Although some advise against working with animals, Will Smith is fondly remembering his time with man’s best co-star.
The Academy Award winner reminisced about his canine scene partner Abbey from the 2007 movie I Am Legend being “a brilliant actress” as he admitted to trying to adopt the German Shepherd, who was known for upstaging him in the blockbuster.
“It was like Abbey spoke English. … Like, she literally could understand you, it was the weirdest thing,” recalled Smith on the latest episode of Hot Ones.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to take Abbey home as she “was the breadwinner of her family, and she had to stay,” Smith told host Sean Evans.
Loosely based on the 1954 novel by Richard Matheson, Smith starred in I Am Legend as US Army virologist Robert Neville, who’s the last living human in New York, which has been overrun by nocturnal mutants. While trying...

Michael B Jordan, who’s set to co-star alongside Will Smith in I Am Legend 2, says that work on the sci-fi horror sequel is still ongoing.
Every now and again, somebody famous pops up to reassure the media that I Am Legend 2 is still happening. This time, it’s co-star Michael B Jordan’s turn: he’s said that the sci-fi horror sequel is “something that’s in the works,” but adds hints that it could be a while before it goes into production.
Talking to People magazine (via The Hollywood Reporter), Jordan said, “We’re still working on the script and getting that up to par,” and added that “It doesn’t have a release date or anything like that. Michael B. Jordan recently told People that the script for “I Am Legend 2” is still being written and he’s currently not privy to any filming start date at this time. A sequel to Will Smith’s 2007 blockbuster was first announced in March 2022, with Smith set to return opposite new cast member Jordan. Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote “I Am Legend” with Mark Protosevich, was back to pen the sequel’s script.
“We’re still working on the script and getting that up to par,” Jordan told People. “It doesn’t have a release date or anything like that. I’m not sure exactly where we’re going to be filming that one, but I’m really excited to get in front of the camera with him. Being somebody that I’ve looked up to for a really long time, to be able to work with Will is something I’m really looking forward to.

Francis Lawrence's 2007 post-apocalyptic drama "I Am Legend" is based loosely on the celebrated 1954 novel by Richard Matheson. The original novel is set in the near future of 1976 when a destructive war has ravaged the Earth, and a horrible virus has infected the survivors. The virus transforms its victims into pale-skinned, nocturnal ghouls with an appetite for human blood, more or less making them vampires. The novel follows Robert Neville, seemingly the last human alive, as he tries to survive in a ravaged Los Angeles and study the virus during the daylight hours. The title comes from the novel's famous twist ending.
"I Am Legend" was adapted to film in 1964 as "The Last Man on Earth," and in 1971 as "The Omega Man," before Lawrence's 2007 version. Lawrence's version transposes the action to New York and makes Neville (Will Smith) into a surviving virologist attempting to come up with a cure for the vampire virus.
