appeared on the show in several recurring segments, including “Amber Says What?”, “Amber’s Minute of Fury,” “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell,” and “Point, Counterpoint.” She launched...

Amber Ruffin is plotting a move to primetime.
The host of Peacock’s Amber Ruffin Show and writer and performer on Late Night With Seth Meyers will star in, write and executive produce a comedy pilot called Non-Evil Twin at NBC. Former Black-ish and Kenan showrunner Kenny Smith is writing and exec producing with Ruffin, and Late Night writer-performer Jenny Hagel will also executive produce. Olivia Morris is a co-ep.
Universal Television is behind the project. Ruffin and Hagel (via their Straight to Cards production company) and Smith all have overall deals at the studio.
The multicamera Non-Evil Twin follows a woman (Ruffin) who is forced to step into her sister’s role as the leader of a Fortune 500 company — despite knowing little about business and even less about the way her sister has been running the corporation.
Ruffin has hosted, written and executive produced three seasons of The Amber Ruffin Show on Peacock.

NBC has handed out its latest comedy pilot to Non-Evil Twin, starring and written by Amber Ruffin.
The multi-camera pilot stars Ruffin as a woman who is forced to step in to her sister’s role as the leader of a Fortune 500 company despite knowing little about business and even less about the way her sister has been running the corporation.
It marks the first pilot for Ruffin, who wrote a book — You’ll Never Believe What Happens to Lacey — with her older sister Lacey Lamar, after she and her writing partner Jenny Hagel signed an overall deal with Universal Television, which will produce the potential series via their new production company Straight to Cards.
However, the move comes as Late Night with Seth Meyers writer Ruffin continues to scale back the amount of episodes of her own late-night show, The Amber Ruffin Show.

On Amber Ruffin’s latest segment of “Amber Says What” on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” the comedian responded to Bill Cosby’s plans to go on tour, George Santos lying about his personal life and the recent uproar over Hollywood’s nepo babies and Greta Thunberg’s unintentional takedown of Andrew Tate.
It’s been a jam-packed last couple of weeks for news, and to help cover some of the topics Meyers is unable to touch on, Ruffin steps in with her segment “Amber Says What” to give a brief breakdown.
One of her first topics was about the New York Magazine article “How a Nepo baby Is Born,” which points out a number of celebs and their now-Hollywood successful children.
“So, the way it works is if a famous person has a child, and that child grows up to be famous, they’re a nepo baby. Like Seth,...

On a rainy Sunday afternoon, “Some Like It Hot” opened on Broadway and furnished the Shubert Theater with its most glittering audience in recent memory.
Patti LuPone, Bette Midler, Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Martin Short, Andrea Mitchell, Debra Messing, Uma Thurman, John Stamos, Neil Patrick Harris, Amy Sedaris and many more all filed through Shubert Alley to attend the exciting new stage adaptation of the classic 1959 film comedy.
Starring Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, Natasha Yvette Williams and Adrianna Hicks in Marilyn Monroe’s fabled role, “Some Like It Hot” comes to Broadway as an entirely new musical, not a revival. In a time where intricate, justice-laden plays have the upper hand — and the musical genre struggles to find its footing between the social-theatrical project and camp — “Some Like It Hot” opened on Sunday with an answer for success: The new adaptation reinterprets MGM’s original concept...

Next to the jukebox musical, the Broadway genre getting and usually deserving the least amount of respect is that woebegon Frankenstein that starts life on the big screen only to have its parts jumbled and reassembled for the stage. The failure-to-success ratio of such attempts should keep any sane stage director as far from a movie house as humanly possible.
We’re all fortunate that Casey Nicholaw has ignored any such warnings, and has instead assembled a glorious new Some Like It Hot, a tap-dancing, razzle-dazzling embrace of everything to love about classic American musical theater, Golden Age Hollywood and Broadway talent at the top of their games, all of it crafted with a 21st Century wisdom that knows what’s worth clutching from the past and what insists on a refresh. Some Like It Hot is a delight from start to finish.

Stars are getting back in cars to sing along to some catchy tunes as the second half of Carpool Karaoke: The Series Season 5 kicks off Friday, December 9 on Apple TV+. In celebration of the show’s return, we have an exclusive first look at one of the Carpool combinations as Hillary Clinton, daughter Chelsea Clinton, and comedian Amber Ruffin hit the road. As teased in the sneak peek clip, above, the women are jamming out to a true icon, the late great Aretha Franklin. (Credit: Apple TV+) It shouldn’t be shocking that the song, in particular, is “Respect,” a complete and utter anthem fitting of the trio performing it. As the Clinton women and Ruffin sing at the top of their lungs, they can’t help but let a laugh or two out leading Hillary to speak up. “The money part I’d forgotten. I always remembered the respect part,...

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which features only six matches on the card this week (thankfully I do love a shorter show)… On with the review!
Match #1: Dalton Castle & The Boys def. Justin Corino, Jaden Valo, & Defarge
My Thoughts: Aew roll out the Roh talent once again given that we’re headed towards the Roh: Final Battle pay per view. Its always great seeing Dalton Castle & The Boys in action even if they’re technically squashing their opponents – it’s still glorious seeing them do their stuff!
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: Abadon def. Leva Bates
My Thoughts: Two of Aew’s most under-utilised talents get to go head to head in action and it’s great action too. Honestly, it’s a crying shame that these two don’t get more TV time, even on Aew’s YouTube shows.

Apple TV+’s Gutsy is nothing if not wholesome. Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton are plainly aiming for inspiration and edification with their docuseries interviewing heroes and luminaries from all walks of life, and they tend to find it whether they’re speaking with academics, activists or firefighters. The causes they highlight are largely unobjectionable, at least if your politics roughly align with the Clintons’; their subjects plainly admirable; their stories insistently empowering.
For a certain type of viewer — say, a devoted Clinton fan or a budding feminist in search of role models — it might make for a decent primer on the broad spectrum of issues affecting Americans today, from motherhood to environmentalism to the fight for LGBTQ rights. And its omnivorous interests and impressive access ensure that just about any viewer will be likely to find some segment they’ll connect with over its eight 40-minute episodes.

Seth Meyers was trying to avoid being disappointed in front of his children on Emmy nomination morning, so he went for a run around New York City. He needn’t have worried. For the first time since he took the reins, Late Night with Seth Meyers earned a spot on Emmy’s Outstanding Variety Talk Series ballot.
Perversely, it was the pandemic that helped the former Saturday Night Live star find his groove. Forced to produce his show from the attic of his in-laws’ house for long stretches with only a painting of an old sea captain and worn copy of The Thorn Birds for company, Meyers ditched his suit and tie and took his show, which launched in 2014, to a more relaxed level. Audiences, and evidently Emmy voters, noticed.
Meyers returned to 30 Rock in September 2020, and a studio audience followed just over a year later in October 2021. But he...

It’s Monday morning, so you know what that means… it’s time for our review of Friday night’s episode of Aew: Rampage, which this week emanated from the Dcu Center in Worcester, Ma and marks the return of Aew’s special Fight For the Fallen programming, Let’s get into the review!
Match #1: Chuck Taylor, Orange Cassidy & Trent Beretta def. Jay Lethal, Satnam Singh & Sonjay Dutt The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:
Lethal and Trent began the match for their respective teams. Trent tried for a rollup right away. Lethal went for a rollup but Trent countered for a near fall. Orange Cassidy tagged in and called out Satnam Singh. Instead, Sonjay Dutt tagged in for his team. Sonjay handed his suit jacket to the referee. Orange Cassidy placed his sunglasses on the ref’s face. Orange kicked Sonjay with his trademark “King of Sloth Style” kicks,...

Chucalissa, and The Pynk in particular, are places in transition.
That fact was made abundantly clear on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 8.
The Promised Land casino, Chucalissa, and The Pynk are so intertwined that the outcome of the first will help determine the fate of the last two locations.
So it was little wonder that the mudslinging began in the Chucalissa mayoral race, with Andre the primary victim of it.
Andre brought most of this exposure on himself. In addition to screwing around with ex-stripper-turned-strip-club owner Autumn, he lied about his father being dead instead of being on Death Row for murder.
Andre missed an opportunity there. Indeed, having overcome such a father through his relationship with a new father figure, the late Mayor Ruffin, made for a much better success story.
But Andre also was caught up in the feud between Corbin, his primary financial backer, and the interim mayor, Wayne Kyle.

Full Frontal With Samantha Bee is done at TBS. The cable network has cancelled the late-night series after seven seasons.
“As we continue to shape our new programming strategy, we’ve made some difficult, business-based decisions. Full Frontal With Samantha Bee will not return to TBS,” a network spokesperson tells Deadline. “We are proud to have been the home to Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and thank Sam, and the rest of the Emmy-nominated team for their groundbreaking work. We celebrate this extraordinarily talented cast and crew and look forward to exploring new opportunities to work with them in the future.

Welcome to this week’s review of Aew Dark: Elevation, the opening salvo in the Aew wrestling week. This time around we’ve got Excalibur, Caprice Coleman and Mark Henry on commentary and I’m digging the switch-ups we’ve had on the commentary team in recent weeks… Let’s see what the show has to offer!
Match #1: Bobby Fish def. Blake Li
My Thoughts: This felt very much like Bobby Fish getting back into the swing of things after not being on TV for a few weeks. Other than that this was your typical Aew quasi-squash match.
My Score: 1.5 out of 5 Match #2: Marina Shafir and Nyla Rose def. Skye Blue and Brittany
My Thoughts: Another squash match for this week’s Elevation, but one that makes sense given that Rose and Shfir are supposed to be the dominant team and Skye Blue is the underdog. Speaking of Shafir,...

Another episode of Aew: Dark, which this week is once again being taped at Aew Universal. We join Taz and Excalibur, commentators for Dark as usual, for eight matches and what looks, on paper, like a stacked card!
Match #1: Lee Moriarty def. Leon Ruffin
My Thoughts: Got to love a match that features two great wrestlers like Moriarty and Ruffin. This one could’ve done with a more animated and excited audience – or one that was more interested in Wrestling rather than high-flying or comedy antics. Other than that this was a solid affair with two guys who looked like they were determined to put on a great wrestling match.
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: Bear Country def. Adrian Alanis & Liam Gray
My Thoughts: I always love seeing Bear Country in action on Aew programming, it’s just a shame that they don’t seem to be on...

At the top of each of their late-night shows, hosts James Corden, Seth Meyers and Trevor Noah took a moment to address the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.
In a taping filmed outside the U.K. Parliament, the Late Late Show’s Corden reacted to the Supreme Court ruling, first reflecting on how abortion was legalized in the U.K. in 1967. Corden noted that it would take nearly 800 elected officials and appointees to change the legalization of abortion in the U.K. and agree that “the fundamental rights of half the population would be endangered in the United Kingdom.”
Corden went on to further address the “heart-wrenching and frightening news.”
“For the past eight years, I’ve been living, working and raising my young family in America. It’s a place I love.
