In recent years, a number of yesteryear’s franchises have been revitalized as sequels or prequels, and many of them couldn’t measure up to the present pop culture showbiz. However, Bad Boys, the buddy cop comedy franchise created by Michael Bay in the mid-90s, is an exception, as the series made a roaring comeback in 2020 with its third installment, Bad Boys for Life. With equal parts heart, humor, drama, and action, the movie opened up a way to take the franchise in a new direction, even with or without the lead detective duo played by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
The direct sequel to the movie and the overall fourth entry in the series, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, is a comparatively milder, more cautious, and more topical entry, which, although having a decent enough plotline as its backbone, falls short in the action and humor department. However,...

The fourth installment in the beloved action-comedy franchise, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, showcases the dynamic duo of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprising their iconic roles as Miami detectives, Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett. Filming took place at the Miami waterfront, providing a picturesque yet gritty backdrop for the movie’s high-octane sequences. The story revolves around the fight to clear the tarnished legacy of Captain Conrad Howard, portrayed by Joe Pantoliano, who is posthumously framed as an informant for a Mexican drug cartel. As our star detectives set out to clear their captain’s name, they manage to mix in...

Although some advise against working with animals, Will Smith is fondly remembering his time with man’s best co-star.
The Academy Award winner reminisced about his canine scene partner Abbey from the 2007 movie I Am Legend being “a brilliant actress” as he admitted to trying to adopt the German Shepherd, who was known for upstaging him in the blockbuster.
“It was like Abbey spoke English. … Like, she literally could understand you, it was the weirdest thing,” recalled Smith on the latest episode of Hot Ones.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to take Abbey home as she “was the breadwinner of her family, and she had to stay,” Smith told host Sean Evans.
Loosely based on the 1954 novel by Richard Matheson, Smith starred in I Am Legend as US Army virologist Robert Neville, who’s the last living human in New York, which has been overrun by nocturnal mutants. While trying...

Will Smith snuck into a Los Angeles movie theater on Friday night to watch his new movie, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, alongside a paying audience.
The actor documented his night out on social media.
“We’re in Baldwin Hills. We’re about to go in the theater,” Smith says in the video of his theatrical visit. “It’s a ritual I have, when I have a movie come out. On Friday, Saturday, usually a matinee on Sunday, I like going to the theaters.”
Smith is then shown sporting a mask while watching his film with fans.
After the movie ended, Smith revealed to shocked moviegoers that he had been watching the film with them. A growing crowd seemed excited to see Smith and captured photos and videos. One fan gave the movie a “10 out of 10” and Smith thanked him.

Will Smith took a real punch while filming the 2001’s Ali under the direction of Michael Mann. I was leaning back and my trainer was trying to get me to get the angle of my spine forward. And in this second I just was like, you know, ‘Commit!’ And I committed and leaned forward, and almost as an instinctual reaction, Michael Bentt threw a right hand. I saw it coming at the last second and I put my head down, and he caught me with a right hand right on top of my head, but it didn’t knock my head...

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is the fourth installment of the iconic series, bringing back familiar faces like Will Smith and Martin Lawrence who continue to portray Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett. Same old explosive action Once again, the narrative centers around high-octane action sequences mixed with comedic interludes. However, this time it doesn’t seem to bring anything new to the table. The pair face a challenging scenario following the death of their longtime captain, Conrad Howard. A video message from Howard, played by Joe Pantoliano, leaves them reeling, suggesting his death was not natural. The red carpet...

In case you hadn't heard, the summer 2024 box office has been bad. Really, really, really, ridiculously bad. And when a situation is this bad, you need some bad boys to ride in and fix it -- or die trying. As luck would have it, "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" arrived in theaters this weekend, bringing with it the oxygen mask of an estimated $53 million opening weekend. The fourth movie in the action-comedy series starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence brought in $21.6 million on Friday, including $5.9 million from Thursday previews, which puts it on track to slightly outperform early projections (per The Hollywood Reporter).
That number isn't far behind the $61 million debut of "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" during this same weekend a year ago. Under ordinary circumstances, a $53 million opening weekend wouldn't be considered one of the high points of the summer box office, where movies will frequently open north of the $100 million mark.

Bad Boys, Bad Boys, watcha gonna do? Watcha gonna do when they come for you?
It’s hard to believe, but we’ve only gotten four Bad Boys movies despite it being an almost thirty-year-old franchise. With Will Smith’s stardom reaching truly epic levels, he never really had time to become a “franchise” guy outside of Men in Black (which he eventually left as well), which, in some ways, has been a blessing to this buddy cop series. While audiences are a bit sick of franchises that crank out movie after movie, the Bad Boys films are still pretty fresh, so when they return occasionally, audiences are happy to see them (with the series showing no signs of waning). But, of the movies, which rule the roost as the best of the best? Let’s take a look with our Bad Boys movies ranked list!

The boys are back in town. Sony and Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” got off to a solid start at the box office with $21.6 million from 3,885 locations across Friday and preview screenings. The movie also gets a revenue boost from Imax and other premium large format auditoriums.
The action sequel, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is now looking at an opening of $53 million through the three-day frame in North America. Sony had initially projected a debut of $30 million heading into the weekend, going way below industry estimates of $45 million to $50 million. The studio seems to have made a cautious lowball, considering “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” have given the summer box office a run of high-profile titles debuting below expectations.

If early weekend estimates are correct, Sony’s buddy action comedy Bad Boys: Ride or Die could help jolt the battered summer office back to life with a domestic box opening of $53 million. Moreover, it could help put Smith on the road to a career comeback after the infamous Oscars slap, which was seemingly addressed in the film.
Bad Boys 4, reuniting Smith with Martin Lawrence in the fourth outing of Sony’s long-running franchise, earned generally positive reviews and, perhaps more importantly, an A- CinemaScore. Black moviegoers made up the largest quadrant of the audience with 44 percent.
Friday’s haul of $21.6 million included $5.9 million in Thursday night previews. Ride or Die is arguably the first film of the summer to come in ahead of tracking, which had it opening to $48 million to $50 million. It’s also the second biggest behind Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Early Saturday Am Writethru: More great news, knock on wood, that the marketplace is rebounding – a bit. Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die secured $21.6M yesterday on its way to a $53M opening. Some even have it a tad higher at $54M at 3,885 theaters. While that’s what tracking saw three weeks ago, the sour market poured cold water on those prospects. Turns out, initial tracking was right. This is all according to early Am estimates.
Updated Screen Engine/PostTrak exits are 5 stars, 90% positive, and a great 84% definite recommend with a 97% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and an A- CinemaScore (the previous three movies all received As).
Bad Boys for Life drew 58% under 35, with 42% Black moviegoers, 30% Caucasian, 18% Hispanic and Latino and 10% Asian American/other. The fourthquel, also produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, showed 50% under 35 with 44% Black, 26% Hispanic and Latino, 18% Caucasian and 12% Asian American/other buying tickets.

Over the last few weeks, box office pundits have debated whether Bad Boys: Ride or Die had the makings of a box office hit. The predictions have been all over the place, with some thinking it would open similarly to The Fall Guy and Furiosa with $30 million, while others thought it could hit $50 million (we predicted $40 million). According to Deadline’s early box office figures, the movie is opening above expectations with an estimated $52 million over the weekend. While that’s about $10 million shy of what Bad Boys For Life made, let’s not forget that the film opened before the pandemic, at a time when movie theatre attendance was a lot healthier than it is now. A $52 million start is a major success for Sony, with it arguably the first major money maker of the summer.

There have been tentative plans for I Am Legend 2 for at least the past few years. As far as we're aware, the idea is for Will Smith to return to the sci-fi/horror franchise alongside Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan in what will likely serve as a passing of the torch, leaving the latter to lead a new series of movies.
Last year's Hollywood strikes delayed the project and, the year before those began, so did Smith's now-infamous "slap" at the 2022 Academy Awards.
I Am Legend 2 had only been announced days before, so it's no real wonder the sequel's momentum has slowed.
Talking to People (via SFFGazette.com), Jordan offered an update on where things stand with the movie. "We're still working on the script and getting that up to par," he said. "It doesn't have a release date or anything like that. I'm not...

In January 2020, Adil and Bilall began to ride high. The Belgian directing duo’s American debut, Bad Boys for Life, set a franchise record with $424 million, becoming the highest grossing domestic film of the pandemic-stricken year. That fall, they joined the MCU’s Ms. Marvel and helmed the first two episodes of Kamala Khan’s coming-of-age superhero series. Led by Iman Vellani, the Disney+ show would eventually garner critical acclaim, especially Adil and Bilall’s outings, which added some much-welcomed visual flourishes to Earth-616. Then, in the spring of 2021, the filmmakers extended their hot streak when they signed on to direct the Dceu’s Batgirl for HBO Max. And to top it all off, in May of 2022, their Belgian film, Rebel, premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival to strong reviews.

Would-be summer blockbusters have had a bit of a hard time pulling in audiences lately. These movies not only failed to meet expectations but have also started to make cinema observers second guess what the audience and moviegoers crave. Movies like The Fall Guy and Furiosa have had good buzz building before their premieres and both were generally well received by the critics and people who saw it. However, neither made much in the way of money, and even a seemingly sure thing like Garfield didn’t fare much better.
The real test comes with the summer release titles like Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2 or Despicable Me 4. All of them are movie sequels with pre-established fan bases and past successes. However, Bad Boys: Ride or Die is also somewhat of a litmus test. The franchise has been a big money-maker, and it may give an insight into whether...

The Matrix. Risky Business. Memento. Midnight Run. Bound. Four Bad Boys movies. Joe Pantoliano (or Joey Pants – as everyone calls him) is one of the most successful and iconic character actors of our time – and that’s just from his movies! Let’s also not forget that the man played perhaps the most vicious Sopranos character of all time (the dreaded Ralph Cifaretto on twenty-one episodes). Indeed, Joey Pants has had a career like no other. I gotta say, it was truly an honour to chat with the man on Zoom in honour of this return in Bad Boys: For Life, with his character, Captain Conrad Howard, so popular that it looks like Will Smith himself pushed for him to return despite having been killed off in the last movie.

On June 6, 2024, Sony Pictures released “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth film of this action-comedy franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. When their former captain is implicated in corruption, police officers Mike Lowry (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) have to work to clear his name. The movie is directed by Adil & Bilall and written by Chris Bremner and Will Beall.
Critics reviews are mixed on Rotten Tomatoes, with a consensus that reads, “Will Smith and Martin Lawrence remain good company even when ‘Bad Boys’ strains to up the ante, proving there’s still life left in this high-octane franchise.” Perhaps more telling is the audience score of 98%, proving fans still love this funny duo. Joining the action this time around is a supporting cast that includes Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, Eric Dane and plenty of fun cameos. Read our full review round-up below.

We won’t bury the lede. Yes, it goes there.
Will Smith was not quite a full-blown, A-list movie star when mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer cast him in a buddy-cop action movie in 1995. He was still better known as the Fresh Prince than King of the Summer Blockbusters; compared to his costar Martin Lawrence, who was a few years into his run hosting Def Comedy Jam and had been killing it on his own popular sitcom Martin, Smith was arguably the bigger gamble in terms of placing asses in seats. After several weekends of disappointments at the box office, Miami’s finest may be here to turn things around.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die opened to a positive $5.9 million during Thursday night previews at 3,339 locations. The film is expected to open between $45 million and $50 million this weekend, with Sony setting expectations lower at $30 million. The film’s budget sits at $100 million.
Ride or Die is the follow-up to Bad Boys for Life, which earned $6.4 million in Thursday previews on its way to a $62 million opening weekend. Opening in January 2020, it went on to earn $426 million at the global box office before theaters were shut due to the global pandemic.

It might take some “Bad Boys” to save this summer’s bad box office start.
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” has made $5.875 million in Thursday previews at the box office so far.
Sony and Columbia’s fourth “Bad Boys” movie, and the follow-up to 2020’s surprise hit “Bad Boys for Life,” is expected to open between $45 million and $50 million this weekend. However, Sony has a smaller estimate at $30 million. The more conservative projection could be overly cautious due to the growing number of summer films, such as “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “If” and “The Fall Guy,” that have failed to connect with theatergoers.
With the summer box office far behind previous years’ grosses, theater owners are hoping for some relief sooner rather than later — and hopefully “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is their answer. It also marks Smith’s first major film since...

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is a film about retribution and redemption. Not just on screen, but in execution. After their last attempt at a blockbuster was shelved in the name of a tax loophole, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah seem intent on unleashing all their pent-up energy, whether they’re selling us Batgirls or Bad Boys. Even if it bears the baggage of a meta redemption arc for its star, Ride or Die brings enough stylistic gusto to its action in the absence of Michael Bay but has a hard time justifying most other decisions, which adopt the tedium rampant in modern blockbuster filmmaking.
The infusion of Fast & Furious DNA into Bad Boys seemed inevitable by the third entry. Who could blame a long-dormant action franchise for taking its cues from one of the most prevalent (and successful) film series in the intervening 17 years? In the case of Ride or Die,...

The concept of the director cameo is generally regarded as something frivolous. In stark contrast to those filmmakers who are actors (or at least aspire to be) and give themselves major roles in their own films, the director cameo typically involves a silent or otherwise minimal appearance, usually with a comedic element to it.
That's certainly the feeling of director Michael Bay, who enjoys putting himself in his own movies as a wink to both his crew and the audience. Beginning with 1998's "Armageddon," Bay tended to do a cameo either as a gag or as a dare, and wasn't shy about cutting his on-screen work out from his own movie (as he did in 2007's "Transformers"). However, as the story goes, while making 2003's "Bad Boys II" Bay originally hired a day player actor to play the part of a man driving a terrible car that Detectives Mike Lowery...

Keep those hot sauces out your f*ckin’ mouth! Will Smith recently appeared on First We Feast’s interview show Hot Ones to promote this weekend’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die. And while that movie is looking to be one of the best of the series, Will Smith picked a handful of other movies that he considers his best.
After Sean Evans set up The Last Dab Xperience – a hot sauce which has a Scoville level of 2,693,000 – the host challenged Will Smith to name his Mouth Rushmore of movies, to which – in between tears – the guest obliged. “In terms of all around best movies, best performances, if I had to put four of them in a time capsule, it would be Pursuit of Happyness, the first Men in Black, it would be I Am Legend, and probably King Richard.”

The concept of a movie star is a very fragile thing in 2024. Once upon a time, a movie star was something carefully cultivated, their public persona not just controlled but essentially constructed by a studio's PR department. Nowadays, movie stars are still highly desirable to producers and advertisers; the notion of a "name" actor still carries weight. Yet up-and-coming actors are struggling harder than ever to become so-called household names, as one of the biggest issues with media these days is that there's just too damn much of it.
Thus, we have a dearth of capital-m, capital-s Movie Stars right now, and the ones who can still open a movie on the strength of nothing but their name and persona make up a short list. On that list is Will Smith, who successfully transitioned from television to movie screens...

Will Smith thinks that improvements to TV shows have made things harder for the film industry. The 55-year-old star believes that the box office is struggling because the spectacle is now matched on the small screen, making it more challenging to entice audiences to the cinema.Speaking on the latest episode of Hot Ones, Will said: "The definition of a hit is still pretty much the same. Essentially, it's just harder to get one."You used to be able to put some explosions in the trailer and a couple of good jokes and people were there. And television is so good, there are things that people just aren't going to leave their house for. There's definitely a higher demand for a certain type of film for people to leave their homes."Meanwhile, Will also revealed that he regards the 2006 drama 'The Pursuit of Happyness' as the "best movie" of his career.

The summer movie kickoff has been a little bumpy, but the staff at IMDb have their sights set on several highly anticipated movies and shows coming out in June.
See IMDb’s June Picks
If you need something light and fun for the weekend, check out Glen Powell and Adria Arjona in ‘Hit Man’ on Netflix. Based on the true story of part-time undercover investigator Gary Johnson, director Richard Linklater's crime comedy finds Powell moonlighting as a fake hit man who starts to fall for a woman who enlists his services.
Those looking for thrills and chills can head to the theater, where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence go undercover in ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ and Dakota Fanning finds herself trapped with a bunch of strangers under spooky circumstances in the directorial debut of M. Night Shyamalan's daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan.
The rest of June will keep many fans busy with new episodes of three Emmy-winning series: Season 4 of “The Boys” (6/13) on Prime Video, Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” (6/16) on Max, and Season 3 of “The Bear” (6/27) on Hulu.
There’s not a ton on the menu for families, but ‘Inside Out 2’ is expected to be one of 2024’s box office bright spots. The Pixar sequel brings back Riley’s original emotions and adds Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety and Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear’) as Ennui.
Take a look at all the staff picks for the month in our guide, where you can watch trailers, read more about what’s coming, and add movies and shows to your Watchlist....

Buckle up because the Summer movie season kicks into high gear with a brand-new installment of a big loud action franchise. This one goes back 29 years, so it’s a few decades behind the recent Furiosa which is the latest entry of a series that’s now 45 years old. Oddly this weekend’s big release marks only four years since the previous, the shortest turn-around time of the four. Yes, this makes for a quartet centered around a buddy-cop duo that’s well into middle age but still embraces a youthful moniker in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die.
As this adventure begins, detectives Mike Lowery (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are racking up the moving violations as they speed through the sun-baked streets of Miami. What does it mean to be a Bad Boy? That's the unasked question lingering over the "Bad Boys" franchise, but the question as well as the answer isn't as clear cut as it appears. After all, the title could be ironic, especially when Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz were originally slated to star in the first film. By the time the project morphed into Michael Bay's first feature starring then-tv sitcom stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the title became a mission statement, where the film was going to (and eventually did) prove that these funnymen could be genuinely badass.
After "Bad Boys II," 2020's "Bad Boys For Life" appeared to be a swan song for Detectives Mike Lowry (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) as they faced the ravages of age as well as their checkered pasts, eventually...

Almost 20 years later, and Will Smith is still happiest with his performance in “The Pursuit of Happyness.”
The critically acclaimed 2006 film is based on the true story of an unhoused San Francisco-based single father who rises up in the ranks of a tech company, beginning with door-to-door sales. Smith recently said during an episode of First We Feast’s “Hot Ones” series that “The Pursuit of Happyness” is the “best movie” of his career.

Smith later reunited with “The Pursuit of Happyness” director Gabriele Muccino for drama “Seven Pounds.”

The world of Disney has never once disappointed when it comes to musicals. With sprawling tales of epic love stories and star-crossed lovers finding their way to each other, the studio has never once failed to craft a saga that doesn’t bring a tear or two to the eye. Fairy tales like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty gave way to more ambitious adaptations such as Aladdin and Pocahontas.

Now, word through the grapevine suggests that the studio is set on fixing the error of its ways by bringing a new princess into the scene as soon as possible.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is the fourth instalment in the Bad Boys franchise. In terms of sequels, it can be difficult for a movie to continue progressing decades after it entered the cinematic ethos. However, Bad Boys: Ride or Die had another major hurdle to overcome after Will Smith infamously assaulted Chris Rock in 2022. With Smith’s controversy aside, if we take a look at the movie through a cinematic lens, it works on many levels but meanders in others. The film offers nostalgia, recycled material for fandom purposes, and action scenes that have been spliced with a modern...

Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die couldn’t be a more apt title for Will Smith, for whom much is riding on the film doing decent business.
If it works, it could jump-start Smith’s movie career more than two years after he slapped Oscar host Chris Rock on live television, tarnishing a public image he’d spent decades cultivating.
In advance of Bad Boys 4 — in which he plays the sort of fun-loving role people enjoy seeing Smith in — The Hollywood Reporter has learned that his agents at CAA have been calling studio production execs for the first time since the slap. Over the past three or four weeks, they have inquired if studios have projects that are right for Smith, and have even thrown out a suggestion or two, according to multiple sources. The hope is that Smith’s next film can be announced relatively quickly, should Bad Boys 4 work.
